A NUMISMATIC LEGACY FROM PORTUGAL’S ‘WAR OF THE TWO BROTHERS’ John E. Sandrock As an avid paper money enthusiast I have always been intrigued by the little mysteries that sometimes show up. Such a baffling puzzle surfaced some years ago after I had acquired a group of early Portuguese currency dating from the late 1700s. These notes had all been overprinted with red sunbursts bearing the name of the king of Portugal. The difficulty was, that some notes were attributed to Pedro IV, and some to Miguel I. My desire to learn why this should be led me to the explanation, but not before I had probed into the discovery of a continent and learned something of the consequences of the Napoleonic War. These seemingly unrelated events eventually led me to the explanation and to my awareness of the War of the Two Brothers. Today Portugal is one of the smallest and least developed nations of Western Europe. There was a time, however, when Portugal played a far larger role in world history, one greatly disproportionate to its size. Those were the days of exploration when Portugal’s greatness reached the four corners of the earth. Such men as Prince Henry the Navigator, Bartholomeu Dias, Vasco da Gama and Pedro Cabral laid claim to vast lands in the name of Portugal. As colonization followed exploration, the small country was hard pressed to find sufficient administrators and colonists to maintain control of her far-flung possessions. Because she had an insufficient population base to maintain large armies and the necessary administrators in her newly found colonies, these lands gradually slipped away from Portuguese control, finding other political accommodations. -

FRANCISCO COUTINHO, 3RD EARL OF REDONDO (1546-1564) POR 1 Nuno Vila-Santa 2 Portuguese Center for Global History – CHAM (FCSH-UNL-UAÇ) New University of Lisbon Abstract Portrayed as a brilliant Renaissance figure that combined success in the military with the love for knowledge, D. Francisco’s patronage is well-known. This article compares the post-mortem written memory of Coutinho with an evaluation of the offices he held: the captaincy of Arzila (1546-1549) and the viceroyalty of India (1561-1564). The household and stay of D. Francisco at Arzila are analysed, as well as his strategy for recovering the royal grace, marked by his appointments to governor of the “Casa da Suplicação” (1559) and the viceroyalty of India (1561). At the viceroyalty, D. Francisco faced great expectations. Comparing Coutinho’s policy with the orders he received it is possible to ascertain whether the expectations of his appointment were fulfi- lled. This article reflects on the relations between different identities within the Portuguese Empire while focusing in a case-study of the shaping of historical memory. Machado de Assis – Brazilian Literature in Translation is an initiative of Bra- zil’s National Library, in conjunction with Itaú Cultural, São Paulo State Offi- cial Press and the Ministry of External Relations. Our objective is to provide the international publishing industry with access to translated texts by Bra- zilian writers in an effort to boost their visibility abroad and foster the sale of foreign rights to their work. Each edition presents twenty new transla- tions. The magazine is one of several National Library initiatives designed to make Brazilian literature more widely known, such as translation grants, translator residencies in Brazil and support for publications in other Portu- guese-speaking countries. Graduate Program in Dance Studies The Ohio State University 2015 Dissertation Committee: Karen Eliot, Adviser Nena Couch Susan Petry Angelika Gerbes Copyright by Ligia Ravenna Pinheiro 2015 ABSTRACT The Real Theatro de São Carlos de Lisboa employed Italian choreographers from its inauguration in 1793 to the middle of the nineteenth century. Many libretti for the ballets produced for the S. Carlos Theater have survived and are now housed in the National Library of Portugal. This dissertation focuses on the narratives of the libretti in this collection, and their importance as documentation of ballets of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, from the inauguration of the S. Carlos Theater in 1793 to 1850. This period of dance history, which has not received much attention by dance scholars, links the earlier baroque dance era of the eighteenth century with the style of ballet of the 1830s to the 1850s. Portugal had been associated with Italian art and artists since the beginning of the eighteenth century. This artistic relationship continued through the final decades of the eighteenth and the first half of the nineteenth century. The majority of the choreographers working in Lisbon were Italian, and the works they created for the S. Carlos Theater followed the Italian style of ballet d’action. -

It is noted for its soccer and popular celebrations. It is also known for its undeniable problems. And it is one of the most closed and regulated economies on the planet. The Economic Freedom Index published by the Fraser Institute rates 162 countries for the year 2017. In that listing, Brazil comes in 120th place (Gwartney et al. 2019, 9). Brazil was under Portugal’s power for centuries, becoming a united kingdom under a traditional monarchy in 1815. It became a constitutional monarchy after its independence in 1822; a republic controlled by oligarchies after a coup d’état in 1889; a dictatorship in the 1930s; it tried to maintain a constitutional democracy between 1946 and 1964; and it was a military regime between 1964 and 1985. Then the current democratic period began, called the New Republic. Regardless of the period, the same kinds of challenges were experienced, varying only by degree. Economic problems like inflation, public debt, and excessive regulation are a constant in Brazilian history, appearing in all of its historical periods and political regimes. Brazilian intellectuals have blamed Brazil’s troubles on several cultural char- acteristics. One of them is the prevalence of patrimonialism, a system “in which the leader organizes his political power as the exercise of his domestic management” (Medard 1991, 326).2 Brazil’s history is marked by many military coups, dictatorial cycles, and chronic economic statism. -

Riva Berleant-Schiller presented a unit appropriate for university courses in geography and anthropology. William Blough proposed an outline for an undergraduate course on Modern Brazil. Patricia Cooper developed a unit on Brazil for an undergraduate course in teaching social studies in the elementary school. David Georgi geared his unit plan on Brazilian culture to focus on at-risk secondary students. Julie Kline emphasized environmental issues in Brazil for a teacher inservice. Dennis Konshak described an undergraduate college course on Brazilian film. Saralee Lamb compiled articles, facts, recommended readings, and video sources on Brazil. Alan LeBaron discussed Indian nationalism in Brazil. Ruth Ohayon looked at women's rights in Brazil. Jeffery Rosen presented two study plans for secondary history students.
