Popular Locos, Some Flaws Updated 1/18/2005
1 Popular Locos, Some Flaws updated 1/18/2005 As a result of numerous installations performed at Tony’s Train Exchange, here are some of our observations concerning some BACHMANN popular locos. By and large, all the following locos, except as noted, Bachmann Spectrum Mountain 4-8-2 represent good investments. Bilevel Rail Car - Wikipedia
Bilevel rail car - Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bilevel_rail_car Bilevel rail car The bilevel car (American English) or double-decker train (British English and Canadian English) is a type of rail car that has two levels of passenger accommodation, as opposed to one, increasing passenger capacity (in example cases of up to 57% per car).[1] In some countries such vehicles are commonly referred to as dostos, derived from the German Doppelstockwagen. The use of double-decker carriages, where feasible, can resolve capacity problems on a railway, avoiding other options which have an associated infrastructure cost such as longer trains (which require longer station Double-deck rail car operated by Agence métropolitaine de transport platforms), more trains per hour (which the signalling or safety in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The requirements may not allow) or adding extra tracks besides the existing Lucien-L'Allier station is in the back line. ground. Bilevel trains are claimed to be more energy efficient,[2] and may have a lower operating cost per passenger.[3] A bilevel car may carry about twice as many as a normal car, without requiring double the weight to pull or material to build. However, a bilevel train may take longer to exchange passengers at each station, since more people will enter and exit from each car. The increased dwell time makes them most popular on long-distance routes which make fewer stops (and may be popular with passengers for offering a better view).[1] Bilevel cars may not be usable in countries or older railway systems with Bombardier double-deck rail cars in low loading gauges. -
Union Depot Tower Interlocking Plant
Union Depot Tower Union Depot Tower (U.D. Tower) was completed in 1914 as part of a municipal project to improve rail transportation through Joliet, which included track elevation of all four railroad lines that went through downtown Joliet and the construction of a new passenger station to consolidate the four existing passenger stations into one. A result of this overall project was the above-grade intersection of 4 north-south lines with 4 east-west lines. The crossing of these rail lines required sixteen track diamonds. A diamond is a fixed intersection between two tracks. The purpose of UD Tower was to ensure and coordinate the safe and timely movement of trains through this critical intersection of east-west and north-south rail travel. UD Tower housed the mechanisms for controlling the various rail switches at the intersection, also known as an interlocking plant. Interlocking Plant Interlocking plants consisted of the signaling appliances and tracks at the intersections of major rail lines that required a method of control to prevent collisions and provide for the efficient movement of trains. Most interlocking plants had elevated structures that housed mechanisms for controlling the various rail switches at the intersection. Union Depot Tower is such an elevated structure. Tower was owned and operated by the four rail companies with lines that came through downtown Joliet. -

The Long Island Railroad Milk Car Mystery SOLVED WALTER WOHLEKING
The Long Island Railroad Milk Car Mystery SOLVED WALTER WOHLEKING Standard Steel Car Co. builder’s photo from the D. K. Retterer Collection TWO YEARS AGO, the Summer, 2007 issue of the Cannon Ball displayed this picture beneath the heading, “Know anything about this oddball?” A lot has been discovered since then, and the way in which the information was gained is a lesson in railroad research that might encourage others to learn about their favorite cars. Since the author of this article also placed the picture, its heading and its caption in that 2007 Cannon Ball, thus stirring the pot, it’s only appropriate that he be responsible for getting to the bottom of things. The story of how that came about and the contributions generously made by members of the model railroading community provides a lesson in railroad research. The knowledge gained allows a pretty good picture to be painted of the car’s origin, character- istics, length of service, and other useful things. Happily, there is a solid means of creating a very accurate model of the prototype. Here, then, is the story. The original caption under the photo referred to car #3000 as a “mystery milk car” and read, “Long Island Railroad milk car no. 3000 appears to be a reefer with the distinctive fishbelly underframe found on many cars built in the first decade of the 20th cen- tury. But is it a reefer assigned to milk service, or does it have some of the special characteristics associated with cars designed par- ticularly for milk service? ...Email or write the editor, if you have any information...” While that caption was constructive, in that it solicited information that generated responses, at least some of it might have been confusing. -

Alco PA with Prime Mover 244
True Sound Project for Zimo Sounds designed by Heinz Daeppen US Diesel Seite 1 Version 200612 Alco PA with prime mover 244 Foto Wikipedia The Prototype The ALCO PA was a family of A1A-A1A diesel locomotives built to haul passenger trains. The locomotives were built in Schenectady, New York, in the United States by a partnership of the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) and General Electric (GE) between June 1946 and December 1953. Designed by General Electric's Ray Patten (along with their ALCO FA cousins), they were of a cab unit design; both cab-equipped lead A unit PA and cabless booster B unit PB models were built. While externally the PB models were slightly shorter than the PA model, they shared many of the same characteristics, both aesthetically and mechanically. However, they were not as reliable as EMD F-units. ALCO's designation of P indicates that they were geared for higher speeds and passenger use, whereas the F designation marks these locomotives as being geared primarily for freight use. However, beyond this their design was largely similar - aside from the PA/PB's both being larger A1A-A1A types with an even more striking nose - and many railroads used PA and FA locomotives for both freight and passenger service. Wikipedia True Sounds made in Switzerland True Sound Project for Zimo Sounds designed by Heinz Daeppen US Diesel Seite 2 Version 200612 Sound Project Information The sound project is made with genuine sound recordings of a prototype. F14 reduces the diesel motor sound to idling while maintaining the same speed. -
