ARTHUR LOURIE, DISTINGUISHED DIPLOMAT, AT 75

The death occurred in Jerusalem on October 4. 1978, of former South African Arthur Lourie, who had been a distinguished member of the Israel Diplomatic Corps since the establishment of the State of Israel until hfS retirement. Arthur Lourie, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Lourie who were well-known Johannesburg active Zionists, was born in Johannesburg in 1903. A lawyer by profession, he graduated from the uni versities of Cambridge, England and Harvard, United States. From his earliest years. Arthur Lourie was deep ly interested and active in Zionist affairs and was chairman of the Johannesburg Zionist Society, an offshoot of the South African Zionist Organisation. In London, he served as political secretary of the Jewish Agency and personal secretary to Chaim Weizmann who regarded him as a very "bright y o u n g m a n " . In the United States during World War II, Arthur Lourie continued his involvement in Zionist mat ters, becoming secretary of the American Zionist Emergency Council. Dr. Josef Burg, Minister of Interior, was Guest Speaker at a banquet fallowing the consecration ceremony of Lodge Moledet in Tel Aviv on September 4. Dr. Burg brought a message of blessings and good wishes to the first Israeli Branch of the South African Jewish fraternal organisation, the Hebrew Order of David. The second Guest Speaker, newly-appointed South African Ambassador to Israel. Mr. D.S. Franklin, praised the Hebrew Order of David in South Africa and also the South African Jewish Community in the Republic for their generous support and assistance in many spheres of activity, in South Africa. The three hundred guests included members of the Order living in Israel, their wives and a one-hundred strong H.O.D. delegation from South Africa. Other speakers in cluded newly-installed President Archie Poliak; Vice-Presi dent Eddie Kroser; Grand President Bennie Asch and Grand Secretary Dave Wacks. An illuminated address was presented to H.O.D. Past Principal of the Senate. Monty Mann, now living in Israel and a co-founder of the Lodge. During November it is hoped that practices will have started in Haifa, Ra'anana and Rishon le-Zion. The Israel Hockey Association caters for men, women, boys and girls. On Oct. 21, the I.H.A. held their first friendly matches between the Hebrew University and Mac- cabi Tel Aviv, in Jerusalem. In the men's match, Tel Aviv Maccabi beat the Hebrew University, whose side was made up largely of Israelis, by 3 goals to 1. In the women's match, Maccabi Tel Aviv and the Hebrew University drew 1-1. The I.H.A. intend to start their first hockey league in November.
