BAB I PENDAHULUAN 1.1 Latar Belakang Popularitas kontes kecantikan yang diawali di Eropa telah merambah ke banyak negara termasuk Indonesia. Sejumlah kontes kecantikan meramaikan industri pertelevisian, salah satunya adalah kontes kecantikan Puteri Indonesia yang sudah diselenggarakan sejak tahun 1992. Ajang Puteri Indonesia digagas oleh pendiri PT Mustika Ratu, yaitu Mooryati Soedibyo. Di tahun 2020, kompetisi Puteri Indonesia kembali digelar dan ditayangkan di stasiun televisi SCTV. Penyelenggaraan kontes, melibatkan 39 finalis yang berlomba menampilkan performa terbaik untuk memperebutkan gelar dan mahkota Puteri Indonesia. Pemilihan 39 finalis yang berkompetisi di panggung Puteri Indonesia melalui proses yang tidak mudah. Yayasan Puteri Indonesia (YPI) menjelaskan bahwa perempuan yang berhasil menjadi perwakilan provinsi dipilih melalui seleksi ketat. YPI membebankan syarat utama bagi calon peserta untuk memenuhi kriteria “Brain, Beauty, Behavior”. Secara spesifik YPI mematok kontestan harus memiliki tinggi minimal 170 cm, berpenampilan menarik, dan pernah atau sedang menempuh pendidikan di perguruan tinggi. With 80 per cent of the population watching the pageant on television, Miss Venezuela commands a much greater audience share than any FA Cup Final. In international beauty competition, the country is dominant, having won four Miss Universes, five Miss Worlds and three Miss International titles in the past 24 years. It is said that Venezuela has two great exports: oil and beauty. The former accounts for more than 90 per cent of GDP, but despite this source of wealth half the populace lives in poverty, a legacy of poor government spanning generations. Even with the oil millions at its disposal, the current Chavez administration persists in blaming its failings on private enterprise and imperialism as it tries to force an unwilling nation towards Cuban-style communism. Beauty, on the other hand, is much more accessible to the average Venezuelan. Whether you travel on the subway or walk the finest shopping streets, you will find men and women who care deeply about how they look. It is estimated that 20 per cent of average household income is spent on beauty products and enhancements. With such interest, it is little wonder that winning the Miss Venezuela title is considered a genuine achievement. As a result, competitors in the pageant come from all walks of life, although the 20 entrants who make the final cut are invariably university students.

Those who handle this kind of shows knew that male body was also a product they can merchandise as they have been doing with the female body the last thirty years. If this step came slowly it was because the process of reducing the semiotic differences between masculine and feminine was also slow. Masculinity and femininity were two extremes of the gender differences meant to express not only a sex difference but the separation of two worlds and two cultures. Men not only establish their own world as an affirmation of their identity and control, but also as a rejection of a feminine world they always charged with negative connotations, and, consequently, placed at the bottom of the cultural and social scale. Any meaning related to feminine was presented as inferior, and the women body was always seen just as instrument of pleasure and reproduction, even as ornament of a triunphant man. Its mysteries were always source of fears, and, consequently, feminine body had to be controlled and mastered. Seen not as an equal body, women¹s body had to be under surveillance, and under a process of identification and, by doing so, a process aimed to make women¹s body different.

The pageant “Miss Danmark” seems to have been thriving on its own in the periphery of the pub- lic eye for almost a century. This thesis investigates the pageant seen as a platform for a gendered performance of a feminine ideal. Additionally, this thesis sees the ambassadors, judges and contestants of the pageant as cultural manufacturers, who construct and reconstruct the competition’s feminine ideal through a rela- tional discourse about looks, styling, clothes, behavior, values etc. I apply a discourse analysis of the communication originating from Miss Danmark’s website and Facebook site, as well as of interviews with contestants, mentors and judges found in the documentary Miss Perfect (2019). I am interested in investigating which understandings of ideal femininity are expressed as norma- tive, which qualities are emphasized, and which are reprimanded. Furthermore, I investigate the structure of the pageant. The feminine ideal is also constructed and reconstructed through the pageants structure, as it contains certain mandatory requirements for participation, a number of disciplines in which the contestants’ performance can be judged, a number of rounds with different dress and rules, and a system in which certain performances are celebrated through sashes, prices and high placements in the competition, while others are not.

This research uses qualitative research method with phenomenology approach. Research subjects consisted of 4 men in Pekanbaru City who had followed the male pageant event chosen using snowball technique. Data collection is done through in-depth interviews, observation and documentation. To test the validity of the data the author using the method of extension of participation and triangulation. The result of this research shows that male motive in Pekanbaru City follows the male pageant consisting of past motive (because motive) and future motive (in order to motive).

In the year 2011 alone, Filipinos rallied around the participation of their country’s representatives in a total of four different global pageants. The results of these contests are as follows: 2011 Miss Universe: 4th place (with two additional past victories) 2011 Miss World: 2nd place 2011 Miss International: Ranking among the top 15 (with four additional past victories) 2011 Miss Earth: 3rd place The Miss Universe pageant, which took place in September 2011, received a great deal of attention in the Philippines due in part to the fact that the competition was the first such global contest to take place that year. Domestic media focused closely upon the contest, whose Filipino representative was a talented graduate from the University of the Philippines College of Architecture. I was on the university campus on the day of the contest, and saw some students and staffs gathered around televisions to watch the contest. They screamed excitedly every time the Filipino contestant advanced to the next level, remaining extremely enthusiastic even when she placed fourth rather than emerging as the top winner. I would like to add that the reaction of the media to this competition result may have been that of typical English speaking countries, wherein she was strongly praised for being the only contestant among the top five to be able to answer questions in English without the aid of an interpreter. Another reason for the close focus upon the Miss Universe pageant in the Philippines—as well as the country’s excitement with regard to the results—was that the Filipino contestant had come in fifth place the previous year in 2010.
