Reviewed by Tobias Brinkmann (Simon Dubnow Institute) Published on H-Antisemitism (July, 2003) In modern Jewish history, "pogroms" are associated in particular with Russia. In 1881, 1903, 1906, and 1918/19 some of the worst atrocities against Jews before the Holocaust were committed in Russia and the Ukraine. "Pogrom" is, after all, a Russian word meaning "devastation." For the period before 1933, such brutal violence directed against Jews is not associated with Germany. The German states emancipated their Jewish populations, albeit in a long and uneven process. The anti-Jewish riots of 1819 and 1848 were, according to most scholars, the last vestiges of the collapsing feudal order. In the late 1870s, modern antisemitism developed as a response to the full emancipation granted to Jews in Germany. A radical ideology, it was not of necessity connected with violent acts. While pervasive in many social spheres, such as the Prussian military, its political influence was limited. Admittedly, there were a few isolated incidents of antisemitic violence directed against Jews, but these occurred in backward rural regions in the Prussian East and the state authorities quickly intervened. During the First World War antisemitism as an ideology entered a much more radical phase. -

JBL123/2 (2004) 219-234 PLOTTING ANTIOCHUS'S PERSECUTION STEVEN WEITZMAN [email protected] Indiana University, Bloomington, IN 47405-7005 The history of religious persecution could be said to have begun in 167 B.C.E. when the Seleucid king Antiochus IV issued a series of decrees outlawing Jewish religious practice. According to 1 Maccabees, anyone found with a copy of the Torah or adhering to its laws—observing the Sabbath, for instance, or practicing circumcision—was put to death. Jews were compelled to build altars and shrines to idols and to sacrifice pigs and other unclean animals. The temple itself was desecrated by a "desolating abomination" built atop the altar of burnt offering. The alternative account in 2 Maccabees adds to the list of outrages: the temple was renamed for Olympian Zeus, and the Jews were made to walk in a procession honoring the god Dionysus. Without apparent precedent, the king decided to abolish an entire religion, suppressing its rites, flaunting its taboos, forcing the Jews to follow "customs strange to the land." Antiochus IV s persecution of Jewish religious tradition is a notorious puz zle, which the great scholar of the period Elias Bickerman once described as "the basic and sole enigma in the history of Seleucid Jerusalem."1 Earlier for eign rulers of the Jews in Jerusalem, including Antiochus s own Seleucid fore bears, were not merely tolerant of the religious traditions of their subjects; they often invested their own resources to promote those traditions.2 According to Josephus, Antiochus III, whose defeat of the Ptolemaic kingdom at the battle of Panium in 200 B.C.E. -

The Ambivalent Relationship Between Jews and Christians in Early Modern Germany and Pennsylvania
Competition and Cooperation: The Ambivalent Relationship between Jews and Christians in Early Modern Germany and Pennsylvania N 1786 AARON LEVY, a Jewish immigrant from the Netherlands, laid out a town with wide streets and a town square in present-day Centre County, Pennsylvania. Levy had settled in the frontier town of Northumberland on the east bank of the Susquehanna River in the early 1770s, where he had set up a store and started speculating in frontier lands. After the Revolution, he acted as a land agent for wealthy Philadelphians such as Robert Morris and James Wilson, on whose behalf he acquired hundreds of thousands of acres. When Levy founded the town of Aaronsburg near Pennsylvania's geographical center, he hoped that it would become a future county seat, if not the eventual state capital. Vhile these hopes were never realized, Aaron Levy is remembered for an extraordinary incident of benevolence toward his German-speaking Christian neighbors. Levy gave land in his new town to the Lutheran and Reformed settlers for a token sum and presented them with the gift of a pewter communion set. This gift provided the historical background for the staging of the "Aaronsburg Story" in October 1949-a public meeting and historical pageant, attended by thousands of people, celebrating Aaronsburg's heritage of tolerance.1 One might argue that this act of benevolence between a Jew and his Christian neighbors could have occurred only under the special circum- stances of religious freedom and social fluidity that existed on Pennsylvania's ' On Aaron Levy, see Sidney M. Yet, historical sources, like contracts, let- ters, and book lists of Jewish libraries, to mention just a few, reveal a great variety of terms related to the material and visual aspects of the books, such as volumes, quires, scripts, bindings, etc. In this workshop, we would like to focus on the Hebrew and non- Hebrew terms used to describe Jewish manuscripts and printed books during the medi- eval and early modern periods. The inquiry into the terminology and the language of book descriptions will help us to better understand the actual artefacts to which the terms refer and will shed light on the ways in which Jewish books were perceived and treated as material objects. The main goal of the workshop is to provide a platform for scholars to exchange ideas and problems related to the historical terminology of Jewish books, which hitherto has been not systematically investigated.
