WHAT IS THE BIG SCRUB? The Big Scrub was ’s largest subtropical rainforest, which covered 75,000 hectares extending from Ballina in the east to in the north, Meerschaum Vale in the south and Lismore in the west. Unfortunately since European settlement the Big Scrub Rainforest has been reduced to less than 1% of its original size. Its remaining remnants have extremely rich biodiversity and incorporate in their gene pool 180 million years of evolution from the rainforests of Gondwana. The remnants are listed as endangered because of grave threats to their survival. Saving the Big Scrub remnants is a major activity of Big Scrub Landcare and its 11 partner organisations in the Endangered Lowland Rainforest Restoration Program. LOGISTICS AND SAFETY. The Information Centre is open all day for general information, program details and making donations to the Big Scrub Restoration Project. Please take care moving around. Please keep to the designated access tracks and watch out for uneven ground. Please be aware that some plants can cause scratches, stings and allergies. A detailed listing of safety issues and controls is held at the Information Centre and please come and visit if you need any assistance on the day. www.bigscrubrainforest.org.au
