Background: Previous study and publication of the inscription This article concerns an inscription in KharoÒ†hi script and Gandhari language on the pedestal of a Gandharan relief sculpture which has been interpreted as referring to Amitabha and Avalokitesvara, and thus as hav- ing an important bearing on the issue of the origins of the Mahayana. The sculpture in question (fig. 1) has had a rather complicated history. According to Brough (1982: 65), it was first seen in Taxila in August 1961 by Professor Charles Kieffer, from whom Brough obtained the photograph on which his edition of the inscription was based. Brough reported that “[o]n his [Kieffer’s] return to Taxila a month later, the sculpture had dis- appeared, and no information about its whereabouts was forthcoming.” Later on, however, it resurfaced as part of the collection of Dr. -

In 628 CE, Brahmagupta describes in detail rules of operations with integers | positive, negative and zero | and thus, in effect, imparts a ring structure on integers with zero as the additive identity. The various Sanskrit names for zero include kha, ´s¯unya, p¯urn. a. There was an awareness about the perils of zero and yet ancient Indian mathematicians not only embraced zero as an integer but allowed it to participate in all four arithmetic operations, including as a divisor in a division. But division by zero is strictly forbidden in the present edifice of mathematics. Consequently, verses from ancient stalwarts like Brahmagupta and Bh¯askar¯ac¯arya referring to numbers with \zero in the denominator" shock the modern reader. Certain examples in the B¯ıjagan. ita (1150 CE) of Bh¯askar¯ac¯arya appear as absurd nonsense. But then there was a time when square roots of negative numbers were considered non- existent and forbidden; even the validity of subtracting a bigger number from a smaller number (i.e., the existence of negative numbers) took a long time to gain universal acceptance. Is it not possible that we too have confined ourselves to a certain safe convention regarding the zero and that there could be other approaches where the ideas of Brahmagupta and Bh¯askar¯ac¯arya, and even the examples of Bh¯askar¯ac¯arya, will appear not only valid but even natural? Enterprising modern mathematicians have created elaborate legal (or technical) machinery to overcome the limitations imposed by the prohibition against use of zero in the denominator. -

What is the International Phonetic Alphabet? The aim of the International Phonetic Association is to promote the scientific study of phonetics and the various practical applications of that science. For both these it is necessary to have a consistent way of representing the sounds of language in written form. From its foundation in 1886 the Association has been concerned to develop a system of notation which would be convenient to use, but comprehensive enough to cope with the wide variety of sounds found in the languages of the world; and to encourage the use of thjs notation as widely as possible among those concerned with language. The system is generally known as the International Phonetic Alphabet. Both the Association and its Alphabet are widely referred to by the abbreviation IPA, but here 'IPA' will be used only for the Alphabet. The IPA is based on the Roman alphabet, which has the advantage of being widely familiar, but also includes letters and additional symbols from a variety of other sources. These additions are necessary because the variety of sounds in languages is much greater than the number of letters in the Roman alphabet. The use of sequences of phonetic symbols to represent speech is known as transcription. The IPA can be used for many different purposes. For instance, it can be used as a way to show pronunciation in a dictionary, to record a language in linguistic fieldwork, to form the basis of a writing system for a language, or to annotate acoustic and other displays in the analysis of speech. -

