Proc Soc Antiq Scot 144 (2014), PICTISH169–204 SYMBOL STONES AND EARLY CROSS-SLABS FROM ORKNEY | 169 Pictish symbol stones and early cross-slabs from Orkney Ian G Scott* and Anna Ritchie† ABSTRACT Orkney shared in the flowering of interest in stone carving that took place throughout Scotland from the 7th century AD onwards. The corpus illustrated here includes seven accomplished Pictish symbol- bearing stones, four small stones incised with rough versions of symbols, at least one relief-ornamented Pictish cross-slab, thirteen cross-slabs (including recumbent slabs), two portable cross-slabs and two pieces of church furniture in the form of an altar frontal and a portable altar slab. The art-historical context for this stone carving shows close links both with Shetland to the north and Caithness to the south, as well as more distant links with Iona and with the Pictish mainland south of the Moray Firth. The context and function of the stones are discussed and a case is made for the existence of an early monastery on the island of Flotta. While much has been written about the Picts only superb building stone but also ideal stone for and early Christianity in Orkney, illustration of carving, and is easily accessible on the foreshore the carved stones has mostly taken the form of and by quarrying. It fractures naturally into flat photographs and there is a clear need for a corpus rectilinear slabs, which are relatively soft and can of drawings of the stones in related scales in easily be incised, pecked or carved in relief. -

THE VIKINGS IN ORKNEY James Graham-Campbell Introduction In recent years, it has been suggested that the first permanent Scandinavian presence in Orkney was not the result of forcible land-taking by Vikings, but came about instead through gradual penetration - a period which has been described as one of'informal' settlement (Morris 1985: 213; 1998: 83). Such would have involved a phase of co-existence, or even integration, between the native Picts and the earliest Norse settlers. This initial period, it is supposed, was then followed by 'a second, formal, settlement associated with the estab lishment of an earldom' (Morris 1998: 83 ), in the late 9'h century. The archaeological evidence advanced in support of the first 'period of overlap' is, however, open to alternative interpretation and, indeed, Alfred Smyth has com mented ( 1984: 145), in relation to the annalistic records of the earliest Viking attacks on Ireland, that these 'strongly suggest that the Norwegians did not gradually infiltrate the Northern Isles as farmers and fisherman and then sud denly tum nasty against their neighbours'. Others have supposed that the first phase of Norse settlement in Orkney would have involved, in the words of Buteux (1997: 263): 'ness-taking' (the fortifying of a headland by means of a cross-dyke) and the occupation of small off-shore islands. Crawford ( 1987: 46) argues that headland dykes on Orkney can be interpreted as indicating ness-taking. However many are equally likely to be prehistoric land boundaries, and no bases on either headlands or small islands have yet been positively identified. Buteux continues his discussion by observing, most pertinently, that: While this can not be taken as suggesting that such sites do not remain to be uncovered, the striking fact is that almost all identified Viking-period settlements in the Northern Isles are found overlying or immediately adjacent to sites which were occupied in the preceding Pictish period and which, furthermore, had frequently been settlements of some size and importance. -

MAX NATHAN 2 Abstract This thesis examines the economic effects of cultural diversity; it focuses on recent experience in British cities, and on links between migrant and minority communities, diversity and innovation. Like many western societies Britain is becoming more culturally diverse, a largely urban process driven by net immigration and growing minority communities. Despite significant public interest we know little about the economic impacts. This PhD aims to fill these major gaps. First, I explore connections between diversity, immigration and urban outcomes. I ask: does diversity help or hinder urban economic performance? Initial cross-sectional analysis finds positive associations between ‘super-diversity’ and urban wages. -

Abstract It is generally agreed that some numbers such as three and nine which appear frequently in the two Eddas hold special significances in Norse mythology. Furthermore, numbers appearing in sagas not only denote factual quantity, but also stand for specific symbolic meanings. This tradition of number symbolism could be traced to Pythagorean thought and to St. Augustine‟s writings. But the result in Old Norse literature is its own system influenced both by Nordic beliefs and Christianity. This double influence complicates the intertextuality in the light of which the symbolic meanings of numbers should be interpreted. -
The Grettis Saga Through Time and Space: an Exploration of Topics in Old Norse Sagas

