Shown through our taste. UK Focus: On-trade, independent. Heimann Kadarka 2017 is available at The Wine Society. About the winery: the story of the Swabians: After the end of the Ottoman occupation of Hungary in the 18th century Swabian farmers were encouraged by royal incentives to settle down in the de- populated regions. They brought along their advanced wine producing culture and entrepreneurial, hard-working spirit. They planted vine on the abandoned hillsides and revitalized trade. The Heimanns belonged to the “lower street Swabians” in Szekszárd and were one of the enterprising and hard-work- ing farmer families. The Szekszárd appellation covers the easternmost stretches of the Transdanubian Hills. The thick loess soil of the slopes produces round wines with elegant, fruity aromas. The Mediterranean influence makes the autumns warm and sunny enabling us to harvest at optimal ripeness. The family believes that the future of our estate lies with local varieties, their commitment is reflected in the structure of their new plantings, viticultural experiments and wines are farmed on an organic way. Ferenc Heimann on returning from the war, handed over the management of the family estate to his son, who was instrumental in the implementation of the first large scale cordon-trained vine plantings, the establishment of the local cooperative for vine crofts and also the founding of the local winery Aliscavin. Zoltán) and his wife, Ágnes have left their respective careers as successful economists to return to viticulture and winemaking. Since 1990 they have reorganised the family estate. www.heimann.hu 6 Zoltán Jr. studied viticulture and enology in Geisenheim, Montpellier, Bordeaux and Udine. After 6 years of studies, he is now taking over the control over viticulture and winemaking responsibilities. The wine region of Szekszárd, known mostly for its famous Kadarka red wine, has been noted for its wine culture since Roman times and became one of the main centres of Hungarian red wine production in the 15th century. As the climate of the sunny wine region is rather balanced, excellent red grapes can grow on the mostly loess lands. Szekszárd reds are known for their velvety texture, and often show a lot of elegance. Szekszárd, along with Eger, is also one of the two regions that produce the famous Hungarian Bikavér. 1. Vineyard areas and areas under vine by grape variety Austrian Wine statistics report 1.2 Vineyard areas and areas under vine by grape variety 2 The data in this section is based on the 2015 Survey of Area under Vine, as well as feedback from the wine-producing federal states of Niederösterreich (Lower Austria), Burgenland, Steiermark (Styria) and Wien (Vienna). The main source of data for the 2015 Survey of Area under Vine was the Wein-ONLINE system operated by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management (BMNT). Data from the remaining federal states was collected by means of a questionnaire (primary data collection). Information relating to the (approved) nurseries was provided by the Burgenland and Lower Austrian Chambers of Agriculture and the Styrian state government (Agricultural Research Centre). According to the 2015 Survey of Area under Vine, Austria’s vineyards occupied 45,574 hectares. The planted vineyard area was 45,439 ha, which corresponds to 94 ha less (or a 0.2% decrease) in comparison to the 2009 Survey of Area under Vine. The long-running trend that suggested a shift away from white wine and towards red was quashed by the 2015 Survey of Area under Vine. While the white wine vineyard area increased by 2.3% to 30,502 ha compared to 2009, the red wine area decreased by 4.9% to 14,937 ha. Figure 1 shows the evolution of Austrian viticulture after the Second World War. The largest area under vine was recorded in 1980 at 59,432 ha. From 1980 onwards, the white wine vineyard area has continuously decreased, while the red wine vineyard area has expanded.

