Syvitski and G. Robert Brakenridge*, Community to investigate inundation dynamics (Brakenridge et al., 1994, Surface Dynamics Modeling System, INSTAAR, University of 1998; O’Grady et al., 2011). Here, we analyze data from a suite of Colorado, Boulder, Colorado 90309-0545, USA, orbital sensors to track the 2010 Indus River flooding at high spatial resolution and frequent temporal sampling. The Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) provides topography at 90 m ABSTRACT spatial and ~1.3 m vertical resolution; the data were collected in The catastrophic flood of 2010 along the Indus River began in February 2000, during the dry season when the Indus River was at July with unusually intense but not unprecedented rainfall in the extreme low stage (Digital Elevation Model [DEM]; see GSA upland catchment. During four months, close to 2,000 fatalities Supplemental Data1). GeoEye data show surface water changes occurred and ~20,000,000 inhabitants were displaced. The finer than 1 m; the MODIS sensor revisits twice daily at much meteorological events triggered but did not cause this “natural” coarser spatial resolution and AMSR-E provides independent disaster. Analysis of multi-temporal remote sensing and monitoring of river discharge changes.

  • Trophic State Index, Morphoedaphic Index and Fish Yield Prediction in a Sub-Tropical Lake, Manchar (Sindh), Pakistan
B;zng/adeshj. Fish. Res., 10(2), 2006: 131-137 Trophic State Index, Morphoedaphic index and fish yield prediction in a sub-tropical lake, Manchar (Sindh), Pakistan S. I. H. Jafri, M.A. Mahar*, W. A. Baloch and N. T. Narejo Department of Fresh Water Biology and Fisheries University of Sindh, Jamshoro, Sindh, Pakistan * Corresponding author Abstract Limnological factors of a sub-tropical lake Manchar were studied on seasonal basis. The mean values of various parameters were: Transparency .(secchi disc reading): 90.5 cm, Orthophosphate: 0.257 mg/l, TDS: 3310.5 mg/l, Conductivity: 5232 µs/l, Total Chlorophyll (Planktonic): 31.3 µg/l, Planktonic biomass: 5466 µg/l. Trophic state index (TSI) was calculated by using Carlson's (1977) equations. Mean TSI for transparency was 61, while for orthophosphate and chlorophyll, it was 82 and 64 respectively. TSI values indicate advanced eutrophic state of Manchar Lake. Morphoedaphic index (MEI) was also calculated on seasonal basis. The mean values were, TDS: 1103, conductivity: 1744, alkalinity: 60, transparency: 29 and biomass (plankton dry weight): 1746. Fish yield 2 prediction for Manchar Lake (Z = 3m, mean area = 100 km ) was calculated by using MEI values. The results were quite different among various parameters. Conductivity (89.lmt/y), biomass (67.6 mt/y) and TDS (44.6 mt/y) were found to be good predictors of fish yield. Chlorophyll, transparency and alkalinity values gave very low estimate. Key words: TSI, MI, Fish yield, Lake Introduction Manchar Lake is a floodplain natural lake located at a distance of about 18 km from Sehwan town of district Dadu (Sindh), at longitude 67°-34' E to 67°- 43' E and latitude 26°-23' to 26°-28' N.

Pakistan Geographical Review, Vol.76, No1, June. 2021, PP 64-76 SPATIO-TEMPORAL CHANGE ASSESSMENT OF LAKE MANCHAR PAKISTAN AND LAKE ARAL KAZAKHSTAN USING NORMALIZED DIFFERENCE VEGETATION INDEX N.H CHANDIO*, N. N. CHANDIO*, MAIRAJ ALI PANHWAR** MUMTAZ HUSSAIN MAHAR*** *Department of Geography, Shah Abdul Latif University, Khairpur, Pakistan ** Department of Geography, University of Gujrat, Punjab, Pakistan ***Department of Computer Science, Shah Abdul Latif University, Khairpur, Pakistan Corresponding: [email protected] ABSTRACT Water is an essential nutrient for life on the Earth, which is found in Oceans, Rivers, and Lakes. Lakes played a vital role to maintain the ecosystem and developed the socio-economic balance. Climate change is responsible for flooding and drought on the Earth's surface, and directly affects wetlands, depend upon the nature of the topography. Owing to the raising of world temperature, glaciers are melting, and sea-Levels are continually rising. On the contrary, a lot of regions are facing drought due to a shortage of River water and precipitation. Fertile lands are converting into deserts, which causes socio-economic deprivation. Lake Manchar is one of the largest lakes of South Asia, located in Sindh Province. The Lake is fighting for its survival, the Lake being degraded by the 1990s owing to the construction of the Right Bank Outfall Drain (R.B.O.D. The Aral Lake was the 4th Largest Lake in the world till the 1960s, which was a direct or indirect source of income for a million people. From 1960 to 2014 local fishermen migrated to another place for their live hood, a white desert has appeared at the place of the lake.

ibAmierwan%Mfusdum r'lo~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ PUBLISHED BY THE AMERICAN MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY CENTRAL PARK WEST AT 79TH STREET, NEW YORK, N. Y. I0024 NUMBER 2302 OCTOBER 20, I967 The Origin, Character, and Decline of an Early Civilization BY WALTER A. FAIRSERVIS, JR.' INTRODUCTION The Harappan civilization which arose in the Indus River Valley toward the end of the third millennium before Christ (2300 B.C. to 1700 B.C.) can be regarded as the first of the manifestations of civili- zation to occur outside western Asia and Egypt. Since geographical remoteness tends to eliminate direct contact as the probable reason for its existence, its origins, character, and demise are therefore of no little scientific interest. Its very remoteness should allow us, in almost clinical fashion, to analyze this civilization as a cultural manifestation the com- plexities of which are obscured only by the necessarily incomplete arche- ological record. The primary nature of the phenomena of civilization that characterizes the past 5000 years of human existence can be reasonably probed if we utilize the opportunity presented to us in the extensive remains of the Harappan civilization. A beginning of such an examina- tion has been made and is the purpose of continued researches by a number of scholars. On the basis of present research we may ask and expect qualified answers to questions as to the origins, character, and decline of the Harappan civilization. The evidence at hand indicates that we are obtaining a much clearer picture than has hitherto been available, a picture that reveals a great deal as to the mechanisms by 1 Research Associate, Department of Anthropology, the American Museum of Natural History; Thomas Burke Memorial Museum, University of Washington, Seattle.
