ARTHUR LOURIE, DISTINGUISHED DIPLOMAT, AT 75 The death occurred in Jerusalem on October 4. 1978, of former South African Arthur Lourie, who had been a distinguished member of the Israel Diplomatic Corps since the establishment of the State of Israel until hfS retirement. Arthur Lourie, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Lourie who were well-known Johannesburg active Zionists, was born in Johannesburg in 1903. A lawyer by profession, he graduated from the uni versities of Cambridge, England and Harvard, United States. From his earliest years. Arthur Lourie was deep ly interested and active in Zionist affairs and was chairman of the Johannesburg Zionist Society, an offshoot of the South African Zionist Organisation. In London, he served as political secretary of the Jewish Agency and personal secretary to Chaim Weizmann who regarded him as a very "bright y o u n g m a n " . In the United States during World War II, Arthur Lourie continued his involvement in Zionist mat ters, becoming secretary of the American Zionist Emergency Council. What a bobby it has been….It has taken ME AROUND THE WORLD many times, and the 98% positivity towards the letter encourages me to continue, for how long I don’t know….??? It has become such a ‘humungous’ task, to sort through info each week, try and get the most interesting data out that Yidden would like to read, answer the hundreds of personal E-mails a year…..and try and keep everyone happy…. This is the 20th year of the ‘Stan The Good Shabbos Man’ newsletter, which started way back in 2000 when I left Stan & Pete Caterers….It has been a L-O-N-G journey to get here, having written soooooo much over the past 20 years….having passed milestones like the Barmitzvah year and the Chai year ….. When broken down it is a bit ‘Skrikky’….. over 1,000 weekly letters, with an average of 10 pages, which is +/- 10,000 pages, and when broken down into words, not even going there ….
