MJHS: Department of Physical Education

PHILOSOPHY The emphasis in physical education is in the areas of organic, neuromuscular, cognitive and social development. Organic development includes (physical fitness, endurance, strength, and flexibility). Neuromuscular development includes (agility, balance, hand/foot-eye coordination, efficiency of movement, and locomotor skills). Cognitive development includes (rules of the games, movement concepts, strategies, terminology, and written exams). Social development includes (sportsmanship, honesty, fairness, following rules and instructions, camaraderie, cooperative and competitive play, and socialization). Our program consists of a wide variety of activities and games to interest all students. Many of these activities can be played throughout one's adult life. Students will learn in an environment that promotes maximum participation, cooperation, challenge, success, self-esteem, and health and fitness practices designed to last for a lifetime. We believe that life skills are an important aspect of our program. The students strive to develop a high level of fitness, engage in sport activities, and may participate in risk-taking activities as a medium in developing these life skills. The program is developmentally progressive through sixth, seventh and eighth grade. When our students reach the end of eighth grade at Martinez, they will have met the Exit Outcomes of the physical education department. We are concerned with life skills and assess student successes through various means of evaluation. We strive to make our classes as fun as possible. We sincerely hope their experience in MJHS PE is a positive and inspirational one which will instill the importance of “Fitness Through Life.” Items to Remember * My physical Education teacher's name______* Office Phone #______* My first written assignment will be due on______* I will be issued my locker and lock on ______* I will need to have my clothes and prepare for class on______* I will begin to prepare for class on______* Small locker number______* Big locker number______* Lock Combination______* Lock Number______

POLICIES AND PROCEDURES The physical education program is designed to assist each student in attaining a high a standard of health, fitness, and physical development. All students are expected to cooperate with a positive attitude toward their teacher and classmates, and to obey the rules and regulations made for the good of the group and the program. Your cooperation and adherence to the rules is one area that determines a portion of your grade. We are working towards teaching students that our subject area is an integral part of their whole education. We are attempting to articulate our curriculum with other departments. When possible, we find common themes and incorporate reading, writing, spelling, math, science, and history assignments as they relate to sport and movement.

DAILY GRADE STUDENTS ARE EVALUATED AND GRADED IN THE FOLLOWING AREAS: Preparation & Participation: Responsible for class materials, dressed in p.e. clothes, engaged in activities, effort, and CITIZENSHIP, time on task. Authentic Assessment: Written assignments, tests, knowledge & understanding. Social Skills: Attitude, behavior, effort, CITIZENSHIP, academic learning time. Performance: Skill progress, improvement, demonstration and use of game concepts. Physical Education Grade Scale 4 OR 5 Week Unit 93 OR MORE = A 92 – 90 = A- 89 – 87 = B+ 86 – 83 = B 82 – 80 = B- 79 – 77 = C+ 76 – 73 = C 72 – 70 = C- 69 – 67 = D+ 66 – 63 = D 62 – 60 = D- 59/LESS = F Students are evaluated on a daily basis using a 10 point scale. Students are expected to bring their own appropriate materials according to the P.E. policies to dress for class. If a student follows the prescribed criteria for the class they will receive all 10 points. Any deviation from expectations and that student will receive less than the 10 points. The students daily grade is based on 2 items: Preparation/Participation & Social Skills. Preparation /Participation is worth up to 5 points: Students will bring appropriate materials to class and participate to the best of their abilities. Students will participate in all the activities, drills, games and fitness activities. Social Skills are worth up to 5 points: Social skills are taught, modeled and emphasized in our program. As with any skill taught, we expect the students to display practical knowledge of social skills daily

NON- This occurs when students are unprepared for class by not having their p.e. clothes . One change the department is making this year is students who do not have their p.e. clothes can participate in their school clothes and still earn ½ credit for the day on their first non-suit of each quarter. Instead of having a loaner program the students will participate in their school clothes provided they have appropriate and foot wear. Female students who do not have appropriate clothing will borrow from the girl’s locker room. Male students who do not have appropriate clothing or will be given an alternative assignment. If students are unprepared and do not have their p.e. clothes two or more times in a quarter, the previous consequences below will still apply. The one exception will be that students will be expected to participate in their school clothes. This will help keep our students physically active and allow them to improve on their skills. However, in order to receive all of their points and not have a full grade reduction, students must be dressed in their p.e. clothes. CONSEQUENCE: Each Non-Suit” will require disciplinary action steps (SEE BELOW), and will lower their grade by one letter grade.

