June 2021 A FOCAL POINT Issue No. 248
PORT VINCENT — South Australia
PVPA REPORT JUNE 2021
As we put on the extra layer of clothes, and turn up the heater, the reality that winter is here starts to set in. A lot of con- versa on is revolving around flu jabs, and the ques on of ‘have you had a Covid Vaccina on…..or are you going to…. ?’ Covid con nues to rear its head. As lucky as we are to live in Australia; It appears the virus is here to stay, and the new way of going out, and checking in everywhere, is a regular daily fixture in all our lives.
It was good to see so many a end the public mee ngs regarding the CWMS Proposal for Port Vincent. I hope that everyone affected returned their surveys to the YP Council, and were able to access the Q & A documents on the YP Council website, or a hard copy from the Port Vincent Newsagency. We expect to hear more regarding this proposal a er the 9 th June Council Mee ng. (please refer Page 3 for more details)
Big congratula ons to the Water Tower Mural Commi ee who should be very proud of their achievement last month, with the comple on of the pain ng of the Water Tower. The bright colours can be seen from quiet a distance – and will definitely encourage passing traffic to detour through our fabulous town.
The Port Vincent Progress Associa on is hos ng a ‘Jingle in July’ event at the Ins tute. This will be a three course dinner and live entertainment by ‘Squirrel Grip’ on Saturday 24 th July. Keep a look out for further informa on and cket sales (limited ckets are available).
We are doing a shout out…… WE NEED YOU!!!! Gala Day 2022 planning is in full swing….. with an altered format planned. We are looking for volunteers to assist in the planning along the way. If you can offer your assistance, no ma er what skills you have, we can find a job for you! Many hands make light work- so if you can help out please contact
[email protected] or contact a commi ee member.

Editor’s Comments
In May I a ended the funeral of a very dear 95 year old friend, affec onately known as Mrs T. I have known Mrs T since my teenage years. She was the mother of one of my school friends, and also a great friend to my mother. Listening to the stories being related by her family and friends the underlying thread throughout was that Mrs T was a perpetual learner. Her philosophy was not to judge others, or even have an expecta on that she could change their opinions. She did not cri cise, she was always willing to listen and learn from those she came into contact with. She learnt a lot from life’s experiences, both as a rural farmer’s daughter, and then as the wife and business partner of an Adelaide based real estate agent . She had an open heart and an open mind. She was a truly inspira onal person. I o en speak of “learning something new every day”, and like to ask my teenage grandchildren “Can you teach me something I don’t already know?”. I have found that the “how did your day go at school?” usually gets an inaudible grunt as a response, but challenging them to teach me something gets them to interact, and I have to say I have learnt quite a lot from these young people!
Reading through this month’s A Focal Point, it is evident that the ac vi es offered by our local groups certainly not only offer the opportunity to socialise, but also to gain knowledge and understanding. Thank you to Trish for her ar cle on the Ventnor Hotel Social Club on Page 15. This social club has been working for our community for many years, and raises much needed funds for Yorke Peninsula chari es. Page 14 has informa on on the Biggest Morning Tea, and Page 18 has details on how you can assist at the Visitor Informa on Office. This is an opportunity to meet travellers from around Australia, and perhaps even from overseas (once COVID restric ons are eased). This is a really interes ng volunteering experience, and one which I am sure all the volunteers find very rewarding. If you are not permanently based in Port Vincent there are many avenues available for you to volunteer. Maybe you have some special talents to share? I know from my experience that you will definitely be enriched with new knowledge and experiences. These roles don’t necessarily have to be permanent roles. As an example, several townspeople have been assis ng Alan Jones (our historian) with informa on for the updated ‘Port Vincent—Port to Pleasure Resort’ book. A big thank you to anyone who has been involved in this project. Alan has done an amazing job to date. The Progress Associa on hope to have the book ready for release on 1st January 2022. Another amazing group of volunteers are in the ini al stages of wri ng tours of our town, with the hope that these tours will be available to the general pubic in the months ahead. There will be further informa on on how to volunteer as a tour guide in the coming edi ons of the A Focal Point.
Page 14 has a small ar cle on one of the town’s incredible “unsung” volunteers. Dani has been involved with the Port Vincent Library Depot for over 10 years, taking over from Margaret Braithwaite. This is a vital service to our community. A big thank you to Dani for her commitment to providing this important service.
The Port Vincent Progress Associa on, and some concerned residents, are s ll working with the relevant authori es to establish a decelera on lane at the northern entrance to our township, to enhance safety for road users. There has been a lot of correspondence between the relevant bodies, which s ll has not resolved the issue. There will be a pe on that will be placed at a number of businesses in town, invi ng not only local residents to sign, but also visi ng members of the public. Further informa on of the businesses that will be par cipa ng will be in the next couple of edi ons of the A Focal Point. One Port Vincent resident has been ac vely advoca ng for this to happen. His le er to the Adver ser is on Page 17.

