Inledning En av de mest betydande protosionisterna, för- Mehring, som har skrivit en av de mest kända fattaren till den sionistiska klassikern Rom und biografierna över Marx.     50, enero 2021:1-43 El primer gobierno obrero de la historia: Los añadidos de Karl Marx a la Historia de la Comuna de 1871 de Lissagaray The first workers' government in history: Karl Marx's additions to Lissagaray's 1871 History of the Commune Daniel Gaido* Resumen: En los círculos marxistas es común hacer referencia a La guerra civil en Francia de Karl Marx para un análisis teórico del significado histórico de la Comuna de París, y al libro Historia de la comuna de 1871 de Prosper-Olivier Lissagaray para una descripción fáctica de la insurrección de los trabajadores de París y su represión por la Asamblea Nacional radicada de Versalles y dirigida por Thiers. Lo que es menos conocido es que Marx supervisó la traducción alemana del libro de Lissagaray y realizó numerosas adiciones al mismo. En este artículo describimos los añadidos de Marx al libro de Lissagaray, mostrando cómo contribuyen a concretizar su análisis de la Comuna de París y cómo se relacionan con la escisión en la Asociación Internacional de los Trabajadores entre marxistas y anarquistas que tuvo lugar tras la derrota de la Comuna. También mostramos cómo las adiciones de Marx a la versión alemana del libro de Lissagaray estaban vinculadas a su participación en el recién creado Partido Socialista Obrero de Alemania y a su crítica al programa que éste había adoptado en el congreso celebrado en la ciudad de Gotha. As a result of some recent speeches in the Reichstag, part of the Socialist press is again occupying itself a great deal with the question of patriotism and militarism. The declaration, given in the Reichstag, that against a foreign enemy who frivolously drew Germany into war, or sought to seize German territory, the Social-Democrats, as well as others, would be ready to fight, is alluded to as an awkward compromise with the way that foreign policy is at present managed and the repudiation by the Socialist fraction in the Reichstag of the responsibility for comrade Karl Liebknecht’s anti-militarist pamphlet has been blamed as unjustifiable, as siding against the necessary sharp opposition to militarism. It is said to be an offence against 1 Patriotism, Militarism and… Eduard Bernstein Halaman 2 the international obligations of Social-Democracy. Especially the first-mentioned declaration is considered as calculated to increase the difficulty for Socialists of other lands to fight against their militarist opponents. As it is easy for a sly diplomacy to represent itself as the provoked party, this action actually gives the Governments a free hand to all sorts of warlike intrigues, thereby increasing the menace to peace. It will be useful to take up our stand, in these columns also, towards these questions, the importance of which nobody can doubt.

    August Bebel: Ein Sozialdemokrat gegen Eroberungskrieg und „Verpreußung“ James Retallack University of Toronto On 26 November 1870, August Bebel (1840-1913) rose in the Reichstag of the North German Confederation to criticize the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71 and the annexation of the French provinces of Elsaß und Lothringen.1 He justified his party’s refusal to grant the funds needed to carry on the military campaign against France; he pointed to the likelihood of French revanchisme if the popular call for annexation were carried out; and he directed his attack not only against members of the upper classes and the bourgeoisie but also against all those he labelled pseudo-patriotic (and stingy) supporters of war. On every one of these grounds, Bebel argued, the booty of war was undeserved. The President of the Reichstag intervened a number of times during Bebel’s speech to try to silence him as he steered close to the limits of parliamentary propriety, but Bebel continued with his plea for a peace without conquest. “Das Nationalitätsprinzip ist meiner Ansicht nach ein durchaus reaktionäres Prinzip. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. ...................................................................... 2 ‘Lokalisten and Sozialdemokraten: ‘localist’ trade unionism in the German building industry, 1868-1893’ This study looks at the first part of what for want of a better term could be described as the ‘pre-history’ of German syndicalism, that is, at its earliest roots among building worker supporters of the ‘localist’ conception of trade union organization before 1893. Its aim is not to ‘uncover’ the localist movement’s history for the benefit of English- speaking readers unfamiliar with it but, rather, to seek to find in the earlier history of this movement an explanation as to why a branch of trade unionism which initially defined itself as a tactical response to restrictive state legislation (above all, the Prussian Law of Association of 11th March 1850) continued to exist after the ban which most local laws of association placed on political association was over-written by national legislation which guaranteed the right to such (for men) in December 1899. How did a ‘tactical response’ come to assume a longevity none of its earlier advocates had foreseen? This begs a second question: how significant, then, was the legal framework? It is my belief that the answers to these questions can already be found in the localist building worker movement’s earlier history.

    P1: KDA/OSZ P2:KDA/OSZ QC:KDA 0521875528pre CUNY754/Fischer 0 521 87552 8 January 19, 2007 15:50 The Socialist Response to Antisemitism in Imperial Germany What set antisemites apart from anti-antisemites in Imperial Germany was not so much what they thought about ‘the Jews’, but what they thought should be done about them. Like most anti-antisemites, German Social Democrats felt that the antisemites had a point but took matters too far. In fact, Socialist anti-antisemitism often did not hinge on the antisemites’ anti-Jewish orientation at all. Even when it did, the Socialists’ arguments generally did more to consolidate than subvert generally accepted notions regarding ‘the Jews’. By focusing on a broader set of perceptions accepted by both antisemites and anti-antisemites and drawing a variety of new sources into the debate, this study offers a startling reinterpretation of seemingly well-rehearsed issues, including the influence of Karl Marx’s ‘Zur Juden- frage’ and the positions of various leading Social Democrats (Franz Mehring, Eduard Bernstein, August Bebel, Wilhelm Liebknecht, Karl Kautsky, Rosa Luxemburg) and their peers. Lars Fischer holds a BA in Modern History with First Class Honours (2000) from Queen Mary and Westfield College (University of London) and a PhD (2003) from University College London (UCL), where he is Lecturer in German History in the German Department and an Honorary Research Fellow in the Hebrew and Jewish Studies Department.