Those addressed in this paper include specifically Bengali, Devanagari, Gujarati, Gurmukhi, Kannada, Malayalam, Oriya, Tamil, and Telugu. I have used XHTML encoded in UTF-8 for the base version of this paper. Most of the XHTML file can be viewed if you are running Windows XP with all associated Indic font and rendering support, and the Arial Unicode MS font. For examples that require complex rendering in scripts not yet supported by this configuration, such as Bengali, Oriya, and Malayalam, I have used non- Unicode fonts supplied with Gamma's Unitype. To view all fonts as intended without the above you can view the PDF file whose URL is given above. Although the Indic scripts are often described as similar, there is a large amount of variation at the detailed implementation level. To provide a detailed account of how each Indic script implements particular features on a letter by letter basis would require too much time and space for the task at hand. Nevertheless, despite the detail variations, the basic mechanisms are to a large extent the same, and at the general level there is a great deal of similarity between these scripts. It is certainly possible to structure a discussion of the relevant features along the same lines for each of the scripts in the set. -
The Gurmukhi Astrolabe of the Maharaja of Patiala
Indian Journal of History of Science, 47.1 (2012) 63-92 THE GURMUKHI ASTROLABE OF THE MAHARAJA OF PATIALA SREERAMULA RAJESWARA SARMA* (Received 14 August 2011; revised 23 January 2012) Even though the telescope was widely in use in India, the production of naked eye observational instruments continued throughout the nineteenth century. In Punjab, in particular, several instrument makers produced astrolabes, celestial globes and other instruments of observation, some inscribed in Sanskrit, some in Persian and yet some others in English. A new feature was the production of instruments with legends in Punjabi language and Gurmukhi script. Three such instruments are known so far. One of these is a splendid astrolabe produced for the Maharaja of Patiala in 1850. This paper offers a full technical description of this Gurmukhi astrolabe and discusses the geographical and astrological data engraved on it. Attention is drawn to the similarities and differences between this astrolabe and the other astrolabes produced in India. ENCOUNTERING THE GODDESS IN INDIA Religion 220 Dr. Joel R. Smith Spring, 2012 Skidmore College An introduction to the Hindu religious culture of India through a study of major Hindu goddesses. The vision (darsan) of and devotion (bhakti) to the feminine divine image will be explored in terms of both the Goddess worshipped in her own right independently of any male god, and goddesses worshipped as the spouse or consort of a male god. An interdisciplinary approach will explore the religious meaning of the Hindu goddess in literature, painting, poetry, ritual, and sculpture. Learning Goals: (1) Learn about the meaning of the major Hindu Goddesses of India: their history, scriptures, myths, rituals, iconography, and symbolism. (2) Place the Goddesses and devotion to them in the context of other kinds of Hindu religious movements. (3) Learn about the culture of India through the study of Hindu Goddesses. (4) Develop critical concepts and methodologies for the study of religions in India and elsewhere. (5) Practice subtle reading, writing, and analytical skills, including critical evaluation, by discussing readings in class and by writing essays about them. Hidden Realms and Pure Abodes: Central Asian Buddhism as Frontier Religion in the Literature of India, Nepal, and Tibet Ronald M. Davidson Fairfield University The notable romantic interest in Silk Route studies in the last hundred years has spread far beyond the walls of academe, and is especially observed in the excessive world of journalism. In Japan, NHK (Japan Broadcasting Corporation) has produced a series of films whose images are extraordinary while their content remains superficial. The American Na- tional Geographical Society has followed suit in their own way, with some curious articles written by journalists and photographers. With the 2001 conflict in Afghanistan, American undergraduates have also begun to perceive Central Asia as a place of interest and excitement, an assessment that will not necessarily pay dividends in the support of serious scholar- ship. While Indian and Arab academic commentators on popular Western cultural movements want to read the lurid hand of Orientalism into such responses, I believe something more interesting is actually happening. Over the course of the past decade, I have often been struck by statements in medieval Buddhist literature from India, Nepal, and Tibet, statements that depict areas of Central Asia and the Silk Route in similarly exotic tones. Whether it is a land of secret knowledge or mystery, of danger and romance, or a land of opportunity and spirituality, the willingness of Indians, Nepalese, and Tibetans to entertain and accept fabulous descrip- tions of the domains wherein silk commerce and Buddhism existed for approximately a millennium is an interesting fact. More to the point, for the Buddhist traditions found in classical and medieval India and Tibet, there has been no area comparable to Central Asia for its combination of intellec- tual, ritual, mythic, and social impact. -
