ARTHUR LOURIE, DISTINGUISHED DIPLOMAT, AT 75 The death occurred in Jerusalem on October 4. 1978, of former South African Arthur Lourie, who had been a distinguished member of the Israel Diplomatic Corps since the establishment of the State of Israel until hfS retirement. Arthur Lourie, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Lourie who were well-known Johannesburg active Zionists, was born in Johannesburg in 1903. A lawyer by profession, he graduated from the uni versities of Cambridge, England and Harvard, United States. From his earliest years. Arthur Lourie was deep ly interested and active in Zionist affairs and was chairman of the Johannesburg Zionist Society, an offshoot of the South African Zionist Organisation. In London, he served as political secretary of the Jewish Agency and personal secretary to Chaim Weizmann who regarded him as a very "bright y o u n g m a n " . In the United States during World War II, Arthur Lourie continued his involvement in Zionist mat ters, becoming secretary of the American Zionist Emergency Council.
