Parkside News 3 Summer 2014 17th Parkside Garden Tour and Architecture and History Walk Draw More Than 500 Visitors to Parkside

By Tom Ziobro, Garden Tour Chair

After a tropical ten-minute deluge, complete with a blinding flash and sharp crack of thunder, the weather broke and a muggy, overcast, but clearing day bode well for the rest of the afternoon. More than 500 in- trepid visitors to Parkside defied the heat and humidity to wander about our neighborhood and admire 47 of our meticulously maintained gardens and hidden back- yard retreats. The Architecture and History walk, nar- rated by Parkside resident George Stock, had more than 50 enthusiastic attendees who listened and learned about the diverse architectural elements and notable residents of our neighborhood from the pages of Buffalo history. New this year, we hosted a meet- and-greet potluck BBQ in Meredith Christman's back- yard to give dozens of gardeners and volunteers a chance to eat, drink, celebrate, and share gardening tips and traumas. I'd like to thank all the gardeners who made this event possible as well as the volunteers who took time from their weekend to help out on the day of the tour. Hope to see you all next year!

Parkside News 4 Summer 2014 Parkside News 5 Summer 2014 16th Annual Tour of Homes Was a Superb Success

The 16th annual Tour of Homes had another successful year! More than 500 guests came to Parkside from all over Western New York and Canada. PCA Board President Monica Cichon served as this year’s event chairperson. Chair of docents was Michael O’Sullivan. Pam Martin designed the tour book- let. Devon and Kevin Karn designed the booklet cover, poster, and tickets. Joe Popiolkowski and Bernie Wag- ner were photographers for the event. The Tour of Homes committee did a fantastic job brainstorming, selling ads for the tour booklet, getting gift certificates for the raffle baskets, and coordinating every loose end. Seven months of hard work paid off! The commit- tee consisted of Barb Graham, Marybeth Hallmark, Devon Karn, Chris Lavey, Mike O’Sullivan, Theresa Roma, Amber Small, Debra Wagner, Bonnie Wein- berger, and Rich Wolf. Thank you to all the docents who gave of their time to facilitate the presentation of Parkside homes. Special thanks to the homeowners who graciously opened their beautiful homes: Pam Maglietto and Rich Powers, The Parfucci Family, Theresa and Adam Roma, Patricia Lalonde, Nancy Abramo and Len Mattie, Molly and Jim Gold, Jeanne and Robert Spampata, Devon and Kevin Karn, Phyllis and Ken Wells, and Jake and Nicole Bishop. A special thank you to the Martin House Restoration Corporation, which opened its Gardener’s Cottage, Barton House, and Conservatory to visitors. Thank you to Good Shepherd Church for allowing the PCA to use Jewett Hall for the after-party. Sincere grat- itude to all those businesses and individuals who pur- chased ads in the tour booklet and donated items. A great time was had by all—homeowners, do- cents, and tour participants. If you would like to have your home on the Tour of Homes next year, please contact the PCA at 838.1240 or [email protected]. Keep Sunday, May 17, 2015, open for the 17th Annual Tour of Homes! Parkside News 6 Summer 2014 Parkside Century Home Plaque Program

The Parkside Century Home Plaque Program celebrates our historically de- signed Frederick Law Olmsted neigh- borhood and the significance of our homes. The plaque is available to all qualifying homes within the Parkside neighborhood that are 100 years old or older. The circa option is used for years that are estimated (for example, circa 1899). Parkside Century Home Plaques are oval and made of bronze with a dark green background and a brushed raised surface. They are 10 inches wide by 7 inches high and are mounted by two brass screws. The cost of the plaque is $185, which in- cludes shipping and handling to the PCA office.

PCA Research for Home Data: $25 Applied to Cost of Plaque
