August Derleth Young Writers' Anthology August Derleth Young Writers’ Anthology 2014 Third & Fourth Grade Who was August Derleth? August Derleth was Wisconsin’s most prolific writer, producing over 150 books in his lifetime. He wrote poetry, short stories, journals, historical and romantic novels, mysteries and books for children. He was also an editor, publisher, and the owner of Arkham House, a publishing house devoted exclusively to the publication of ghost stories, fantasy, science fiction and the macabre. August Derleth was a man of simple needs. He was very generous in sharing his talents and interests with students and aspiring writers. Derleth was a born naturalist and a realistic critic. His complex nature made him the subject of controversy, but those who knew him well defend his nonconformity. They point out his fondness for another nonconformist, Henry Thoreau, and would liken them, forgetting that Thoreau was a much more reclusive man. August Derleth loved his small town, Sauk Prairie, and the people who lived there. He loved his people, not in spite of their human qualities, but because of them. Many of his writings tell about life in Sauk Prairie and he saw and experienced it. This may well be the measure of his writing stature. Tom Pease “T om Pea se has an infectious sense of fun and community building. With movement, sign language, humor, and joy, he creates concerts that leave audiences laughing and singing. He’s performed full time since 1982, often giving more than 200 performances per year. He’s also a frequent presenter at early childhood and environmental conferences, keynoting and leading breakout sessions that explore the role of music in shaping our lives and the world we live in. Tom connects and inspires with every show he does.” Biography Tom was born and raised in Burlington, Iowa along the Mississippi river and its surrounding bluffs gave him foundation love of the natural world. Eventually this led him to teaching environmental education for 3½ years in California which is where he first started singing with kids. He then moved to his brother’s farm in Wisconsin to teach a bit and learn animal husbandry, carpentry and masonry skills. After a few years of working with his hands, he began to miss working with kids. Music was his vehicle back to them. He now resides in rural Amherst, Wisconsin on 75 acres of rolling woods and fields with his wife, Louise and their sons, Broegy and Morgan and their dog and cat. • The Effects of Digital Music Distribution" (2012)
Southern Illinois University Carbondale OpenSIUC Research Papers Graduate School Spring 4-5-2012 The ffecE ts of Digital Music Distribution Rama A. Dechsakda [email protected] Follow this and additional works at: http://opensiuc.lib.siu.edu/gs_rp The er search paper was a study of how digital music distribution has affected the music industry by researching different views and aspects. I believe this topic was vital to research because it give us insight on were the music industry is headed in the future. Two main research questions proposed were; “How is digital music distribution affecting the music industry?” and “In what way does the piracy industry affect the digital music industry?” The methodology used for this research was performing case studies, researching prospective and retrospective data, and analyzing sales figures and graphs. Case studies were performed on one independent artist and two major artists whom changed the digital music industry in different ways. Another pair of case studies were performed on an independent label and a major label on how changes of the digital music industry effected their business model and how piracy effected those new business models as well. I analyzed sales figures and graphs of digital music sales and physical sales to show the differences in the formats. I researched prospective data on how consumers adjusted to the digital music advancements and how piracy industry has affected them. Last I concluded all the data found during this research to show that digital music distribution is growing and could possibly be the dominant format for obtaining music, and the battle with piracy will be an ongoing process that will be hard to end anytime soon.

  • This Paper Examines the Role of Media Technologies in the Horror
Monstrous and Haunted Media: H. P. Lovecraft and Early Twentieth-Century Communications Technology James Kneale his paper examines the role of media technologies in the horror fic- tion of the American author H. P. Lovecraft (1890-1937). Historical geographies of media must cover more than questions of the distri- Tbution and diffusion of media objects, or histories of media representations of space and place. Media forms are both durable and portable, extending and mediating social relations in time and space, and as such they allow us to explore histories of time-space experience. After exploring recent work on the closely intertwined histories of science and the occult in late nine- teenth-century America and Europe, the discussion moves on to consider the particular case of those contemporaneous media technologies which became “haunted” almost as soon as they were invented. In many ways these hauntings echo earlier responses to the printed word, something which has been overlooked by historians of recent media. Developing these ideas I then suggest that media can be monstrous because monstrosity is centrally bound up with representation. Horrific and fantastic fictions lend themselves to explorations of these ideas because their narratives revolve around attempts to witness impossible things and to prove their existence, tasks which involve not only the human senses but those technologies de- signed to extend and improve them: the media. The remainder of the paper is comprised of close readings of several of Lovecraft’s stories which sug- gest that mediation allowed Lovecraft to reveal monstrosity but also to hold it at a distance, to hide and to distort it.

Battle of the Books 2018 An Eagle in the Snow by Michael Morpurgo England, 1940. Barney’s home has been destroyed by bombing, and he and his mother are traveling to the countryside when German planes attack. Their train is forced to take shelter in a tunnel and there, in the darkness, a stranger ― a fellow passenger ― begins to tell them a story about two young soldiers who came face to face in the previous war. One British, one German. Both lived, but the British soldier was haunted by the encounter once he realized who the German was: the young Adolf Hitler. The British soldier made a moral decision. Was it the right one? Finest Hours: The True Story of a Heroic Sea Rescue by Michael J. Tougias and Casey Sherman On the night of February 18, 1952, during one of the worst winter storms that New England has ever seen, two oil tankers just off the shore of Cape Cod were torn in half. With the storm in full force and waves up to 70 feet high, four coast guardsmen headed out to sea in a tiny lifeboat to come to the rescue. They were the only hope for the stranded sailors. Despite incredible obstacles, these brave men risked their lives, remembering the unofficial Coast Guard motto: You have to go out, but you do not have to come back. This is a fast- paced, uplifting story that puts young readers in the middle of the action. It's a gripping true tale of heroism and survival in the face of the elements.