WATER TOWER MURAL
Unfortunately due to the water tower being on an easement on private property, the public are unable to enter past the gate without having an authorised person with them.
Formal tours will be conducted in the coming months, once the story boards and easels, and the “Tower Trail” are completed.
In the mean me, if any residents would like to have a closer view of the tower, this is by appointment only, Wednesday and Saturday mornings at 10:30am. Please ring Jan on 0409 389 422, or Julie on 0438 322 451 at least 24 hours prior to these mes to ensure that spots are available.
Our water tower is now a part of the Yorke Peninsula Art Trail, and is also on the Australian Silo Art Trail. https://www.australiansiloarttrail.com/south-australian-water-tower-art-locations
We have also received publicity through SA Water’s website. The following is part of a press release issued by SA Water.
• The Port Vincent Water Tower mural was completed on Monday 17 th May 2021. This was nearly 21 months a er the original idea was proposed! • The small volunteer sub-commi ee of the Port Vincent Progress Associa on received the financial backing of both the Founda on for Rural and Regional Renewal (Tackling Tough Times Together) programme, and the SA Water Community Partnerships Programme. • The commi ee consulted with the local community about what they wanted to see on the tower, and received over 500 responses! The majority of the responses were in favour of “reflec ng Port Vincent’s history (both European and Indigenous/ Narungga), boa ng, fishing, beach, family fun”. • Ar st Joel Van Moore (Vans the Omega) was chosen to work with the commi ee to produce a design that reflected these sugges ons. Joel has designed a work of art, rather than a “postcard” scene. The tower shows the emo on and pride of the Port Vincent community. • The design has resulted in a marvellous mix of “old and new” – the past alongside the present, with the beau ful “ribbons” joining the images. • Port Vincent was originally called Surveyor’s Point. Shipping began at Surveyor’s Point prior to the je y being built. Our historic wharf is depicted on the tower – the first piles of the je y were driven on 4 th June 1877. • Ketches and steam ships once travelled between Adelaide and Port Vincent. The ketch depicted on the tower is a gesture to the Hawk, which was s ll transpor ng grain from the Port Vincent wharf in the 1960’s. If you look closely, you will see the bags of grain si ng on the wharf, with a depic on of the iconic hotel in the background (construc on of the hotel began in November 1877). The sunrise in the background represents the “new day” – with our easily recognisable pine trees depicted. • The sailing boats/yachts depicted on the tower are representa ve of our town’s affinity with boa ng and the Port Vincent bay, our sailing club, and school aqua cs programmes which are run throughout the year. • The young fisher person is typical of the scene on our wharf on most days of the year. The ar st has painted a classic scene of a fisher person with his border collie. This laconic scene is in stark contrast to the indigenous fisher person with his energy and enthusiasm. This certainly depicts the changes in lifestyle between past and present – the necessity to catch a fish (or not eat), which differs greatly to the “hobby” fishing that takes place now. • Port Vincent is known for its snapper, and if you look closely you will see these beau ful fish depicted in this artwork. • Our agricultural history is depicted on the northern sec on of the tower – a beau ful reflec on of what the adjacent paddocks look like just before harvest me. • The black swan is a reference to our indigenous heritage. These beau ful birds can be seen on Port Vincent’s “back beach”. The scene of waves of sand is also another reference to the dal aspect of Port Vincent – with the sandy beaches. • Approximately 300L of paint was used to prime and paint the mural on our tower.
The ar sts pain ng the mural were:-
• Camilo Delgado (le ) – who stayed and worked in Port Vincent for over 3 weeks. Camilo is a brush ar st. • Jasmine Crisp (right) – Jasmine assisted with the ini al colour sprays, and the graphing of the images on the tower. Jasmine stayed at Port Vincent for a week.

***Thank You*** Your support contributed so much to the work of art that is the Port Vincent Water Tower Mural. As a committee we faced many challenges, but knowing we had community support made the effort worthwhile. The end result has certainly brought something extra to our little town. We would particularly like to thank the residents and businesses of Port Vincent and Port Julia who were inconvenienced by the interruptions to their mobile/EFTPOS services. All other avenues were researched to avoid these shutdowns, but ultimately the shutdowns were deemed necessary to ensure the safety of the artists while painting to the top of the tower. Your patience and understanding during this process was very much appreciated.