NON-SUIT UNPREPARED CONSEQUENCE STEPS 1ST INFRACTION – 5 point grade reduction if student participates in school clothes. 2ND INFRACTION – 1 FULL GRADE REDUCTION 3RD INFRACTION – 1 FULL GRADE REDUCTION, PARENT CONTACT, THRU. P.E. DETENTION 4TH INFRACTION – 1 FULL GRADE REDUCTION, REFERRAL TO V.P., WEDNESDAY SCHOOL PROGRESS REPORT. 5TH INFRACTION – 1 FULL GRADE REDUCTION, 6TH INFRACTION – 1 FULL GRADE REDUCTION, AUTOMATIC FAILURE FOR THE QUARTER. DISCIPLINE BEHAVIOR STEPS Listed below are the steps to be followed if a student either creates a discipline problem or shows no effort to improve. STEP 1 - Student warned-discipline problem recorded. STEP 2 - Parent contacted after school detention issued-Possible office referral. STEP 3 - Office referral-Possible suspension from class- Parent Conference requested. SEVERE DISRUPTION - Automatic placement on STEP 2. Parent Conference may be requested.

AUTHENTIC ASSESSMENT Once during each unit of instruction (4 or 5 weeks long) students are given an assignment to show their level of knowledge on a certain subject. These assignments vary and could be on a health related topic, historical or social implications of an activity or sport, knowledge of sport skills or a number of other topics. The method used to evaluate student knowledge also varies. Some examples include written tests, student reflective writings, and performance of skills learned, video observation and evaluation and invention of a game or routine. UNGRADED EVALUATIONS In order to monitor student comprehension as well as teaching effectiveness, we routinely use ungraded evaluations. These evaluations vary and can be done easily in the context of an instructional lesson. Examples include student demonstration of skills, peer evaluation of skills using reciprocal lessons and self evaluation of social skills using rubrics. ABSENCES & MAKE-UPS Each class period in our department is equivalent of what most departments consider an assignment. If a student was not in class they did not have a chance to earn their 10 points for that day. This department has developed a way in which students are given the opportunity to earn credit for days missed due to absence, excused medical and special circumstances in which the student was unable to participate. Upon returning to class it is the student’s responsibility to set up an appointment with their teacher to complete a make-up assignment. The assignment is worth up to 10 points. Failure to do the make-up assignment and the student will not earn any points for that day. Students must begin make-up within 3 days of their return to class. NOTE: Students CANNOT make-up unexcused Non-.

GOOD STUDENT PERFORMANCE Students will be recognized for excellence in all four graded areas each quarter. Certificates and small prizes are awarded depending on availability for excellence in effort, behavior, skills and cooperation with their classmates and instructor. We provide a T- to all students receiving our departments “Outstanding Achievement in Physical Education” award. Students may earn this recognition 3 times while at M.J.H.S. First Time Achiever: “Fit To Lead” Second Time Achiever: “Fit To Achieve” Third Time Achiever: “Fit For Life”

PARENTAL EXCUSE It is our philosophy that students participate within their capabilities. If it is necessary that your child be excused for 1 or 3 days, we require that your note states what your child’s limitations are. Our lessons vary and there are days when we are doing Low to Moderate activities.

MENSTRUAL PERIOD The menstrual period is a normal function of a females body and should NOT prevent participation in the regularly scheduled program. If a problem arises related to menstruation, inform and consult with your teacher or physician.

MEDICAL EXCUSE If any student needs to be excused for 3 or more days, a physicians note is required. We would appreciate the physician to state the child’s limitations. (ex. no throwing, no jumping, moderate jogging, walking okay, etc., etc.)
