DOC NYC ANNOUNCES FINAL TITLES INCLUDING WORLD PREMIERE OF BRUCE SPRINGSTREEN & THE E STREET BAND’S “DARKNESS ON THE EDGE OF TOWN” CONCERT FILM AT ZIEGFELD THEATER ON NOVEMBER 4TH AND “MOMENTS OF TRUTH” FEATURING ALEC BALDWIN AND OTHER FAMOUS FIGURES DISCUSSING THEIR FAVORITE DOC MOMENTS New York, NY, October 19th 2010 - DOC NYC, New York’s Documentary Festival, announced its final slate of titles including the world premiere of “Darkness on the Edge of Town,” a new concert film with Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band performing their classic album. The film will screen at the Ziegfeld Theatre on November 4. Directed by the Grammy and Emmy award winner Thom Zimny, the film was shot last year at the Paramount Theatre in Asbury Park, NJ in an unconventional manner without any audience in attendance. Springsteen’s manager Jon Landau has said this presentation “best captures the starkness of the original album.” The film will be released on DVD as part of the box set “The Promise: The Darkness on the Edge of Town Story” later in November. “We wanted to give fans a one night only opportunity to see this spectacular performance on the Ziegfeld’s big screen,” said DOC NYC Artistic Director Thom Powers. A portion of the proceeds from this screening will be donated to the Danny Fund/Melanoma Research Alliance – a non-profit foundation devoted to advancing melanoma research and awareness set up after the 2008 passing of Danny Federici, longtime Springsteen friend and E-Street Band member. DOC NYC will help launch a new promo campaign of shorts called “Moments of Truth,” in which noteworthy figures (actors, politicians, musicians, etc) describe particular documentary moments that moved them. -

The Rutles: All You Need Is Cash
SPOOFS The Rutles: All You Need Is Cash In the 1970s, Eric Idle, a former member of the legendary British com- edy team Monty Python, featured a Beatles parody song called “It Must Be Love” on Rutland Weekend Television, his own television show on BBC-2. The song had been written by Neil Innes, who had previously worked with Monty Python and the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band. The song was performed by ‘The Rutles’, a Beatles look-alike band featuring Neil Innes as the John Lennon character, and Eric Idle as the Paul McCartney character (vgl. Harry 1985: 69). In October 1976, the parody was shown on America’s NBC TV’s show Saturday Night Live as a se- quel to the running gag of a Beatles reunion for $3,000. The parody went down so well that Eric Idle and Neil Innes decided to produce a feature program about The Rutles for television. Idle, who was a close friend of George Harrison, was allowed to watch Neil Aspinall’s unreleased do- cumentary about The Beatles, called The Long and Winding Road. Aspi- nall’s film featured a bulk of famous footage of The Beatles, from their first televised performance at the Cavern Club in Liverpool to their last group performance on the roof of their Apple business building. Idle u- sed The Long and Winding Road as a model for his fake-documentary about The Rutles and basically re-told the history of The Beatles pro- jected upon this imaginary rock band, adding essential elements of par- ody and the Pythonesque sense of surreal humor. -

COM 321, Documentary Form in Film & Television
1 COM 321, Documentary Form in Film, Television, & Interactive Media Humor and the Documentary The Four Humor Mechanisms (Neuendorf & Skalski et al.; see also the extended handout on the class web site) 1. Disparagement: Focusing on a perception of superiority, a one-up/one-down relationship, e.g., “putdown” humor, satire, sarcasm, self-deprecation, and the display of stupid behaviors (Freud, 1960; Hobbes, 1651/1981) 2. Incongruity: The juxtaposition of inconsistent or incongruous elements, e.g., wordplay (e.g., puns), “pure” incongruity, absurdity, and sight gags (Schopenhauer in Martin, 2007; Koestler, 1964). 3. Arousal/Dark: The creation of a high level of physiological arousal, e.g., slapstick, dark humor, sick humor, and sexual or naughty humor (Kant & Spencer; Spencer, 1860; Berlyne, 1972). 4. Social currency: Playful interaction, or building a sense of group belonging or understanding, e.g., joking to fit in, joking around socially, inside jokes, and parody (relying on a shared view of a known form, such as a film genre) (Chapman, 1983; Fry, 1963). Satire vs. Parody Parody deals with literary/cinematic norms (at the level of the cultural product) Satire deals with social/political norms (at the level of the culture or society) There is sometimes confusion between the two, perhaps because they may be used together (e.g., Western movie parody + satire on racism = Blazing Saddles) Four Stages of Genre Development (Giannetti and others) 1. Primitive 2. Classical 3. Revisionist 4. Parodic 2 Humor and Documentaries: 1. [Social] Satire -

TAKE the MONEY and RUN Woody Allen, 1969
TAKE THE MONEY AND RUN Woody Allen, 1969 TRANSCRIPT NARRATOR On December 1st, 1935, Mrs. Williams Starkwell, the wife of a New Jersey handyman, gives birth to her first and only child. It is a boy, and they name it Virgil. He is an exceptionally cute baby, with a sweet disposition. Before he is 25 years old, he will be wanted by police in six states, for assault, armed robbery, and illegal possession of a wart. Growing up in a slum neighbourhood where the crime rate is amongst the highest in the nation is not easy. Particularly for Virgil, who is small and frail compared to the other children. Virgil Starkwell attends this school, where he scores well on an IQ test, although his behaviour disturbs the teachers. We interviewed Mrs. Dorothy Lowry, a school teacher who remembers Virgil. DOROTHY LOWRY I remember one time, he stole a fountain pen. I didn't want to embarrass him. You know teachers have ways of doing things. So I said to the class. We will all close our eyes, and will the one who took the pen, please return it. Well, while our eyes were closed, he returned the pen. But he took the opportunity of feeling all the girls! Can I say feel? NARRATOR Spending most of his time in the streets, Virgil takes to crime at an early age. He is an immediate failure. He barely manages to escape with a gumball machine stuck on his hand. With both parents working to make ends meet, Virgil becomes closest to his grandfather, a 60-year-old German immigrant who takes the boy to movies and baseball games. -
