  • La Scorta Dear Moviegoer, Are You Tired of the Explosions and Broken
La Scorta Dear Moviegoer, are you tired of the explosions and broken glass of True Lies , Speed, Blown Away, and Clear and Present Danger ? Weary of the cartoon characters and cartoon plots of movies like Maverick,The Mask, or Baby’s Day Out ? Ready for some real adult (no, I don’t mean that kind of “adult”) entertainment with real tension, pace and motivation which is modeled carefully on actual events? Then try La Scorta (“The Escort”), an outstanding Italian film from a director who is one to watch. La Scorta, directed by Ricky Tognazzi, is as fresh and vivid as the Italian crime headlines of the last few years, due in great part to its being based on the real experiences of one Francesco Taurisano as an investigating magistrate (called a “judge” in the sub-titles) in Sicily during the late 1980’s. It is such judges, at least the honorable ones, who have become the target of Mafia hit men as they plumbed closer and closer to the heart of Cosa Nostra operations. The most infamous of these assassinations was that of the anti-Mafia Judge Giovanni Falcone, killed in a car bomb in May 1992. This is not, then, a world of facile and meaningless blow-’em-ups where Schwarzenegger or Stallone dwell, but the real, nasty thing, happening in one of Europe’s established democracies. The film follows four policemen who find themselves assigned as the protective escort for one of these investigating magistrates working in the town of Trapani, in the far northwest corner of Sicily.

  • 43E Festival International Du Film De La Rochelle Du 26 Juin Au 5 Juillet 2015 Le Puzzle Des Cinémas Du Monde

The films, texts, and classroom materials will cover a broad range of domestic, independent, and international cinema, making students aware of the culture, politics, and social history of the periods in which the films were produced.

Issue #72 Summer / Fall 2008 Lars Bloch Interview (part 2) A Man, a Colt The MGM Rolling Road Show Latest DVD Reviews WAI! #72 THE SWINGIN’ DOORS April and May were months that took a number of well known actors of the Spaghetti western genre: Jacques Berthier, Robert Hundar, John Phillip Law and Tano Cimarosa were all well known names in the genre. Of course we should expect as much since these people are now well into their 70s and even 80s. Still in our minds they are young vibrant actors who we see over and over again on video and DVD. It’s hard to realize that it’s been 40+ years since Sergio Leone kicked off the Spaghetti western craze and launched a world wide revolution in film that we still see influencing films today. Hard to believe Clint Eastwood turned 78 on May 30th. Seems like only yesterday he was the ‘Man with No Name’ and starring in the first of the Leone films that launched the genre. Remember when Clint was criticized so badly as an actor and for the films he appeared in during the 60s and 70s. Now he’s revered in Hollywood because he’s outlived his critics. I guess we recognized a real star long before the critics did. A great idea came to Tim League’s mind in the launching of the “Rolling Road Show”, where films are actually shown where they were filmed. I wasn’t able to travel to Spain to see the Dollars trilogy but we have a nice review of the films and the experience by someone who was there.

  • La Cultura Italiana
LA CULTURA ITALIANA FEDERICO FELLINI (1920-1993) This month’s essay continues a theme that several prior essays discussed concerning fa- mous Italian film directors of the post-World War II era. We earlier discussed Neorealism as the film genre of these directors. The director we are considering in this essay both worked in that genre and carried it beyond its limits to develop an approach that moved Neoreal- ism to a new level. Over the decades of the latter-half of the 20th century, his films became increasingly original and subjective, and consequently more controversial and less commercial. His style evolved from Neorealism to fanciful Neorealism to surrealism, in which he discarded narrative story lines for free-flowing, free-wheeling memoirs. Throughout his career, he focused on his per- sonal vision of society and his preoccupation with the relationships between men and women and between sex and love. An avowed anticleric, he was also deeply concerned with personal guilt and alienation. His films are spiced with artifice (masks, masquerades and circuses), startling faces, the rococo and the outlandish, the prisms through which he sometimes viewed life. But as Vincent Canby, the chief film critic of The New York Times, observed in 1985: “What’s important are not the prisms, though they are arresting, but the world he shows us: a place whose spectacularly grand, studio-built artificiality makes us see the interior truth of what is taken to be the ‘real’ world outside, which is a circus.” In addition to his achievements in this regard, we are also con- sidering him because of the 100th anniversary of his birth.

  • Riflessi Di Fellini-Satyricon Nella Stampa Periodica Illustrata Contemporanea*

  • Malena Every Few Years Or So, a Modest Italian Movie Sidles Into
Malena Every few years or so, a modest Italian movie sidles into public consciousness and, through word of mouth, goes mainstream, enough so that even the multiplex masses are reading subtitles. In 1991 there was the Academy Award winner Mediterraneo which did good business. In 1995, Il Postino (The Postman) did even better, earning more money in the U.S. than any previous foreign-language film. In 1998, La Vita é Bella (Life is Beautiful) did even better boxoffice. One could say that this string of Italian hits began little more than ten years ago with Giuseppe Tornatore’s charming tale of Sicily Cinema Paradiso. Tornatore, a Sicilian himself (see interview below) has now returned with another Sicilian period piece, Malena, hoping no doubt for another success in the American. The film tells the story of the gloriously beautiful Malena Scordia (Monica Bellucci) during the early 1940’s in the Sicilian town (fictitious) of Castelcuto. Impeccably dressed but genuinely modest, she has every man in town panting for her and every woman in town despising her. Her husband is away at war, after all, and nobody has the right to look that good. Observing Malena from a distance--and worshiping her--is 13-year-old Renato (Giuseppe Sulfaro) who dreams of being her protector and who follows her every move (including spying on her home). After receiving word of the death of her husband, and after her doddering father comes to believe the worst rumors about her, Malena is left alone and destitute. She gradually yields to the inevitable male advances and eventually becomes a high-priced call girl for the occupying German troops.
