La furia dei flutti, evocata da Livio Andronico con la solennità arcaicizzante del saturnio, riverbera in modo inequivocabile la consapevolezza dei pericoli cui sono esposti i naviganti. Nella vigorosa interpretazione del modello omerico11, che ci offre il liberto tarantino, la potenza espressiva dei versi originali è infatti amplificata da scelte terminologiche12 orientate a esaltare tutta la terribilità del mare.

  • The Cult of Bendis in Athens and Thrace
    GRAECO-LATINA BRUNENSIA 18, 2013, 1 PETRA JANOUCHOVÁ (CHARLES UNIVERSITY, PRAGUE) THE CULT OF BENDIS IN ATHENS AND THRACE The Thracian goddess Bendis was worshipped in Classical Athens, and her cult became very popular in the 5th and 4th century BC. This article explores the available historiographical and archaeological record of an existing foreign cult within a Greek polis, and compares it to the data from the Thracian inland. As the literary sources limit themselves only to the Greek point of view, a combination of archaeological and epigraphical evidence has to be consulted in the case of Thrace. The aim of this paper is to determine and discuss the uni- formity or potential discrepancies in the presentation of Bendis in the place of her origin, as well as in her new context. The mutual relations between Bendis and her Greek counterpart is not to be omitted. Key words: Bendis, Athens, foreign cults, Attica, Thrace, iconography, nature deity The goddess Bendis is usually seen as a prototypical Thracian deity that was worshipped in Classical Athens from the 5th century BC onwards. The image presented by Greek authors is the most complete and cohesive repre- sentation of any Thracian deity that we have. On the other hand, the sources from the homeland of Bendis are mute or provide slightly confusing infor- mation. The fact that we are without any written literary sources from Thra- ce itself is amplified by discrepancies in the interpretation of archaeological and epigraphical evidence, which lacks uniformity in its study of the com- plexities of Bendis. This article presents a dichotomous image of Bendis, as perceived in Athens and in Thrace itself, and will attempt to coherently portray and understand the nature of the so called Thracian goddess.

    THE TrPE-SPECIES OF THE NORTH AMERICAN GENERA OF DIPTERA. By D. W. COQUILLETT, Custodian of Dipfera, U. S. National Museum. The great importance of knowing definitely what species is the type of any given genus is now recognized by practically every worker in the field of biology. For several 3"ears past the writer has been engaged in ascertaining the types of the genera of Diptera reported as occurring in North and Middle America, and the present paper gives the results of these labors. The rules adopted by the Interna^ tional Zoological Congress, as amended at the 1907 (Boston) meeting and the later decisions, published in Science for October 29, 1909, have been followed in all cases. The following rules or articles more especially concern us in the present work: Article 2. "The scientific designation of animals is uninominal for subgenera and all higher groups." A genus or subgenus, to which no species was originally referred by name, dates from its earliest published description or figure. Article 3 specifies that the scientific names of animals must be in Latin or, at least, must be latinized. This excludes certain works where only French or other vernacular names are employed, such as Dumeril's Exposition dime Methode Naturelle, published in 1801; his Considerations Generales, 1823; Schinz's Das Thierreich, 1823, and Latreille's Families Naturelles du Regne Animal, 1825. Article 19. "The original orthography of a name is to be preserved unless an error of transcription, a laj^sux calami, or a typographical error is evident." The so-called emended names are to be regarded only as misspelled names, and as such have no permanent place in the nomenclature.

INTRODUCCIÓ L'arribada de l'arquitectura militar republicana a Hispània té lloc amb posterioritat a l'inici de la II Guerra Púnica (218-202 aC) que enfrontà romans i cartaginesos en els territoris peninsulars. Un cop vençuda l'amenaça cartagi­ nesa, s'inicia una important estratègia expansionista de Roma per tenir el domini militar, comercial i econòmic d'Hispània al llarg del segle II aC. És precisament dins del segle II aC i els primers decennis del I aC que es docu­ menten les primeres fortificacions i muralles urbanes itàliques bastides en terres peninsulars. Les tècniques emprades mostren, tot sovint, una procedèn­ cia itàlica, encara que hi són presents indicis de les tècniques locals i indíge­ nes, a més a més d'una destacada influència hel·lenística en el disseny de determinades obres militars. De forma majoritària, aquestes fundacions urba­ nes i fortificacions de la província de la Hispània Citerior foren posicionades estratègicament al llarg del trajecte de la Via Heraclea: Emporiae, Gerunda, Baetulo, Olèrdola, Tarraco, etc. Aquest article forma part del treball de recerca de tercer cicle universitari Els sistemes defen­ sius romano-repubUcans de la Hispània Citerior: els casos d'Olèrdola, Emporiae i Tàrraco i la seva confrontació amb les fortificacions de la península itàlica.
