For that reason, the needs of our research are based on a fundamental consideration of this phenomenon in the works of representative writers, whose works represent a revolutionary step in terms of the prevailing literary paradigms. In order for every work to find its place within modern scientific theory, it is necessary to emphasise the significance of the action of a literary text and its repercussions in the empirical world of the readers. We will examine the way in which certain writers influence other ones, find analogies between different texts, the attitude writers have towards literary heritage and the dialogue with works from modern literature of a fantasy orientation. Relying on relevant critical texts, our goal is to present a corpus of fantasy texts and of collections of short stories by selected authors, to highlight how they are related with concurrent literary phenomena and neighbouring countries. One of the goals, which arose during the research process, is a review of fantasy in world literature of the 20th century, whose authors exerted an influence on a generation of writers from Yugoslavia. The research covers authors of fantasy literature who were writing in the period 1945–1990 (Pavao Pavličić, Goran Tribuson, Milorad Pavić, Sava Damjanov, Miodrag Bulatović, Vlada Urošević and Irfan Horozović), and who were active within literary production in Croatia, Serbia, Montenegro, Macedonia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. On the basis of the stated assertion, we come to the conclusion that fantasy writers in the area of the former Yugoslavia played an important role as a phenomenon of literary history, opening up the way for postmodernist trends, and for this reason their fantasy short prose is considered a forerunner of postmodernist literary concepts. 60 ZuZana Poláčková; Pieter van Duin Montenegro Old and New: History, Politics, Culture, and the People The authors are focusing on how Montenegro today is coming to terms with the task of becoming a modern European nation, which implies recognition not only of democracy, the rule of law, and so forth, but also of a degree of ‘multiculturalism’, that is recognition of the existence of cultural, ethnic, linguistic and religious minorities in a society that is dominated by a Slavic Orthodox majority. In his context they are analyzing the history of the struggle of the Montenegrin people against a host of foreign invaders – after they had ceased to be invaders themselves – and especially their apparently consistent refusal to accept Ottoman sovereignty over their homeland seemed to make them the most remarkable freedom fighters imaginable and led to the creation of a special Montenegrin image in Europe. This im- age of heroic stubbornness and unique martial bravery was even consciously cultivated in Western and Central Europe from the early nineteenth century onwards, as the Greeks, the Serbs, the Montenegrins and other Balkan peoples began to resist the Ottoman Empire in a more effective way and the force of Romantic nationalism began to influence the whole of Europe, from German historians to British politi- cians, and also including Montenegrin and Serbian poets themselves. And what about the present situa- tion? The authors of this essay carried out an improvised piece of investigation into current conditions, attitudes, and feelings on both the Albanian and the Slavic-Montenegrin side (in September 2012). key words: Montenegro; history; multiculturalism; identity; nationalism; Muslim; Orthodox Montenegro (Crna Gora, Tsrna Gora, Tsernagora) is a small country in the Western Balkans region with some 625,000 inhabitants,1 which became an independent nation in 2006 and a can- didate-member of the EU in 2010.

The Memory of the Avant- Garde and the New Wave in the Contemporary Serbian Novel Marko Avramović Institute for Literature and Arts, 2 Kralja Milana St, 11000 Belgrade, Serbia https://orcid.org/0000-0001-5878-5777 [email protected] This article is dealing with the topic of two past twentieth-century epochs in a few representative Serbian novels at the turn from the twentieth to the twenty-first century. These are the 1980s and the New Wave era in Yugoslavia, an epoch close to the past that can still be written about from the perspective of an immediate witness, and the avant-garde era, that is, the period between the two world wars marked in art by different movements of the historical avant-garde. The novels Milenijum u Beogradu (Millennium in Belgrade, 2000) by Vladimir Pištalo, Vrt u Veneciji (The Garden in Venice, 2002) by Mileta Prodanović, and Kiša i hartija (Rain and Paper, 2004) by Vladimir Tasić are being interpreted. In these novels, it is particularly noteworthy that the two aforementioned epochs are most commonly linked as part of the same creative and intellectual currents in the twentieth century. Keywords: Serbian literature / contemporary Serbian novel / literary avant-garde / New Wave / Zenitism / rock and roll / Pištalo, Vladimir / Prodanović, Mileta / Tasić, Vladimir In Vladimir Tasić’s Farewell Gift (2001), one of the key contemporary Serbian novels, the narrator at some points expresses a high apprecia- tion of the two epochs. One is personally experienced, while the other has long been placed in historical niches

The Yugoslav language policy advocated a polycentric model of linguistic unity that strived for equal representation of the languages of the peoples (Serbo-Croatian, Macedonian and Slovenian), ethnicities (ethnic minorities) and ethnic groups, as well as both scripts (Latin and Cyrillic). Serbo-Croatian, spoken by 73% of people in Yugoslavia, was divided into the eastern and the western variety and two standard language expressions: Bosnian and Montenegrin. One linguistic system had sociolinguistic subsystems or varieties which functioned and developed in different socio-political, historical, religious and other circumstances. With the disintegration of Yugoslavia, the aforementioned sociolinguistic subsystems became standard languages (one linguistic system brought forth four political languages). We will describe the linguistic circumstances of the newly formed countries after 1991 in Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro.

