Richmond Valley Council has already spent $944,000 in legal fees from 1999-January 2009, assuming by 2019 well in excess of $1 million dollars in ratepayer funds. The waste of our money on this unsustainable development needs to end. 2. Environmental concerns Koala - is a threatened species, who are losing natural habitat specifically in the Evans/Woodburn/Broadwater region as a result of land clearing for the highway, Iron Gates will displace and remove critical natural corridor that allows the koala & other species to migrate. The recent Bush Fires has accelerating the destruction of native habitat for the koala and other native species proceeding the tragic Rappville & Bora Ridge fires. Koala droppings were found on the perimeter of the proposed development site, a reasonable person knowing Koala’s move to find specific eucalypt trees to feed on would think they would move within the site boundary to source the specific trees they eat that are established within the proposed development site.

Ken Sapwell A bid to hide councillors’ expenses from public scrutiny appears set to come unstuck at this month’s council meeting. Greens councillor Katie Milne is expected to win majority support for a push to re-instate a list of councillors’ individual expenses tradition- ally published in an annual report. Senior council staff quietly axed the list fol- lowing the return of the new council in Sep- tember last year after the previous council was sacked in 2005 and administrators appointed. Chinderah-based councillor Kevin Skinner blew the whistle on the change when he de- scribed expenses being claimed by some coun- cillors on their trips away as ‘exorbitant.’ ‘I just don’t think it’s necessary for all the councillors to be going off to these things all the time,’ he complained, adding he had attended just one. Its position at the junction of the two arms of the Tweed, nearly midway between Cudgen and Murwillumbah, makes its exten- sion only a matter of time. Already the Commercial Bank has deemed it politic to be repre- sented, a branch under the management of Mr. Budd having recently been opened on premises adjoining Messrs. Smith and Brett’s Hotel. Then there is a carpenter's establishment, a new dispensary, and other business places I hear are shortly to be erected on allotments for which a high price has recently been giv- en. A site for a Government wharf was marked out some time since, but so far down the river and at such a distance from the centre of the town ship as to be of little use to the majority of the residents. The departmental reason given for selecting such a site is the depth of the water at that point ; but several of the townspeople argue that there is sufficient water nearer the punt for any vessel that can cross the sand flats, or in fact navigate the Tweed. Representations to that effect have been made to the department, and the matter should be fully looked into by the latter before the work is commenced. A road runs along either bank of the river from Tumbulgum to Murwillumbah which is dis- tant about seven miles. The bulk of the settlement lies in this direction, but there is also a large extent of country selected in the opposite direction, between- Tumbulgum and the Heads.