Abstract The paper provides a brief summary of the Old NorseGrettis Saga and examines it in terms of research aspects outside of the field of literary studies. It highlights the historical, cultural, social, and religious contexts of the work, giving explanation as to where indications of them can be found in the saga. At the same time it tries to explain some of the more obscure aspects, such as the supernatural elements, in order to give clarity to the method of interpretation. Vital information on the grouping of Old Norse sagas, as well as the importance of ancestry in the texts, are provided and elaborated. Definitions of key terms essential to understand the source material are provided and kept on a level clear to a reader not fluent in the topic. Categorizations of the mentioned saga genre are also provided, with the hope to spark interest in the vast variety of motifs and key aspects of the Old Norse sagas. Further suggestions for research outside of the field are presented; however, they are not taken up completely. The paper shows the Old Norse sagas as potent, yet often overlooked, literary works worthy of attention as possible research material in the field of humanities. Keywords: Old Norse saga, Grettis Saga, literature, medieval studies, sagas of the Icelanders The aim of the following paper is to present the Old NorseGrettis Saga highlighting some of the many aspects in which the text can be useful in research, even outside of purely literary theses. -

Haymes One of the proudest inventions of German scholarship in the nineteenth century was the Heldenlied, the heroic song, which was seen by scholars as the main conduit of Germanic heroic legend from the Period of Migrations to the time of their being written down in the Middle Ages. The concept stems indirectly from the suggestions of several eighteenth-century Homeric scholars that since the Homeric poems were much too long to have been memorized and performed in oral tradition, they must have existed as shorter, episodic songs. Friedrich August Wolf’s well-known Prolegomena ad Homerum (1795) collected evidence for the idea that writing was not used for poetry until long after Homer’s time. He argued for a thorough recension of the poem under (or perhaps by) Pisistratus in the sixth century BCE as the first comprehensive written Homer. These ideas were almost immediately applied to the Middle High German Nibelungenlied by Karl Lachmann (1816), who was trained as a classical philologist and indeed continued to contribute in that area at the same time that he was one of the most influential members of the generation that founded the new discipline of Germanistik. On the basis of rough spots and contradictions (not only Homer nods!) Lachmann thought he could recognize twenty separate Lieder in the Middle High German epic. At the same time that Lachmann was deconstructing the German medieval epic, Elias Lönnrot was assembling the Finnish epic he called Kalevala from shorter songs in conscious imitation of the Homer (or Pisistratus) described by Wolf. -

