Saint of the Week Blessed Junipero Serra 1713–1784 July 1 A Spanish missionary who is buried in California, Miguel José Serra was born on the Mediterranean island of Majorca. He entered the Franciscans in 1730, taking the name Junipero to honor an original companion of St. Francis of Assisi. He taught after being ordained but in 1749 volunteered for mission work among the Indians of Mexico and Texas. In 1767, the Franciscans under Father Serra took charge of the missions in Baja, California, and in 1769, he accompanied a military expedition into Alta (upper) California, where he founded nine of the 21 missions stretching from San Diego to Sonoma. Beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1988, he is the inspiration for Serra International, which encourages and affirms vocations. Pope Francis will preside at a Mass to canonize Blessed Junipero Serra on September 23, 2015, in Washington, DC. Thereafter, he will be known as St. Junipero Serra.

St. Peter’s Bones Fr. Larry Rice, CSP

Although lost for centuries, the tomb of St. Peter, Apostle and the first pope, was found when a team working beneath St. Peter’s Basilica between 1939 and 1949 discovered an extensive complex of mausoleums from the second and third centuries. In addition to this Roman necropolis, the present basilica was also built on top of the of the Constantinian basilica, which was, itself, apparently constructed such that its main altar is directly above the tomb of St. Peter. Today, it is possible to tour these excavations. Small groups are led underground through the ancient Roman burial places, past the Constantinian basilica’s remains, and finally to the tomb that most scholars believe contains the remains of St. Peter. Laudato Si’: On Care for Our Common Home

“LAUDATO SI’, mi’ Signore” – “Praise be to you, my Lord.” These are the words that open Pope Francis’ encyclical on ecology and care for God’s creation. These words, quoting St. Francis of Assisi’s beautiful canticle, remind us that our common home is like a sister with whom we share our life and a beautiful mother who opens her arms to embrace us.

Pope Francis addresses Laudato Si’ to “every person on the planet,” for we all share a common home—the earth. He focuses on a number of important themes.
