The Nolans anthem, I’m in the Mood for Dancing instantly became a mega-hit in 1979 – and they have never tired of sing- ing it since. But was Anne aware of the Line dances – including, In the Mood and In the Mood for Dancing – which have been chore- ographed to it, not to mention, Sexy Cha Cha and Yuangi Cha Cha to the Japan-only release – Sexy Music? She laughed out loud, a warm throaty chuckle. “I was actually. Because I go line dancing myself”.
“I go to a class in Blackpool, where I live,” she explained. “It’s run by Jean and with lots of local people. I’ve been going for about a year now. I absolutely LOVE it. Especially if the surf’s up and you’re lucky to catch a refresh- ing wave or two with N the most easy-going, enigmatic, yet exhilarat- ing young singer/songwriter to emerge in a long time. Making magical music is simply a stroll in the sea breeze for this carefree Texas-born, Raleigh-based 27-year-old.
Hailed as the new Emmylou Harris, the accolades have poured in since the release of Tift Merritt’s debut album, Bramble Rose. The rave reviews which accompanied her inaugural tour were extraordinary. Her voice has been de- scribed as one that “quivers and trills and lilts and sweeps”. It does all that, and so much more.
Her new album, Tambourine, proves she is not content to sit back on her sneakers basking in the glory of Bramble Rose. Instead she has deftly served up a dish of discriminating, yummy difference. A juicy, spicy, joy- ous mixture of Country, blues, soul and sexy, rootsy rock ‘n’ roll.
I caught up with Tift for a quick chat as she was preparing to hit the road again with her band to promote the new record. “I’ve always wanted to be a writer,” she says. ‘I try to get across how much I “I didn’t always want to be a singer. I was a real musician. I didn’t think that I was a natural singer. Had to work at that. I don’t love the music and how I think know why that was. I always knew that I had something to say. So really it’s my writing that led me to performing, because I just about making music’ love to do it.
“Writing songs it has to be something that you need to do. And you want to show it – like something that you say to someone when you love them. It’s searching for and fi nding the essence of something that you feel. The reality of the song. Something that’s heartfelt.
“I’ve been singing so long I really can’t say where it comes from. It’s something that I haven’t really thought about. But as long as you’re with the music, you’re alright what- ever you do.”
Tift would like to settle down and have a family of her own one day.
“I would love it,” she says.” I guess I would very much like that. But I don’t know if I could settle down to city life. I’m not sure if I could settle down there! I certainly love the coast. But it’s a big world. Who knows?”
Looks like the world is just about to unfold for the girl who likes nothing better than to wander along the beach walking her dog, eat- ing ice cream or surfi ng or even roller skating backwards – badly. But when it comes to her special blend of R ‘n B, rootsy Country and rock ‘n’ roll music though, she is discovering how it feels to be fl ying – brilliantly – for- wards. 30