  • Ћирилица Из Нот Дед: Cyrillic Script from a Sociolinguistic Perspective in Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia
1 Ћирилица из нот дед: Cyrillic Script from a Sociolinguistic Perspective in Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia Aleksandra Salamurović (Jena)1 1. Introduction During 2012 and 2013 the question of script use in Serbia, specifically, the fact that Latin script prevails in public use, moved into the spotlight of public discussion, especially in multicultural Novi Sad (Salamurović 2015). After several months-long debates over scripts used on the building of the Center for Culture in Novi Sad, on bus displays and other public facilities, one creative citizen was obviously motivated to express their revolt by posting the following graffiti: Ћирилица из нот дед (“Cyrillics is not dead”), transcribing parts of English text into Serbian using the Cyrillic alphabet. On the other hand, in his current typological study on biscriptality in Slavic and non-Slavic languages, Slavist Daniel Bunčić proclaims in aphoristic form: “Monoscriptality can be cured - learn Cyrillic!” (Bunčić 2016a:16)2 emphasizing an additional value of learning and using the Cyrillic script. Besides both statements relating to Cyrillic script, they also have the common trait that they assign particular attitudes and values to the script. Those socio-cultural attributions are one of the most important features of the script and are of primary importance in selecting the script within biscriptal situations. Moreover, they are of particular interest for language policy and sociolinguistics of script. This paper will examine the current status of Cyrillic script in three South-Slavic countries: Serbia, Montenegro and Macedonia3, the first two being biscriptal in the sense of what Bunčić typologically describes as bigraphism (one language using two scripts, Bunčić 2016c:54), and the last, Macedonia, being typologically monoscriptal but still dealing with two different scripts.

Year III, Vol. 4 Scientific polemics pp. 121-141 Momčilo Subotić1 Institute for Political Studies, Belgrade The Renewal of Serbistics Introduction It is known, from the researches conducted by many public opinion agencies, that most Serbs and other citizens of Serbia are inclined to- wards Serbia’s accession to the European Union. However, things have gone a step backwards today compared to the nineties; no one in the Serbian politics, or in the key national institutions, such as the SANU (Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts), Matica srpska and others, is even trying to conduct the analyses of Serbian defeats, to face the wrong ideas of Yugoslavism and Yugoslav politics and state. Without scientifically based and critical analyses of the status of Serbian nation and its state’s state constituencies, no further European integrations are possible. In other words, until the time when the Serbian political and intellectual leadership is finished with the Yugoslav era of its history, and realize and correct all the historical forgeries and counterfeits it was based on, the European integrations on an equal basis and by Eu- ropean standards will not happen. It is likely that the Serbian leader- ship, for the umpteenth time in the recent history, cannot overcome the excess history which, in the Balkan’s „barrel of gun-powder“ has always been too much. The Serbs have to answer the question of what happened to the Ser- bian national identity in the Yugoslav state to themselves first; do the European standards for entering „the family“ of the European nations, based on the linguistic definition of a nation, also stand for the Serbian people, being multi-confessional such as some other European nations (Germans, Hungarians, Аlbanians etc.).

The beginning of that struggle is connected to the year 1814, when, in the royal city of Vienna, Vuk’s first grammar book came out: The Orthography of the Serbian Lan- guage Based on the Speech of the Common Folk, which dealt with resolving the three most important standard-related issues: a) the issue of the Serbian orthography, b) the issue of the morpho- logical structure of the Serbian language, and c) the issue of the name of the language and its national boundaries. Rare are the languages, if, indeed, there are any, which have had such a turbulent history of two hundred years. The histor- ical development of a language can be followed at two histor- ical levels: that of its internal and that of its external history.

  • The Media in Dark Times a View of the Media in Serbia Filip David It Is
The Media in Dark Times A View of the Media in Serbia Filip David It is the opinion of many that the disintegration of Yugoslavia and the present bloody war would not have been possible without the propaganda role of the state media, particularly radio and television. A monopoly of information already existed in its fullest form in Tito's Yugoslavia. Then too there were 'black lists' of banned personalities and an index of prohibited subjects. No criticism was allowed of Tito himself or his actions, the Yugoslav national army, the communist system, self-management or brotherly unity. It is true that in some of its features, Yugoslav communism was more liberal than that of Eastern Europe or the Soviet Union and that there was an occasional relaxation of censorship and party control, but there was never a moment when the media was free to act without ideological pressure. Having lost its ideological basis after the collapse of the Great Eastern Empire of communism, the ruling oligarchy took on nationalism as its new ideology. In Serbia, this conversion took place through what was known as 'the anti-bureaucratic revolution', which represented an introduction to the disintegration of Yugoslavia, but about the same time prefaced a gory venture into war. All the worst features of the old regime were passed on: demagogy, manipulation of people and ideas, the use of force against the truth, an Orwellian twisting of the meaning of words. People spoke of peace when they meant war, cited justice while setting up a system of gross injustice. Truth became another name for lies and life was praised by glorifying death.