SOMEBODY CARES. by Helen Steiner Rice
Somebody cares and always will, The world forgets but God loves you s ll, You cannot go beyond His Love no ma er what you’re guilty of - For God forgives un l the end, He is your faithful, loyal friend, And though you try to hide your face there is no shelter any place That can escape His watchful eye, for on the earth and in the sky HE’S EVER PRESENT and ALWAYS THERE To take you in His tender care and bind the wounds and mend the breaks When all the world around forsakes...... SOMEBODY CARES and LOVES YOU STILL and GOD is the SOMEONE who always will.

Monthly update
No doubt a highlight of recent weeks was confirma on of more roads funding for the electorate. On the heels of the announcement of the $6 million for the Arthurton to Maitland Road and $3 million for the Minlaton to Stansbury Road, then came the confirma on of significant works to soon commence on upgrading the Maitland to Minlaton Road (26 km), Yorke Highway between St Vincent Highway and Curramulka, and the Copper Coast Highway (near Kulpara, works already commenced).
I am very pleased to advise the tally of roads funding secured for our electorate since the March 2018 elec on now totals near $200 million. There’s plenty s ll to do but we’ve made a good start.
I spoke in the chamber last week of my hopes for next month’s State Budget, that it will be the catalyst to commence addressing other items long advocated for on my wish list such as paramedics, mobile phone towers and entry slip lanes.
Since my me as a candidate I have been making efforts to get slip lanes into communi es like Port Vincent and Hardwicke Bay. Now is the me, and I hope there’s funding allocated for these projects.
Health, too, remains a priority and now that Yorketown surgical procedures have been restored, improved status and increased resources for Wallaroo Hospital are top of list, as is addressing the serious need for more paramedics to cover our ambulance rosters.
Other items sorely needed are a new sea rescue vessel for Point Turton, upgrades for CFS sta ons, and dedicated funding for je y upgrades.
Grain harvest exceeds expecta ons
Whilst 2020-21 hasn’t offered much good news for so many due to COVID-19 and its health and economic im- pacts on this State and na on, the 2020-21 crop harvest was recently heralded the second most lucra ve crop on records in SA, reaching $2.5 billion in farm gate value from 9.14 million tonnes (the most lucra ve was the 2010-11 season, at $2.7 billion).
Now the first gene cally modified canola crops are being planted in South Australia following the li ing of a 16-year moratorium late last year.
We’ve had some rain this week, and let’s hope we get more.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR OF THE ADVERTISER— EMAILED BY A CONCERNED RESIDENT 8TH MAY 2021
Subject: Neither Public or Civil Service
“Our town on Yorke Peninsula has for years asked that a decelera on lane be provided at the main Northern intersec on of Lime Kiln and the Vincent Highway . The Department of Transport has been contacted on many occasions and has repeatedly replied with a standard “there hasn’t been a serious (ie. fatal) accident at the corner in 5 years”. According to them a de- accelera on or “slip lane isn’t jus fied un l there’s a fatality. You will note most towns on the Highway have a proper intersec on. They must have experienced carnage at their corners.
Finally a compromise has been promised. On the 23rd of March, a er 4 wri en approaches in 6 months, the Minister has finally agreed to a longer con nuous “no passing” white line on the Northern side of the intersec on (but not the Southern?) as well as light reflectors and an “intersec on ahead” indicator sign for vehicles approaching from the South. This is a poor compromise at best, and it seems un l a fatality occurs, common sense will not prevail over bureaucra c bumf.
In the mean me ... Drive carefully!”

***FISHING REPORT— Wayne Crouch***
Well, with winter fast approaching, the fishing is star ng to undergo changes.
Tommies and Salmon Trout are star ng to build up in numbers, and a feed can be caught quite readily from the wharf just on dusk, and also at the groyne by the caravan park. Salmon trout are also taking small Halco lures.
Squid are improving, and can also be caught from the wharf. I have also received reports that squid are being caught at the Port Julia je y.
Mullet are spasmodic, but building up in numbers around the cemetery on high de.
Garfish have tapered off, but a few can s ll be caught amongst the tommies.
Reports vary on King George Whi ng. Some fishers bag out, others miss out, but they should improve, hopefully in the next few weeks.
Good Fishing
Remember, where possible support your local businesses

BEACHSIDE CHRISTIAN CHURCH
It is with much sadness we inform you that Beachside Christian Church held its last service on 23 rd May 2021.
Due to ill health with some members of our Leadership Group, and relocation of members to other towns, it was impossible for us to continue.
And the peace of God which transcends all understanding will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:7
