The pavement leaps up to meet the Cainite’s gaze, then becomes a blur of near and far, street and sky, until a bit of trash brings the panorama to a halt. From a distance, he hears his body spasm and fall. A flash. A sizzle behind him. The smell of cooking meat. Across the street, he feels a hot blade dice him into quarters. One final sizzle as the heart dies. Five hundred years die with it. Chapter One: The Wheel Turns It’s the world you know: neon shining in puddles, tired-eyed people waiting in laundromats, smog and bad paychecks, student loans that teach you more about Sisyphus than any of the world mythology classes they paid for, apartment buildings huddling in the shadow of the glass- and-steel towers of the mighty. But it’s also not the world you know. Look in the shadows: There’s a vampire looking through the laundromat window, sizing up the potential meals inside. Across the skin of the world, ferocious warrior-wolves throw themselves howling into battle against the corrosive spirit of the smog. In a well-appointed office you can’t find with mundane directions, a magician spins numbers into power, converting your loans into binding chains of control you can never, ever escape. The last faeries huddle and dream in the apartment building, while ghosts and demons drink in the sins of the skyscraper. This is the World of Darkness, a dark reflection of the modern age where monsters and magic hide away in the shadows. But it wasn’t always like this. The Age of Legends The night people tell a hundred stories to explain where they came from, and how the world used to be. The vampires and demons speak of curses hurled by a wrathful God. The werewolves sing of a better age when the elements of the Triat were in harmony. The mages whisper of the paths of the Wyck burning reality into definition out of primal chaos. The last of faerie-kind speak of a world that dreamed itself into being, and an age of heroes and nightmares and great wars that shook the cosmos.

  • Powered by the Dark Kindred of the East
Powered by the Dark Kindred of the East This is a PbtA hack for Kindred of the East. Read Apocalypse World or Monsterhearts for the fundamentals of *World games, particularly the philosophy of how to run them. Short version: be a fan of the PCs, fuck with them relentlessly to keep the story hopping, don’t sweat the piddly shit, treat NPCs like stolen cars (you can have fun with them but you can’t keep ‘em), who really gives all that much of a shit about combat turn order, and when PCs miss a roll, either fuck them with harm or a Condition or give someone an Edge for seeing them screw up, or do something to kick the story into a higher gear. There are more details in Storyteller’s section, below. This isn’t a stand-alone product. You need the Kindred of the East hardback to use this, because it doesn’t reproduce any setting information or details on what half of the game’s various terms mean. Language note: The Hungry Dead This document chooses to omit the term “Kuei-jin” as a well-meaning but nonetheless racist kludge dating back to the 1990s. It’s a nonsense-word which I’ve never seen do anything but make speakers of the languages involved visibly cringe. Instead I’ve chosen to default to describing the vampires of Asia as the Hungry Dead, with alternative uses encompassing Gui Ren, Wan Kuei, or simply as “vampires.” Where the familiar Western vampires of Vampire: the Masquerade are discussed, they’re described as Kindred.

Vampire: the Middle Kingdom The Kindred of the East New World of Darkness Systems Conversion Written by Steven Markley (aka I Hate All Life/Predaphile) E-mail: [email protected] Kindred of the East Resources: http://www.geocities.com/predaphile/wod-kote-index.html What This Is This is a conversion of Kindred of the East to the “new” World of Darkness mechanics. Kindred of the East was, and still is, a great game, but one hampered by clunky rules and a poorly organized book. Hopefully this version redresses the mechanical issues while preserving the soul of that wonderful game. Vampire: the Middle Kingdom is largely lacking in background and flavor text, and there's no artwork. (But at least there's a character sheet!) This is pretty much all crunch; you can get the story elements and descriptions from the Kindred of the East "core," and you'll need that plus the World of Darkness to use these rules. Even so, it's not the simple little rules patch I thought it was going to be, as bare-bones and no frills as it is. Some things I've had to straight-up rewrite or revise. I attempted to translate the original as closely as possible, but some things have been judgment calls – like clarifying, expanding and/or restricting certain Discipline arts, revising guanxi, and greatly reducing the utterly ridiculous amount of aggravated damage in the setting. Still, the basics remain intact, and you'll have no problem recognizing Kindred of the East in its new format. What This Ain't Before I start getting e-mails about how “imbalanced” all this is, I'm not converting Kuei-jin to be used in the new World of Darkness setting, nor is this a re-envisioning of Asian vampires.

It offers a good view of a new type of supernatural to add to the World of Darkness (but, carefully.) I like the openness of the players moral decisions; they're much closer to Sabbat Paths than Humanity, yet they're not evil- they just have a different world view than the Western Kindred are used to. The book does a good job describing it and setting the feel for it. Contrary to the other reviews, I find the Eastern and Western Kindred to be fairly balanced power-wise. If you're interested in extending your World of Darkness setting into the East, this book is a must. I thought that KoE was one of the best books that I have read from White Wolf. It takes and enforces the original intention of Vampire: the Masquerade, the struggle between keeping your Humanity and succumbing to your Beast.

She was nervous. She had met her maternal cousins before, but not often and never in a large group like tonight’s. She lifted a fingernail to her mouth and then lowered it. They had all been filed, manicured, sculpted and lacquered expertly – not by some beauty salon worker but by her great aunt Isabel. (At least, “great aunt” was what Kay called her. She assumed Isabel had, like her mother, been born with the Milliner name and taken her husband’s name.) Isabel was different from the rest of Kay’s family: She was exotic and graceful and had a glamorous aloofness that Kay associated with the East Coast, and with Europe, and with other places far from her home in Georgia. It was impossible to imagine Isabel blushing, or ending up picked last for volleyball, or going to the bathroom. She had the un- changing perfection of a statue, and Kay was eager to see her again. Kay also wanted to see her cousin Stewart Milliner, but she wouldn’t tell anyone about that. Isabel had said she would meet Kay at the party. That made Kay less nervous. Also, Isabel had brought her a beautiful red velvet dress for her birthday, but wearing the dress made Kay both more and less nervous at the same time.

Page 1 of 35 Introduction: So you want to play Kuei-jin! Kuei-jin is a problematic genre. To put it plainly, it was written in the 1990s by white guys from the US. The primary inspirations were 80s movies about the yellow menace, Japanese Anime, Hong Kong Action films, and campy mainland Wuxia dramas. It’s apparent in the way some of the dharmic philosophies are described, which can read more like a fortune cookie than something descended from the philosophies of Southeast or East Asia. It’s apparent in the outsized focus on China and Japan, with sporadic mention of Korea, and almost total neglect of Southeast Asia. Even the name is odd – Kuei/Gui comes from the Chinese word for ghost, -jin comes from the Japanese word for person, so the name of the group comes across a bit like Los Monster Hermanos, or Les Hommes de Blut. Now, it’s 2017, and with the much wider reach of the internet we have a lot more information available than when this game was written, and frankly it can be a very fun game, so long as you’re careful to be respectful of the real people and cultures you are representing.
