Garcia vi SIETE LENGUAS: THE RHETORICAL HISTORY OF DOLORES HUERTA AND THE RISE OF CHICANA RHETORIC by CHRISTINE BEAGLE B.A., English Language and Literature, Angelo State University, 2005 M.A., English Language and Literature, Angelo State University, 2008 Ph.D., English, University of New Mexico, 2015 ABSTRACT This dissertation is both a history of Chicana Rhetoric in the North American polis and a perspectival analysis of three key texts by Chicana labor right’s activist and vice president of the United Farm Workers union, Dolores Huerta. The dissertation covers the years between the Mexican Revolution and the Mexican American Generation (1910s- 1950s) and the Chicano Civil Rights Years to the present day (1960s-2010s) to trace the legacy of Chicana Rhetoric exemplified in the rhetorical career of Dolores Huerta. Huerta’s role as rhetor lies in the analyses of three key texts, so as to explore Chicana Rhetoric in-depth through the lenses of the media, the scholarly, and the personal. I argue that Chicana Rhetoric is representative social activist rhetoric and of current intersections in social, political, racial, and gender rhetorics, and that Dolores Huerta embodies these intersections. This dissertation seeks to as a rhetor and activist as the center of her own narrative and public life, uncoupling her from an auxiliary and secondary role in the grand Garcia vii narrative of Chicano history and Chicano rhetoric. Huerta illustrates the rhetorical life of an engaged, autonomous, and efficacious Chicana rhetor.     5 La Nueva Chicana: Women and the Movement Rise Up! To Woman Rise up! Rise up to life, to activity, to the beauty of truly living; but rise up radiant and powerful, beautiful with qualities, splendid with virtues, strong with energies.1 1 HIS poem was written not during the heyday of the Chicano Movement, but in 1910 by Tejana socialist labor leader and politi- cal activist Sara Estela Ramirez.2 She would not live to participate in El Primer Congreso Mexicanista held the following year. Ram- irez's ideas, however, would resonate in the words of her com- paneras. Composed of South Texas residents, this Congreso was the first civil rights assembly among Spanish-speaking people in the United States. With delegates representing community organi- zations and interests from both sides of the border, its platform ad- dressed discrimination, land loss, and lynching. Women delegates, such as Jovita Idar, Soldedad Pefia, and Hortensia Moncaya, spoke to the concerns of Tejanos and Mexicanos. Regarding education, Soledad Pena referred to "our duty ... to educate woman; to in- struct her and to ... give her due respect." Out of this congress arose a women's organization, Liga Femenil Mexicanista, and for a short period two sisters Andrea and Teresa Villareal published a newspaper, La Mujer Moderna.3 As the poem shows, strands of feminist ideology or incipient feminist ideology can be located at various junctures in the history Copyright © 2008. This course begins with the 1960s Chicano civil rights era struggles for social justice to present day.     CONSTRUCTING THE CAUSE: THE ROLE OF THIRD-PARTY FUNDERS IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF MEXICAN AMERICAN INTEREST GROUP ADVOCACY by Devin Fernandes A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Political Science JOHNS HOPKINS UNIVERSITY © Devin Fernandes 2018 All rights reserved ABSTRACT For the last 25 years, scholars have raised alarms over the disappearance of local civic membership organizations since the 1960s and a concomitant explosion of third-party-funded, staff-dominated, professional advocacy organizations. This change is said to contribute to long- term declines in civic and political participation, particularly among minorities and low income Americans, and by extension, diminished electoral fortunes of the Democratic Party. Rather than mobilize mass publics and encourage their political participation, the new, largely progressive advocacy groups finance themselves independently through foundation grant money and do most of their work in Washington where they seek behind the scenes influence with unelected branches of government. However, in seeking to understand this transition “from membership to advocacy,” most current scholarship focuses on the socio-political factors that made it possible. We have little understanding of the internal dynamics sustaining individual organizations themselves to account for why outside-funded groups are able to emerge and thrive or the ways in which dependence on external subsidies alters their operating incentives. To address this hole in the literature, the dissertation engages in a theory-building effort through a case study analysis of the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF), founded in 1968. Drawing on archival materials from MALDEF and its primary benefactor, the Ford Foundation, the dissertation opens the black box of internal decision-making to understand in real time how resource dependence on non-beneficiaries shaped the maintenance calculus of its leaders and in turn, group behavior.

Students will: For ELL class, two 60 minute class periods are recommended. Examine the concept of intersectionality as it applies to social movements. Research how the struggles of the social movements in Dolores are related to one another. Create an argument for the power of social justice movements working together. In this lesson, students will examine the concept of intersectionality as it applies to building inclusive social groups and movements. Intersectionality refers to how our multiple identities change how we experience the world, and what that means as we work to build inclusive schools, organizations, workplaces and communities. Additional strategies for supporting ELL learners are included throughout this lesson. VOCABULARY: Key Terms for the lesson on intersectionality that are relevant to Dolores Huerta’s story and work. ● Feminism - the belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities ● Inclusive- open to everyone, not limited to certain people ● Perspective- a way of thinking about and understanding something ● Social conscience - the part of the mind that makes you aware of your actions in relation to the problems and injustices of society ● Social movement- (in the context of this lesson) a series of organized activities in which many people work together to do or achieve something ELL Strategy: Have students complete a Word Knowledge Continuum (Appendix A) to begin increasing student fluency and understanding of these terms used in Dolores.

Lincoln: University of Nebraska Press, 2015. 286 pp. $45 hardcover (ISBN 978-0-8032-5475-6) Reviewed by Jessie Clark University of Nevada, Reno In Gendering Radicalism, Beth Slutsky produces an important portrait of radical political organizing in twentieth-century America through the stories of three women who served in successive leadership positions for the Communist party in California from 1919 through 1992: Charlotte Anita Whitney, Dorothy Ray Healey, and Kendra Claire Harris Alexander. Working and organizing within different but overlapping epochs of radical reform movements in America—the Bolshevik Revolution (Witney), the U.S. labor movement (Healey), and the Cold War and Civil Rights Movement (Alexander)—their stories reflect the morphology of the Communist Party as it wrestled with defining debates over race, gender, and class in Ameri- ca. To that end, this book also reflects the unique contributions of each of these women to the Party, and the inevitable tensions around the position of women in the Party. Finally, this book explores the role of California in centering and shaping the character of politics in America. For its tolerance toward more radical political philosophies, California then and now stirred the winds to pull American politics leftward. In this regard, this story of three women in California is not one that unfolds in isolation to other lives involved in and touched by the Communist Party across America. Whitney, Healey, and Alexander’s political visions, while mediated in the American West, were ultimately informed by and expressed a shared American expe- rience of economic disenfranchisement, racism, and sexism.
