  • Dark Webs Goth Subcultures in Cyberspace
Dark Webs Goth Subcultures in Cyberspace Jason Whittaker University College Falmouth The rapport between Goth subcultures and new technologies has often been a subject of fascination for those who are both part of that subculture and external observers. William Gibson, who provided much of the impetus for such intersec- tions via his contributions to cyberpunk, made the connection between technol- ogy and Gothic rather embarrassingly explicit in his 1986 novel, Count Zero. Less mortifying was the crossover that occurred in the late eighties and nineties between Goth and Industrial music, particularly via bands such as Nine Inch Nails or Frontline Assembly, exploiting a hardcore techno sound combined with a strongly Goth-influenced aesthetic.1 This connection between the Gothic and technoculture has contributed to the survival of a social grouping that Nick Mercer, in 21st Century Goth (2002), refers to as the most vibrant community online, and is also the subject of several studies by Paul Hodkinson in particular. This paper is not especially concerned with the Gothic per se, whether it can tell us something about the intrinsic nature of the web or vice versa, but more with the practice of a youth subculture that does indeed appear to be flourishing in cyberspace, particularly the phe- nomenon of net.Goths that has emerged in recent years. Claims that sites and newsgroups form virtual communities are, of course, not specific to Goths. With the emergence of the Internet into popular consciousness in the early to mid- nineteen-nineties following the invention of the World Wide Web, commenta- tors such as Howard Rheingold in The Virtual Community (1995) made grand claims for the potential of online or virtual communities.

  • Tourism Australia Update
Having trouble reading? version 29 July 2020 TOURISM AUSTRALIA UPDATE The tourism industry has had another tough week with interstate travel restrictions tightening and ongoing uncertainty around when the industry will see some return to normality. As frustrating as this is, we are also getting encouraging feedback about significant levels of pent up demand for domestic holidays – and a desire to have different types of holidays. So, while we continue to face some challenges, we can be confident, that when people are able to travel freely again, they will. Tourism Australia is continuing to develop its domestic campaign plans, more details of which we will be sharing this Friday 31 July at 11am in our next webinar. The webinar will include a consumer insights update from our Executive General Manager of Strategy & Research, Rob Dougan, and a marketing update from our Chief Marketing Officer, Susan Coghill. We will also be joined by Australia’s Tourism Minister, Simon Birmingham, who will give an update on Australia’s ongoing response to coronavirus. Register here. Also a reminder that over the past few weeks, Tourism Australia’s international teams have hosted a series of virtual market specific updates and you can watch recordings here.

1997 SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL The 1997 Sundance Film Festival continued to attract crowds, international attention and an appreciative group of alumni fi lmmakers. Many of the Premiere fi lmmakers were returning directors (Errol Morris, Tom DiCillo, Victor Nunez, Gregg Araki, Kevin Smith), whose earlier, sometimes unknown, work had received a warm reception at Sundance. The Piper-Heidsieck tribute to independent vision went to actor/director Tim Robbins, and a major retrospective of the works of German New-Wave giant Rainer Werner Fassbinder was staged, with many of his original actors fl own in for forums. First up is the reissue of the Rolling Stones album Get Yer Ya-Ya’s Out!. What many consider the best live rock concert album of all time is now available from Abcko in a four-disc box set. Along with the original album there is a disc of five previously unreleased live performances and a DVD of those performances. There is a also a bonus CD of five live tracks from B.B. King and seven from Ike & Tina Turner, who were the opening acts on the tour. There is also a beautiful hardcover book with an essay by Russell, his photographs, fans’ notes and expanded liner notes, along with a lobby card-sized reproduction of the tour poster. Russell’s new book, Let It Bleed (Springboard), is now finally out and it’s a stunning visual look back on the infamous tour and the watershed Altamont concert. Russell doesn’t just provide his historic photos (which would be sufficient), but, like in his previous Dear Mr. Fantasy book, he serves as an insightful eyewitness of the greatest rock tour in history and rock music’s 60’s live Waterloo.

The unique social, political, and economic conditions of West Berlin during the 1980s created a distinct urban environment that is reflected in the band’s music. The city has been preserved by Einstürzende Neubauten in the form of sound recordings, and conserved in the unique instruments originally found by the band on the streets of West Berlin.
