Jutta Ambrositsch / Vienna & Thermenregion / Austria

In 2005 Jutta Ambrositsch decided to make a career change and left her job as a graphic designer behind to make traditionally inspired from old vine parcels in Vienna. Vienna is particularly famous for its historic field blends or ‘Gemischter Satz’ where a number of diferent varieties are planted, harvested and fermented together. Most of Jutta’s wines are blends or field blends inspired by this Viennese tradition, and her goal is to remain true to her , which is why she is largely focused on single bottlings. In 2013 Jutta took over some additional old vine parcels planted in the fossil limestone soils of Gumpoldskirchen, a historic growing village in the neighbouring Thermenregion appellation.

Jutta is a hands of winemaker, using only native yeasts and keeping cellar intervention to a minimum. She is dedicated to vinifying wines that speak for themselves and express local tradition and terroir. All of her wines are fermented and aged in stainless steel to emphasise purity of fruit and keep the wines energetic and fresh.

Himmelfahrt 2015 (12% alc.)

This wine comes from vines grown around the village of Gumpoldskirchen, where the calcerous soils are well known for producing top quality white wines. The grape varieties that go into this blend are Welschriesling, Neuburger, Grüner Veltliner, and the rare Rotgipfler and Zierfandler - aromatic white varieties native to the Thermenregion. Some of the grapes are destemmed, and some undergo whole bunch fermentation. All the fruit is spontaneously fermented in stainless steel and then aged for 5 months in stainless steel before bottling.

Satellit 2015 (13% alc.)

This traditional Viennese field blend (Gemischter Satz) is made from Grüner Veltliner, , and . The grapes come from Jutta’s first ‘satellite’ vineyard - a parcel situated on the famous Bisamberg site just outside the 19th district of Vienna. The 25 year old vineyard sits on loess soils just north of the Danube river in the village of Stammersdorfer. Jutta first bought a Grüner Veltliner plot here in 2012, and in 2014 acquired additional Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and Chardonnay vines. In 2015 Jutta decided to co-ferment the four grape varieties, making her first Satellit ’Gemischter Satz’. Fermented in stainless steel tanks.

Späte Himmelfarht 2014 (12% alc.)

This late “späte” Himmelfarht is made from Rotgipfler and Zierfandler - two rarely seen aromatic grape varieties native to the Thermenregion. Fermented in steel tanks. Sieveringer Ringelspiel 2015 (12% alc.)

Glockenturm 2015 (13% alc.)

This field blend comes from 45 year old vines planted on a gravelly eastern slope in the Mukenthal vineyard near the Viennese district of Grinzing. This site is afected by the cooling winds coming in from the Viennese woodlands, which help retain acidity and freshness. The Glockenturm contains 10 varieties that were harvested and fermented together, including Grüner Veltliner, Sylvaner, Riesling and Neuburger.

Rosengartel Riesling 2015 (12.5% alc.)

Made from 100% Riesling. The Rosengartel parcel is part of one of Vienna’s finest , the Nussberg. This south facing hillside has largely calcareous soils, combined with clay, sand and loam. The influences of the Danube river and the nearby woods create the perfect conditions for ripening Riesling. Jutta refers to this plot as the ‘filet cut’ of Viennese vineyards. The grapes are often hand harvested in two rounds to ensure that only the best quality grapes at optimal ripeness are selected. Some of the fruit is destemmed before the wine undergoes spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel. It is then aged for 6 months in stainless steel before bottling.

Wiener Rakete 2016 (11% alc.)

Zweigelt, St Laurent, Blauburger, and . The grapes come from the Kahlenberg vineyard which is comprised of compressed sandstone. This is another field blend, so all 4 grape varieties were co- fermented in stainless steel. A light and bracing that should be served chilled.