  • The History of Viticulture and Viniculture in Eger
Acta Acad. Paed. Agriensis, Sectio Pericemonologica XXXV (2008) 47–52 The history of viticulture and viniculture in Eger Csaba Csutorás and László Rácz Eszterházy Károly College Abstract: Az egri sz ĘlĘ- és borkultúra története. A cikk a sok évszázados egri borkultúra történetének rövid összefoglalását adja. Ismerteti a máig legis- mertebb, emblematikus itteni borfajta, az egri bikavér nevének eredetét és min Ę- ségének alakulását a kezdetekt Ęl máig. A borvidék viharos története magában foglalja a török id Ęk alatti hosszú tetszhalott állapotot, majd az újjáéledést, a diktatúra alatti hanyatlást és a rendszerváltás utáni megújulás, a magas igény Ħ, min Ęségi borkultúra id Ęszakát. „Eger is the town of grapes and wine” – that is what can be read when ap- proaching the town from the direction of Budapest. The town of historical past, baroque monuments is famous for not only its fortress, churches, medicinal thermal bath, but also for its wines, mostly Egri Bikavér (Bull’s Blood of Eger) as a result of its inhabitants’ conscious, industrious activity. The one thousand year old town – a bishop’s centre established by St. Stephen, the first Hungarian king in 1004 – has always been connected to grape growing to some extent and way. Although during the ninety-year long Turkish occupation (from Oct. 1596 to Dec. 1687) the region declined a lot mostly due to the emigration of the inha- bitants, lack of industrious hands in the Middle ages Eger and its surroundings mostly produced white wine. Since the 18th century it has been unambiguous that the main activity of Eger has become grape growing.

  • Wine of the Hungarian Parliament 2019 Wine of the Hungarian Parliament 2019 Dear Reader
Wine of the Hungarian Parliament 2019 Wine of the Hungarian Parliament 2019 Dear Reader, Three years ago, with the intention of creating a tradition, we announced the wine tasting event we named The Wine of the Hungarian Parliament. We did this in order to encourage guests who attend official National Assembly events at the House of Parliament - this historical site of Hungarian legislation - to learn more about the finest vintages of historical Hungarian wine regions and winemakers, and thus take our good reputation home with them all over the world. Even though the saying goes, “good wine needs no bush”, we know that in times of ever new and developing technical innovation becoming part of our everyday lives, quality assurance is gaining an even more important role. Only products that comply with the increasing rigour of quality requirements can be successful in the long run. In addition to the Hungarian legislation providing a legal environment to promote quality winemaking, it is the goal of our wine tasting event to stimulate high-standards in the Hungarian wine trade, to consolidate the good reputation of and provide further opportunities for those who love wine. The previous three years have proved that this initiative can withstand the test of time: this year, we have received a record 113 applications from wineries from all over the Carpathian Basin. Noblesse oblige. May our winners serve as representatives and advertisers of centuries-old Hungarian viticulture, its quality and spirit, in Hungary and beyond. László Kövér Wine of the Hungarian Parliament 2019 This year the Speaker of the National Assembly announced the third in the series of competitions entitled the Wine of the Hungarian Parliament.

  • Scientific Approach to the Strategy of the Vine & Wine
SCIENTIFIC APPROACH TO THE STRATEGY OF THE VINE & WINE SECTOR WITH SPECIAL REGARD TO THE MÁTRAALJA WINE REGION Dr. MAGDA, SÁNDOR - Dr. GERGELY, SÁNDOR SUMMARY The essential objects of the present study are the description of the strategic aspects of the vine & wine sector and the detailed analysis of the Mátraalja wine region (MWR), which is Hungary s largest mountain-slope wine growing area. A questionnaire assessment served as a basis for the study, within the framework of which the managers of MWR wine confraternities were asked questions about the parameters of their respective wine confraternities, and their opinions of the present situation of the latter, along with the possibilities of de veloping them. Further issues examined were: the required development of infrastructure, including the inadequate wine-processing, storage and bottling capacities, their qualitative and quantitative characteristics, and the possibilities of establishing them; the establishment of an advisory system to serve vine growers’ interests; the possibilities of establishing a regional plant protection and weather forecast system, and its prospective effects on profitability and environmental protection. Finally, the structure of grape varieties, the aspects of creating a potential leading wine and of its marketing, the establishment of competitive wineries, the implementation of a system of trade and logistics based on Internet, and the effective realisation of marketing coordinated by the MWR Wine Commercial House were examined. The present study does not contain all tables and charts compiled by the authors but draws conclusions from them. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS settlements of Heves county, the settlements Vác, Mogyoród, Rákosliget- The authors want to thank the Királydomb and Rózsahegy-Báróhegy Council and the leaders of the 25 MWR situated in Pest county, and Pásztó wine confraternities for giving assistance situated in Nógrád county.