Wie dunkel war also das Mittelalter? 88 2020 Abstract: Wenngleich die Geschichte der mittelalterlichen Handschrift bereits vielfach un- tersucht worden ist, lohnt es sich immer wieder, die zentrale Rolle der Handschriften für die moderne Bewertung jener mittelalterlichen Gesellschaft in Betracht zu ziehen. Immer noch hören wir viel zu schnell vom sogenannten ‘dunklen Mittelalter’, so als ob jeder Aspekt der damaligen Zeit negativ oder primitiv, ja barbarisch gewesen wäre. Kulturhistorisch erweist sich solch ein Pauschalurteil sowieso immer als höchst problematisch. Indem hier erneut die Entste- hung und das Wesen mittelalterlicher Handschriften vor allem im literarhistorischen Kontext betrachtet wird, ergibt sich die ungemein wichtige Möglichkeit, innovative epistemologische Kategorien zu entwickeln, um unser Wahrnehmungsvermögen vergangener Kulturen wie der des europäischen Mittelalters kritisch zu schärfen und zu erkennen, dass unsere Urteile über die Vergangenheit meist doch durch konkrete subjektive Filter bestimmt sind, die kaum der kritischen Überprüfung standzuhalten vermögen. Mittelalterliche Handschriften repräsentie- ren bestimmt nicht die gesamte Gesellschaft der damaligen Zeit, vielmehr nur die intellektuelle und soziale Elite, aber sie bestätigen auf ihre Weise, dass auch in der Vormoderne ungemein hochentwickelte und ästhetisch und philosophisch bedeutsamste Kunst- und Schriftwerke ent- stehen konnten. FOLKTALE and PARABLE: the Unity O/Gautreks Saga
ELIZABETH ASHMAN ROWE FOLKTALE AND PARABLE: The Unity o/Gautreks Saga As SEVERAL SCHOLARS have pointed out, Gautreks saga has no single pro- tagonist, no chronological plot, and a haphazard assortment of characters and settings.' It is currently considered a single text, but the heterogenous nature of its parts is so great that it has led in the past to the perception of these parts 2 as constituting relatively independent/?œrf/7. Despite such „deviations" from the techniques of classical composition, I would like to propose that a single 3 theme does inform the saga. In it, the traditional characteristics of the suc- 1 E.g., Boyer (1979) and Kathryn Hume (1973). Joseph Harris (1975, 1986:210 ff.) has drawn attention to a number of texts which do not display „biographical unity", such as Qg- mundar þáttr dytts ok Gunnars helmings, and Gautreks saga can be added to the list. Although Gautreks saga is preserved in two versions, one shorter and earlier, and the other longer and later, it is with the longer one, believed written towards the end of the thirteenth century, that I am concemed. See Ranisch (1900:i—xviii). The shorter version, whose lack of detail makes the action seem illogical and unmotivated, also does not include the story of Starkaðr. Henceforth, references to Gautreks saga indicate the longer version unless specified otherwise. 2 So Schier (1970:76, 78, 89). Hermann Pálsson and Edwards (1985:10-3) give no hint in the introduction to their translation that Gautreks saga might be „separable", and the assumption of the unity of Gautreks saga is essential to the argument of Régis Boyer (1979). -
The Role of the Dead in Medieval Iceland: a Case Study of Eyrbyggja Saga1
CM 2011 ombrukket7_CM 22.03.12 12:50 Side 23 The Role of the Dead in Medieval Iceland: A Case Study of Eyrbyggja saga1 kIRSI kANERVA The article concerns the ghost story of Eyrbyggja saga, the so-called ‘wonders of fróðá’ (fróðárundr), and examines the symbolic meanings of this episode as they were interpreted in medieval Iceland. The analysis presupposes that, although the restless dead could be understood as ‘real’ by medieval readers and as part of their social reality, the heterogenic nature of the audience and the learning of the writers of the sagas made possible various interpretations of the ghost-scene, both literal and symbolic. It is argued that the living dead in Eyrbyggja saga act as agents of order, whose restlessness is connected to past deeds of those still living that have caused social disequilibrium. In fróðárundr these actions involve expressions of disapproved sexuality and birth of offspring with indeterminate social status. for the ghost-banisher the hauntings represent an opportunity to improve his own indeterminate status. In this article I intend to discuss the role of the malevolent restless dead in medieval Iceland by making a case study of the so-called wonders of fróðá, the Fróðárundr episode in Eyrbyggja saga. In general, for the living such creatures seem to be a source of various forms of malice and fear. They can make people lose their minds, become ill or even die. Their strength often exceeds that of the living, but it is not limitless, and is always ultimately challenged and conquered by the hero, who with great strength and skill banishes the monster for good. -

Herrn.ann Pillsson: Saga Scholarshipl Magnus Magnusson IT was an inspired idea to dedicate this annual meeting of the Scottish Society for Northern Studies to the enduring memory of Hermann Palsson, and to hold it in the David Hume Tower of Edinburgh University. It was here, nearly 40 years ago, that the first meeting was held to discuss a proposal that 'it would be very useful for to have a purely Scottish branch of the Viking Society for Northern Research'. That was on 14 February 1967. It took nearly two years for this proposal to become reality - well, they were all scholars, after all- 21 months of debate and discussion and good old-fashioned academic argy-bargy. At any rate, a constitution was finally adopted on 14 November 1968; and one of the first committee-members was Hermann Palsson; he remained a staunch committee member of the Scottish Society for Northern Research, and was President of the Society in the 1970/71 season. I am proud to be able claim that I was one of his many friends and admirers. And I feel very proud, and humble, to be his encomiast for the start the day's proceedings. It's a pleasing word, encolniast one who delivers an encolniuln, which from its Greek derivation means a 'festive panegyric'. Let me start with a brief sketch of Hermann's early days. He was born in 1921 in the north of Iceland on the farm of SauOanes a Asum, near Blondu6s on Hunafjorour, the sixth child in a family of twelve. He learned to read and write at the age of three by eavesdropping on Talk given at the Annual Conference of the Scottish Society for Northern Studies, 19 November 2005.
