1 Hazrat Pir-o-Murshid Vilayat Inayat Khan 1916 - 2004 Pir Vilayat held his last retreat at christmas 2003 in Bad Überkingen/Germany. Despite his age of 87 he was full of energy and spiritual power which filled the hall. He mostly impressed by his directness, his sincerity. He was completely authentic. No shadow to hide, no doubts to suppress. During his long life - 19 June 1916 to 17 June 2004 - he went through pain, rejection and criticism. Nevertheless he stayed open. He himself says: "Anyone volunteering to embody the archetype representing people's higher self will have to choose between artfully concealing one's shadow and, when discovered, justifying it hypocritically, or alternatively, exposing oneself to scrutiny and criticism by all. Should one have the honesty and courage to confront one's shortcomings, one will better understand people's problems through seeing oneself in others and others in oneself, thus affording real help to those who also need to transmute their shadow elements." (Elixir 1/05, p. 35) And Pir Zia adds about his father: "He wanted to stimulate what was real and true in each person." (Heart & Wings Memorial Issue 2004, p. 15) Shortly after, at the end of January 2004, he had a stroke. And on 17 June 2004 Pir Vilayat died at Fazal Manzil which is the residence of the familiy Khan in Suresnes/Paris. Pir Zia tells us: "We all stood and said prayers and held him in our hearts, and his breathing changed and then stopped, his breath left the body and filled the room. -

In the Chishti lineage through Hazrat Pir-o-Murshid Inayat Khan, there are nine Pirs who are buried in Delhi, and many more whose lives were entwined with Delhi. I have compiled short biographies on these Pirs, and a few others, so that we may have a glimpse into their lives, as a doorway into “meeting” them in the eternal realm of the heart, insha’allah. With permission from the authors, to whom I am deeply grateful to for their work on this subject, I compiled this information primarily from three books: Pir Zia Inayat Khan, The “Silsila-i Sufian”: From Khwaja Mu’in al-Din Chishti to Sayyid Abu Hashim Madani, published in A Pearl in Wine Sadia Dehlvi, Sufism, The Heart of Islam, and The Sufi Courtyard, Dargahs of Delhi For those interested in further study, I highly recommend their books – I have taken only small excerpts from their material for use in this document. -

Een ‘gedroomde’ toekomst voor de Universel ` Datum: 13 december 2020 Inleiding Op 23 september 2020 hield het bestuur van Stichting Murad Hassil een brainstorm over de toekomst van de Universel. Al tientallen jaren was er voor onderhoud van het gebouw en omgeving elk jaar weer een tekort. Degene die er steeds weer persoonlijk voor zorgde dat het elke keer weer goed kwam, is niet meer. Wij denken in liefde aan hem terug. Maar er is nu wel dringend behoefte aan een nieuwe aanpak –een nieuw plan, een nieuwe visie met oplossingen. Niet alleen financieel, ook inhoudelijk. Deze notitie is voortgekomen uit een brainstormsessie van het bestuur. Als inleiding keerden we in gedachten terug naar de jaren ’20 van de vorige eeuw toen Inayat Khan symbolisch de eerste steen plaatste voor ‘zijn’ Universel. Er zijn foto’s van bewaard. Inayat Khan en zijn leerlingen tijdens een zomerschool. “It will shake the World” waren zijn woorden bij die gelegenheid. De Universel kwam 45 jaar later in Katwijk,en dat is nu 50 jaar geleden. Het zijn 50 bewogen jaren geweest, maar de Universel heeft de wereld niet echt geschokt. Het is de ambitie van het bestuur de komende jaren dat aan te pakken. Waar zou de Universel over 20 of 30 jaar in de wereld moeten ‘staan’ om haar ambitie waar te maken? Wat willen we met onderwerpen als klimaatverandering en de teloorgang van biodiversiteit? Wat zou onze rol moeten zijn? De Universel is van ons allemaal De International Sufi Movement is één van de vijf groeperingen die vanuit de Boodschap van Inayat Khan zijn ontstaan. -

