Alexandro “Salo” Escamilla, tlazocamati, I will never forget our M.E.Ch.A. days together at the University of Arizona in planning the creation of MAS, nor the protest march where you guided and protected hundreds of middle school Chicanitas/os from Wakefield who had walked out to the district headquarters. My strong, beautiful and wise brother, Patrick Valencia McKenna, you lit the spark for the entire Tucson community while a Mechista at Tucson High School demanding Chicana/o Studies and leading the high school walkouts in the 1990s inspiring us all; moreover, you introduced so many of us to the temezcalli and the traditional ways in Pascua Yaqui Village, I am forever thankful for you being real and for your Carnalismo. My loving hermana Sally Rusk, gracias for teaching me how to teach Chicana/o Studies and for always being there for me. As a participant and product of el movimiento, you exemplify what we all need to strive for, and that is to serve as defenders of el pueblo Chicana/o.     FACEBOOK, YOUTH AND POLITICAL ACTION: A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF ZIMBABWE AND SOUTH AFRICA A thesis submitted in fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY of SCHOOL OF JOURNALISM AND MEDIA STUDIES, RHODES UNIVERSITY by Admire Mare September 2015 ABSTRACT This comparative multi-sited study examines how, why and when politically engaged youths in distinctive national and social movement contexts use Facebook to facilitate political activism. As part of the research objectives, this study is concerned with investigating how and why youth activists in Zimbabwe and South Africa use the popular corporate social network site for political purposes. The study explores the discursive interactions and micro- politics of participation which plays out on selected Facebook groups and pages. It also examines the extent to which the selected Facebook pages and groups can be considered as alternative spaces for political activism. It also documents and analyses the various kinds of political discourses (described here as digital hidden transcripts) which are circulated by Zimbabwean and South African youth activists on Facebook fan pages and groups. Methodologically, this study adopts a predominantly qualitative research design although it also draws on quantitative data in terms of levels of interaction on Facebook groups and pages. Consequently, this study engages in data triangulation which allows me to make sense of how and why politically engaged youths from a range of six social movements in Zimbabwe and South Africa use Facebook for political action. In terms of data collection techniques, the study deploys social media ethnography (online participant observation), qualitative content analysis and in-depth interviews.

  • Chicana Brown Berets in East Los Angeles, 1967-1970
    Essays “Revolutionary Sisters”: Women’s Solidarity and Collective Identification among Chicana Brown Berets in East Los Angeles, 1967-1970 Dionne Espinoza ABSTRACT:I examine women’s participation in the East Los Angeles chapter of the Brown Berets in order to unpack the dynamics ofwomen’s inclusion and exclusion in an organization proclaiming a commitment to liberatory social change. I argue that the organization’s structure and ideology, which originally appeared to support participatory democracy- albeit in tension withparamilitary procedures and selfrepresentations- progressively devolved into the segregation and subordination of women participants. This structuring of gender inequality, and the self- representations and behaviors that supported it, created the conditions for womenBerets to recognize each other as hermanas en la lucha who could organize on their own terms. Chicana Brown Berets’ gender consciousness and woman-identified solidarity enabled them to break with the organization and develop a new political identity that implied a linked, but autonomous, relationship to the Chicano movement as well as a feminist reconstruction of la familia as based in women’s community. In late February 1970 a letter was sent to “Aron Mangancilla, Minister of Education for the Brown Berets,” explaining that the minister of correspondence and finance for the East Los Angeles chapter, Gloria Arellanes, had resigned. The letter stated, “There has been a great exclusion on behalf of the male segment and failure of the ministers to communicate with us, among many, many other things.” It went on to de- clare that “ALL Brown Beret women” were leaving because they had been treated as “nothings, not as “Revolutionary Aztldn 26: 1 Spring 200 1 17 Espinoza sisters.”’ Signing the letter “Con Che!”, the authors implied that their leaving was a revolutionary act of self-determination.
