All rights reserved. https://www.ide.go.jp Research Bulletin for Arab Nationalism and State Formation: The Maghrib Experiences Objectives of the project The project analyzes the historical development of nationalism in the Maghrib countries (i.e., Algeria, Tunisia, and Morocco) with a special focus on the local features of Maghribian nationalism which distinguishes the Maghrib region from other Arab countries. The reason for our choice of topic is that the academic discussion on Arab nationalism has conventionally centered on the Mashriq (East Arab) region, leaving aside the Maghrib (West Arab) region’s experiences. By studying cases of the Maghrib region, the project reconsiders some unquestioned premises and prejudices in the existing literature of Arab nationalism and thus contributes to a theoretical elaboration of studies of Arab nationalism. More concretely, we discuss the following topics: the relationship between nationalism and religion in the Maghrib; the validity of the concept of Waṭaniyya (the attachment to individual nation-states) as nested within Qawmiyya (the feeling of being part of a larger Arab people); the national historiography as a modern, invented tradition and the role of Arabism and Islam in it; and the role of regional supra-national identity (pan-Maghrib solidarity) as part of the formation of nationalism. One of the important premises of our project is that nationalism is a modern phenomenon. Built on theoretical studies of nationalism which have flourished since the 1980s, the project supposes that premodern communitarian identities (such as religious affiliations, belongingness to certain linguistic, cultural, or “ethnic” groups, and loyalty to particular polities or governments) have been transformed into modern national identities (Smith 1998). -

Moreover, it has accomplished this feat without a ruling political party, considered by most scholars to be the key to stable authoritarianism. Why has the Iranian political system proven so durable? Moreover, can the explanation for such durability advance a more deductive science of authoritarian rule? My dissertation places Iran within the context of guardian regimes—or hybrid regimes with ideological military, clerical or monarchical institutions steeped in the politics of the state, such as Turkey and Thailand—to explain the durability of unstable polities that should be theoretically prone to collapse. “Hybrid” regimes that combine competitive elections with nondemocratic forms of rule have proven to be highly volatile and their average longevity is significantly shorter than that of other regime types. -

Hassan ii Abstract This dissertation investigates the ways in which three francophone Algerian women authors, Taos Amrouche, Hélène Cixous, and Assia Djebar, approach their respective religions and portray them in their works. Through textual evidence from their fictional works, I show how the problematic of religion in Algeria – where the three Abrahamic religions have been in tension at different times in recent history – has underpinned these authors’ sense of self and being in the world. I examine how they all redefine religion out of a feeling of exclusion and traumatization and add female and woman-centered voices to a larger conversation on the nature of religiosity. All three of these authors are feminists, yet they embrace religion, all the while defining their own understanding of it. In order to do this, they reread the original texts of their religions, as well as the cultural texts surrounding them. Taos Amrouche, caught between the European culture to which she is drawn because of her family’s Catholicism, and the Muslim-Berber culture of her ancestors, expresses a constant feeling of alienation, and portrays a trauma that she attempts to heal through the use of autobiographical writing. -

social sciences $€ £ ¥ Article The Vietnam War, the Church, the Christian Democratic Party and the Italian Left Catholics Daniela Saresella Department of Historical Studies, University of Milan, 20122 Milan, Italy; [email protected] Received: 6 March 2018; Accepted: 28 March 2018; Published: 3 April 2018 Abstract: Over the years of the Cold War, the conflict in Vietnam assumed the significance of a clash between two civilizations, the West and communism. Italian Catholics thus found themselves not only invoking the end of the conflict, but also expressing their evaluations on the choices made in international politics by the two superpowers. The positions assumed by the ecclesiastic Institution, the Christian Democrats and the Catholic world in Italy towards the war in Indochina were not identical: in fact, if—with a few exceptions—the ecclesiastic hierarchy was distinguished by its extreme caution, in the Catholic party different positions became manifest. It was mainly in Catholic associations, and in general amongst believers closer to the experience of the Vatican Council, that a radical sense of aversion to U.S. foreign policy developed. The Italian Church The sixties saw a period of profound change, not only in the West but in other continents, too: the civil rights movement in the United States, the battles against oppressive regimes in Latin America, the cultural revolution in China, the upheavals in Eastern European countries and the leading role played by young people all enlivened the decade. The Catholic Church was also marked by radical innovations with the pontificate of John XXIII and from 1962 with the start of the Second Vatican Council. -

Religious law versus secular law The example of the get refusal in Dutch, English and Israeli law Matthijs de Blois* 1. Introduction The revelation of the Torah on Mount Sinai as described in the book of Exodus is archetypical for religious law. ‘Then God spoke all these words (…).’1 Religious law is God-given. The law is theonomous and is binding ipso facto, independent of the consent of the governed. It may be a living instrument, but it is not subject to adaptation to changing opinions or practices among those who are bound by it. It is in that sense unchangeable, although it has to be interpreted by the members of the religious community or more specifically by those endowed with the task of interpreting the law. As far as the contents of the law are concerned, religious law tends to stress inter alia communal values and a submission to authority within hierarchical structures. It should also be underlined that in religious law there is no ‘public’ and ‘private’ distinction, which is so common to an Enlightenment approach to the law. It is not even possible to separate the relation- ship between God and man from those between men among each other. A violation of our obligations towards other persons implies a violation of God’s law and it therefore has its effect on the relationship with God. The religious is not a separate sphere next to the secular. There is no secular sphere. That is especially true for Judaism, which, in Maoz’s words, ‘encompasses all aspects of society and of an individual’s life.’2 In this day and age we can safely assume that religious law is based on a long tradition which already existed long before the idea of a pure secular law entered the scene with the Enlightenment. -
