Pioneers from , looking for gems, and plunged into the hinterlands of Northern Province of São Paulo and Minas de Oro. Antonio Figueira Goncalves, who belonged to the Flag of Fernao Dias, accompanied her to the banks of the River where, with , head left, returning to Sao Paulo and arrived there two years later.

Seduced by the fertility of the Wilderness, Mining, and perhaps in the hope of winning wealth, and Matias Antonio Figueira Goncalves Cardoso returned to become settlers, Indians hunting and building farms, whose seats have become cities. The farms conducted in Northern Minas, strategically, promoted supply of mining regions, making it the most viable route for displacement of the Northeast to the new economic center of the colony. This condition contributed to the intensification of settlement in the northern mining.

Formed three large farms in the region: Jaiba, Olhos d'Agua and Montes Claros, this, located in the headwaters of the Verde River, left bank, near the hills formed by calcareous shales, with little vegetation. Permit by April 1707, Antonio Goncalves Figueira received the allotment of a mile wide by three long, which was the Fazenda Montes Claros. Jammed inside the plantation, founded, first, the town of Cruise, which was located near the place where today stands the country club Lagoa da Barra. However, a smallpox epidemic forced the exodus of Cruzeiro to a another part of the allotment, the bank of a stream good for fishing, drinking water, near the Current Church Square.

He graduated as well, from 1768 at a different site of the original seat of Antonio Figueira Goncalves, around the chapel built by José Lopes de Carvalho, the prosperous Arraial Ant after Camp of the Immaculate Conception and St. Joseph of Ants, Village of Montes Claros Ants and, finally, the city of Montes Claros.

5.1. Population

At the 2000 Census, the city had a population of 306,900 inhabitants, of which 289 100 (94%) in urban and 17 800 (6%) in rural areas. Estimate released in August/2009 by the same body, ranks as the sixth Montes Claros. mining town population (363,200 inhabitants), which represents a growth of 1.38% over the year 2008. The population density is 98.4 inhabitants / km ². The infant mortality rate is 18.1 p/1.000 inhabitants.

The city's total population increased from 72,400 inhabitants in 1950 to 342.5 thousand in 2005, representing a growth of around 373% in the observed period of 2005 growth for 2007 was approximately 2.78%. The highest sustained growth occurred between 1950 and 1960, when the increase of the total population reached 83% in a decade.

It is believed that this fact was due to the emergence and subsequent expansion of industrial activities in the city, from the installation of a number of projects awarded funds SUDENE, which probably increased the immigration from neighboring cities to Montes Claros. Destacase, Also, between 1960 and 1970, falling about 12% of the total population, occurred in due to the emancipation of , hitherto owned by the municipality.

The data for the 1950 Census make an obvious error in the quantification total population, since the rural and urban populations, when added together, do not reach the the total population. Similarly, when analyzing the 1960 census, the population sex male and female, when added, also do not reach the total population.

According to IBGE, these errors are due to the fact that once the research is done, are released preliminary data to the segmentation of rural, urban and by gender. Then there is correction of population data, which relate only to the population total, with no correction of partial populations (rural, urban, female and male).

5.2. Age group

The age distribution of the population in 2000 is 10 to 19 years, with 68 800 inhabitants, representing 22.4% of the total. Then there are the age groups 20 to 29 years (19.1%) and 30 to 39 years (14.8%). Life expectancy at birth is 72.2 years.

5.3. Population by sex

Of the 306 900 inhabitants in 2000, 148 400 are male (48.3%) and 158.4 thousand are female (51.7%).

5.4. Literacy index

The adult literacy rate, according to the IBGE Census 2000 reaches 90.08%.

5.5. Income of the population

The income per capita of the population is R $ 245.43 per year, below the per capita income of Minas Gerais, which is R $ 273.00 and above that calculated for the North of Minas Gerais, which is R $ 133.00. According to the Ombudsman of the Military Police of Minas Gerais, the Gini Index of Montes Claros is 0.62. This index measures the degree of equality / inequality in distribution of income among the population on a scale ranging from 0 (zero) to 1 (one), where 0 means perfect distribution of income and an imperfect distribution of income.

5.6. Index of human development (IDH)

5.7. Employment

According to data from CAGED, the number of hirings and firings in Montes Claros has been in decline over the period 2000 to 2002/2003, returning to growth after 2004. For the period from January to March 2007, an increase of 9.41% in the number of admissions and a 10.7% drop in the number of layoffs over the same period last year. The number of admissions increased from 16,761 in 2000 to 19,193 in 2005. In 2006 there was no great variation in the previous year, while the number stood at 19,098 admissions.
