Beamesderfer and Dmitry Lajus conducted the assessment using CR v2.0 (1 October 2014), with modifications to the default assessment tree for salmon fisheries as defined by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC). The units of assessment and certification included Pink Salmon and Chum Salmon spawning in the Ozernaya, Koshegochek, Golygina, Opala, Kol, and Vorovskaya Rivers of the West Coast of Kamchatka, and Coho salmon spawning in the Kol River. Site visits was conducted at the Vityaz Avto Company Offices and other offices in Petropavlovsk- Kamchatsky, Russian Federation on 20-25 April 2015 and 30 March 30 – 1 April, 2016. The team met with the clients, with the client’s consultant, federal and state salmon scientific and management agencies, and key stakeholders. The team also reviewed extensive written documentation provided by the client and the fishery management system. All principle scores exceeded 80 but several performance indicators scored between 60 and 80. As a result, seven conditions were identified. On the basis of this assessment of the fisheries, the Assessment Team recommends that the fisheries be certified. Following this recommendation of the assessment team, and review by stakeholders and peer-reviewers, a determination is hereby made by MRAG Americas to certify the fisheries.     CHUKOTKA, KAMCHATKA AND 26 August 1999 MAGADAN (FAR NORTH-EASTERN RUSSIA): CRITICALLY ISOLATED COMMUNITIES appeal no. 05/99; 5 Month programme extension until October 15, 1999 situation report no. 5 period covered: 20 July - 25 August 1999 The Russian Far Northeast programme, launched on 8 February to assist 82,000 beneficiaries in the rural regions of Chukotka, Kamchatka, including Koryak okrug and Magadan, is in the final stages of implementation. The intended quantity of family food parcels was produced in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and Magadan, and distribution is ongoing in all four regions covered by the Appeal. Hygiene kits have also been procured for all the regions and have already been sent to Magadan for distribution. Adverse weather conditions are making air transport difficult and causing logistical constraints. The context The steady erosion of living standards and rise in unemployment associated with a decade of diffi- cult market transition and poor harvests in Russia has taken a high toll in terms of living conditions and brought with it economic inequality and heightened social instability which has been particu- larly devastating for the population of the Far North-eastern remote regions of Chukotka, Kamchatka, including Koryak okrug, and Magadan. Geographic isolation (air transport and dog sleds are the only ways to reach some remote polar areas for many months of the year) combbined with a harsh climate (with temperatures reaching -50 C during long winter months and +40 C in summer), poor infrastructure, a lack of economic diver- sity, the high cost of transport, the over-dependance on imports, and the loss of subsidies have all compounded the regions’ problems.

Kuzmin, and Andrei V. Ptashinsky Abstract: The results of obsidian provenance research on the Kamchatka Peninsula based on extensive study of the chemical composition of volcanic glasses from both ‘geological’ sources and archaeological sites are presented. At least 16 geochemical groups reflecting different sources of obsidian have been identified for Kamchatka using Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis. Seven sources of archaeological obsidian have been linked to specific geologic outcrops, with the distances between sites and obsidian sources up to 550km. At least seven geochemical groups based only on artefact analysis are also described. The use of multiple obsidian sources was a common pattern during the Palaeolithic, Neolithic, and Palaeometal periods of Kamchatkan prehistory. The multitude of animals inhabiting these seas is extremely varied. Of fish alone there are up to 800 species, among which some 200 are or can be regarded as exploitable species. Up to the present time the salmon and herring have. been of prevalent industrial importance in the Far East. The immense reserves of these fish, relative simplicity and high effectiveness of the fishing methods employed during the spawning period, simplicity of processing in- volved, excellence of quality of the finished product, all these factors appealed to industrial fishing, fish-proces- sing and fish-marketing organizations. As a result, the entire fishing industry of the Far East was until recen- tly, a passive industry --90% of the catch was obtained by means of stationary fishing implements or fishing cordage cast from the shore (such as seines and casting nets, etc.).

    WWF strongly supported the increase in fines for illegal fishing initiated by the Ministry of Agriculture. Public discussion concerning the Russian government’s draft decree ended on October 9th. The decree would set fines up to 20 times higher than current levels for some species. While we do not consider these measures to be an absolute remedy, the fine amounts will be significant enough to be noticed Sergey Rafanov, by poachers. Kamchatka Bering Sea Ecoregional Office However, poaching for fish isn’t only a Kamchatka problem. The WWF-Russia Kamchatka Office and its partners have valuable experience to share. In autumn, our colleagues from WWF-Russia Barents Sea Ecoregional Office came to the peninsula to learn about Kamchatka’s anti-poaching activity on the Bolshaya River. And now public inspectors will work on the Varzuga River in the Murmansk region. The operations of two mining companies in Kamchatka remain under strict examination within the framework of the Environmental Responsibility Rating and the gradation system introduced in 2017. The companies, however, did not improve their positions compared to the previous March 2017 rating. This result urges us to look for new opportunities to engage mining operators in improving the environmental aspect of their work in 2018. In Asia, the sockeye is the most abundant on the Kamchatka Peninsula in some years where ap- proximately 90-95 % of all the Asian sockeye is harvested in the watersheds of the Kamchatka and Ozernaya rivers alone. This study is a summary of long-term observations on the Asian sockeye, and is based on the results of the author's 20 years of research. He examines the biological charac- teristics of 38 local sockeye populations (from Iturup Is. to Eastern Chukotka). Long-term data was used to analyze the interannual variability in the growth of juvenile sockeye of the Kamchatka and Ozernaya rivers. Questions concerning the structural analysis of the scales in juveniles and spawn- ers of the sockeye are discussed in detail for the purpose of standardizing the age-determination procedure. Data on the feeding behaviour of juvenile sockeye in the watersheds of the Kamchatka and Ozernaya rivers are presented, and questions concerning the food competition of fish in the Kamchatka River watershed are discussed.
