8 The Vail Voice To place an ad call: 520-490-0962 School Funding for Next Year by Darcy Mentone Now that the very long 2019 legislative session has wrapped up, we knowwhat school funding will look like next year. Arizona schools are still among of the lowest funded in the nation; however, things are starting to improve. This year’s budget included funding for: • Teacher Pay Raises (part of the 20% by 2020 plan) • District Additional Assistance (capital funding) • Building Renewal (to repair school facilities) • New School Construction (to build new schools in Arizona) • Results Based Funding (highly controversial performance funding) • Grant Money (to add counselors and school resource offi cers to schools) • Career and Technical Education One of the most exciting things, that happened this session, is that the law was changed so that Vail can continue to run (and get funding for) their early college. This year, almost 50 Vail seniors attended school at Pima Community College. They were taking two classes from a Vail teacher, and spent the rest of their day as college students. Their college classes gave them both high school and college credit. Therefore, they graduated from high school this year and completed their freshman year of college. However, because of a glitch in the law, the state was not providing funding for these From left to right: Stacy Winstryg, Linda students and Vail would Feltheim, MaRico Tippett, Catherine Byars, have had to shut down the You can be a Andrea Black program, had the law not been fi xed. daughter again. Thanks to Senators Heather Carter and David Gowan, and Representatives Let us help. Michelle Udall and Gail Griffi n, the law was changed and the program will continue. This program is so promising that VUSD has been off ered a grant to expand it to other Pima College campuses, so that students from other school districts can attend. The Vail Parent Network hopes that this legislative session is a sign of things to come, and that education funding will continue to improve until schools and teachers have everything they need to teach and care for our children. 20 The Vail Voice To place an ad call: 520-490-0962 Christ Lutheran Church Holds “Pack-A-Thon” 2019 In Arizona, approximately one out of four children struggle with hunger. During the school year these children are able to take advantage of free and reduced meals at school, but over the weekends and breaks they are faced with heightened food insecurity. Christ Lutheran Vail Church wants to ease the burden on local hungry families by holding a food packaging event in conjunction with The Outreach Program. Our “Pack-A-Thon 2019,” being held June 30, 2019, will result in 30,000 quality, nutritious meals that will be donated to the local ReSources Vail Food Bank for distribution to Vail residents in need. In order to do this, we need your help! In one hour, we could feed thousands. There are all kinds of volunteer positions available. Some will help us get set up for the event, check in volunteers, and break down when we're done, most will help us pass out food and get meals packed. If you can do light work for an hour while having fun with your family and friends, this is the opportunity for you! The event will take place in the morning on Sunday, 30 June in the Cienega High School Auditorium at 9 AM. Please sign up for a volunteer position on the following link: https://volunteersignup.org/FDFYJ If you are not able to volunteer but still wish to help, we are also seeking donations to help fund the project. You can donate to the event on our Go Fund me site: GoFundme – gf.me/u/rx7966. Your donation is tax deductible, as Christ Lutheran Vail qualifies as a 501(c)3 charitable organization under the IRS guidelines for churches. 32 The Vail Voice To place an ad call: 520-490-0962 St. Rita in the Desert Catholic Church and the Vail School District’s Transition to Work Program Partnership by Wayne Glembin Fifteen years ago, a relationship was forged between Vail School District’s Transition from School to Work (TSW) program and St. Rita in the Desert Catholic Church. At that time, TSW was a fledgling transition program for high school students participating in special education at Cienega High School. The program sought to help students develop work skills while connecting them with various support agencies and potential employers for their transition from high school to their lives beyond high school. One of the first student work crews established was the landscape maintenance crew and their very first customer was St. Rita. A young parishioner from St. Rita was a member of this landscape maintenance crew and his father happened to be a Knight in St. Rita’s Knights of Columbus council. Quickly, a friendship between the Knights of Columbus and TSW developed out of this St. Rita In The Desert Knights of Columbus Council original work presents a check for $900 to the Vail School District TSW arrangement. program. Pictured, from left, are: Wayne Glembin, Julie Every fall, the Wilson, James DeBake and Erik Sorensen. Knights hold their Tootsie Roll Drive to benefit people with intellectual disabilities. Students with intellectual disabilities are some of the very students served by the TSW program, so the friendship became a true partnership. For more than a decade, staff members and students from the TSW program, now a district-wide program operating at all five of Vail’s high schools, have participated with the Knights in their Tootsie Roll Drives. St. Rita’s Knights, in turn, gift Vail’s TSW program with a portion of the proceeds from these drives. While TSW is partially funded by the state and the school district, the contributions from the Knights augment that funding, which enables TSW to expand existing work experiences, such as with the Vail Depot Thrift Store, Resource Food Bank and making their own adobe bricks. Vail residents should know and appreciate that their donations to the Knights stay right here in the Vail community to help teach and develop the very students who will become our new adult citizens.
