Butterflies As an Indicator Group for the Conservation Value of the Gola Forests in Sierra Leone
BUTTERFLIES AS AN INDICATOR GROUP FOR THE CONSERVATION VALUE OF THE GOLA FORESTS IN SIERRA LEONE Claudio Belcastro* & Torben B. Larsen** * Lungotevere di Pietro Papa 21 00146 Roma, Italia [email protected] ** 358 Coldharbour Lane London SW9 8PL, UK [email protected] EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Less than 5% of Sierra Leone’s original forest cover still exists, though some of that hardly merits the term forest. Besides the remaining forest on the Freetown Peninsula, and the important Loma and Tingi Mountains, with their submontane elements, Gola Forest is the most significant forest in the country. During late April, 2006, a one week field-trip was made to study the butterflies of the Gola Forests by two separate teams, headed by one of the authors of this report. Belcastro also returned to Gola North for three days in early May. In all, 370 species were positively recorded. The estimated total for the area is about 600, accounting for about 80% of the 750 or so known Sierra Leone butterflies. Many rare and interesting butterflies occur and, in general, the Gola Forests are now the westernmost outpost of the West African forest fauna. Many species endemic to Africa west of the Dahomey Gap and to its Liberia subregion were found in Gola. The fact that so many rare and interesting species were collected in, sometimes quite heavily, logged areas of Gola is a strong indicator that the forests have the capacity to return to a state that resembles the original over the next 25 years. In Gola (South), and especially in Gola (North), there appear to be areas of undisturbed forest that act as reservoirs of biodiversity that help to re-populate the regenerating parts of the forest. -

INTR0DUCrION ATLAS OF NEOTROPICAL LEPIDOPTERA INTRODUCTION TO THE CHECKLIST OF EUMAEINI LYCAENLDAE Robert K. Robbins The purpose of this preface is to give the rationale for the taxonomic arrangement of the checklist of Eumaeini, followed by discussions of how the checklist was organized, how decisions were made, and what was learned. I address the discussions successively at the specific, generic, and tribal levels. A concluding author's note explains why some previous taxonomic results were not used. The Atlas of Neotropical Lepidoptera ANL Checklist classification of 1,058 Neotropical eumaeine species partitioned into 83 genera and 15 sections' following the scheme in Eliot, 1973 is the first comprehensive taxonomic arrangement of these butterflies since Draudt 1919-20. A primary reason for this long interval is that most eumaeines are extraordinarily rare in collections. For example, about 20% of the species recognized in this checklist were not represented in major museum collections 25 years ago, and many eumaeine species, including some described two centuries ago, are still known from less than five individuals. A second reason for the long interval has been the lack of a higher classification discussed briefly below. For example, Janthecla Robbins & Yenables was distinguished from the entire Eumaeini because the genera that are closely related to Janthecla were unknown Robbins and Venables, 1991. Although it may be somewhat unorthodox to introduce a new taxonomic arrangement in a checklist, there is no comprehensive alternative classification, and it is my hope that this arrangement will provide the framework necessary to stimulate further research. In Protea, available evidence points to an overwhelming preponderance of bird-pollination systems in the genus, but the scented flowers of several dwarf grassland “sugarbush” species suggest that some Protea species may be adapted for insect pollination. In this study, we used both selective exclusion of vertebrates and complete exclusion of all visitors to investigate whether the insects that visit the scented flowerheads of three Protea species (Protea dracomontana, Protea simplex and Protea welwitschii) in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa contribute to seed production. We also performed supplemental hand pollinations to test for pollen limitation. Seed set was generally higher in inflorescences subjected to vertebrate exclusion than in those from which all visitors were excluded, suggesting that fertile cross-pollen was deposited by insects, but these differences were slight because of high levels of self-fertilization in the study species. Pollen deposition and pollen tube growth were similar for vertebrate- excluded and open-pollinated inflorescences. -

We carried out a multilocus phylogenetic and a biogeographical analysis to test the taxonomy of the genus by several molecular species delimitation methods and reveal patterns shaping the current distribution of Tomares. The phylogenetic analysis based on four molecular markers recovered the monophyly of the genus and recovered two deep-branching lineages: an African clade and an Asian clade. Species delimitation analyses suggested six or ten putative species depending on the method applied. The haplotype network analysis of the Tomares nogelii clade revealed no phylogeographical and taxonomic structure. -

This Study focused on the potential occurrence of Capys penningtoni (Pennington's Protea Butterfly) and Gnomeskelus fluvialis (Riverine Keeled Millipede) along suitable habitat within the Full Supply Level (FSL) of the proposed Smithfield Dam and the deviation of Provincial Road R617 (part of the deviation is located within the so-called "invertebrate corridor"). The scope of work for this Study included the following: A review of the Terrestrial Fauna and Flora Assessment Report undertaken as part of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for the uMWP-1. Confirm the presence of the endangered Capys penningtoni (Pennington’s Protea Butterfly) and the endemic Gnomeskelus fluvialis (Riverine Keeled Millipede). Generate records of findings during fieldwork, including GPS co-ordinates and photographs. Assess the potential impacts of the uMWP-1 on threatened invertebrate species, and suggest suitable mitigation measures. Compile a report documenting the findings (this Report). -

Such an annotated checklist should hopefully be useful for future research into the butterflies of Bangladesh, which are very poorly known, for reasons discussed below. When my wife was posted to Bangladesh in March 2001 we had expected to stay for four years, but she was transferred to Hanoi in March 2003. I had hoped to develop a book on the butterflies of Bangladesh, but now this checklist appears the best compromise in order not to lose the information that I did manage to gather. The checklist is clearly incomplete but it must be the most detailed inventory of any large invertebrate group in the country, and it updates the taxonomy and nomenclature which in some Indian and local publications still largely revolve around that in the excellent book by Evans (1932), which is now very dated. Objectives The objectives of the study are: • To list of all butterflies known to occur in Bangladesh. • To add to this list adding those species that on ecological and biogeographical grounds must be – or at least have been – in Bangladesh. • To update the taxonomy and nomenclature of the Bangladesh butterflies, including the authorship, date, and type locality for all species and subspecies. -
