Biographical Note Born in Esslingen, Wrttemberg 1838, died in , 1907; trained as a cloth- manufacturer and clothier; social democratic organizer, known as `der rote Postmeister'; one of the founders of the Arbeiterbildungsverein in 1863 and consequently co-founder in 1869 of the Sozialdemokratische Arbeiterpartei (SDAP); active as a union, cooperative and party organizer as well as a manager of the printing cooperatives in Leipzig 1874-1876 and Barmen 1877; member of the Reichstag for the SDAP 1874-1878, from 1875 the Sozialistische Arbeiterpartei Deutschlands (SAPD); under the `Sozialistengesetz' he was in charge of the illegal distribution in Germany of the party's exile organ Der Sozialdemokrat at first from Zurich and later, after having been expelled from in 1888, from London; returned to Germany in 1901 to head the publishing house of the .