Biography India in 1882 Towards the middle of the latter half of the 19th century, a desire for religious and social reform was awakening in India among Hindus and Moslims alike. Centuries earlier, Shankaracharya * had turned the tide of religious feeling towards a greater spirituality. Both Nanak *, the great Guru * of the Sikhs *, and Kabir *, the poet, had created and left in the land a living spirit of tolerance in religion and of spiritual purity. A fresh fire was given to religious life by the great sages Dadu * and Sundar *. More recently the religious association Arya Samaj * had been founded by Dayananda Saraswati *, the religious reform of Swami Narayan * had been made, Devendranath Tagore * had lighted a new flame of religion in Brahmo Samj *. Then Mirza Ghulam Hussein Qadiani [The full name is Mirza Ghulam Hussein Ahmad Qadiani] had set on foot the Ahmadia Movement *, the Christian missionaries were endeavouring to propagate Christianity and the Theosophical Society * had established itself as The Hindu College at Benares. The dark clouds that had hung over the land in the years following the Mutiny *, were breaking. on the one hand Sir Sayyed Ahmad * was working to induce the Moslims to make the best of existing conditions, in particular by the foundation of Aligarh College * and to arouse in the Moslim youth a spirit of enterprise, energy and self-dependence and on the other hand the British Government was setting to work at reform in law, education and administration. -

The Case of American Sufi Movements1
HYBRIDIDENTITY FORMATIONS IN MUSLIMAMERICA Hybrid Identity Formations in Muslim America: The Case of American Sufi Movements’ Marcia Hermansen Loyola University Chicago, Illinois he minimal attention given to Sufi movements in much previous scholarship on Muslims in America’ is indicative of the assumption T that these movements were marginal to the concerns of most Muslims living in the United States and insignificant in terms of their impact on American culture and institution^.^ At the same time, organizations and publications sponsored by the American Muslim community have largely ignored S~fism.~One academic study called Sufis “the hidden Muslims” of America since they had been largely overlooked by the few sociological studies of American Muslim communities, and because, in many cases, adherents do not attend mosques or belong to mainstream Islamic organi- zations .5 The following study contends that these movements are worthy of attention and that their impact in terms of both the Muslim community and American culture is significant and increasing. The literary output of American Sufi movements is by now so vast that it would require a volume rather than an essay to adequately present the history and doctrines of each of the groups in detail. I therefore aim to provide an overview of major groups, their history and their activities. There is a range of movements that can be considered Sufi-oriented, or that have been influenced to various degrees by the tradition of Islamic mysticism. It is not within the scope of this paper to evaluate the authentici- ty of any movement or individual. However, if the standard for terming a movement “Sufi”were to mean the practice of Islamic law, not all of these movements would be included. -

LEADERSHIP VISIONING GATHERING OF THE INAYATI ORDER REPORT APRIL 21 – 24, 2016 AT THE ABODE OF THE MESSAGE, NEW LEBANON, NEW YORK “I wish to say a few words on the subject of our efforts in constructing something. We have come together, brought together by destiny in friendship, in sympathy, in love, and this must have a special meaning. And that special meaning is that we are constructing something, we are building something in the air. And this building is not a building for a certain time. This building is built for centuries to come. And how is it designed, and how is it to be constructed? It is designed by the hand of God, and it is to be constructed by our thoughts of harmony, of love, of beauty. It is our thoughts and our feelings which will serve in this temple as stones and bricks and tiles, and it is our feelings which will hold this temple for centuries to come.” Hazrat Inayat Khan, July 21st, 1925, The Message Papers – about the Universel INTRODUCTION This report summarizes the process and outcomes from the four-day meeting of leaders of the Inayati Order in North America, held April 21-24, 2016 at the Abode of the Message in New Lebanon, New York. The meeting was the second of two with the first one held in Suresnes, France, January 2016. This report offers a partial view of the meeting (hopefully giving a flavor of what happened) and contains seven appendices that give detailed information from the many post-it notes that were collected over the four days! Zaynab Fitzpatrick took detailed notes of the meeting and they are presented in a separate document.
