Forgotten F1 Teams – Spyker F1 Welcome to Forgotten F1 Teams – a Miniseries Brought to You by Sidepodcast
Forgotten F1 Teams – Spyker F1 Welcome to Forgotten F1 Teams – a miniseries brought to you by Sidepodcast. We’re looking at those teams who deserve a place in the history books, whether it is for greatness, or mediocrity. Today we’re getting right up to date with our fifth team – Spyker F1. The roots of current Formula One team Force India F1 start way back in 1991 with Jordan Grand Prix. They have been through several iterations in recent times, and today we’re going to talk about just one of them. Jordan was bought by Midland F1 who were bought by Spyker. Spyker Cars are a relatively new Dutch automotive company, although the name dates back to the early 1900s. This new, modern version of Spyker was founded in 1999, and they build high performance sports cars. They did have a little motorsport experience, building and running GT cars. The key to their entrance into Formula 1 seems to be with Michiel Mol, a wealthy internet entrepreneur. He had previously sponsored Jos Verstappen, and wanted to further his involvement with the sport. His new deal saw him invest in Spyker Cars, to help them invest in F1, to the tune of over $100 million. He became their Director of F1 Racing. The deal with Midland was completed mid‐way through the 2006 season. Current drivers Christijan Albers and Tiego Monteiro were kept on, whilst the team set about trying to change their name. The regulations frown upon mid‐ season name changes, though, so Spyker stuck to being a title sponsor – Spyker MF1 Racing. -
Friday Press Conference Transcript 23.03.2018
FEDERATION INTERNATIONALE DE L' AUTOMOBILE 2018 FIA Formula One World Championship Australian Grand Prix Friday Press Conference Transcript 23.03.2018 TEAM REPRESENTATIVES –Toto WOLFF (Mercedes), Maurizio ARRIVABENE (Ferrari), Christian HORNER (Red Bull Racing) PRESS CONFERENCE A question to all of you to start with, what sort of shape are you in relative to each going into this new championship? After all, one of your is likely to be the world champion team at the end of it. Christian, why don’t you start? Christian HORNER: First of all, it’s great to be back in Melbourne, good to be going racing again. It seems like a long winter this one. A positive first session for us, though obviously difficult to read too much into times but you start to get an bit of an idea. You can see Mercedes taking off where they left off; they look in great shape. I think we made good progress with the car over the winter. The drivers seem happy and I’m envisaging a quite tight battle with Maurizio but I’m not sure at the moment what the delta is to Toto’s cars. Toto? Toto WOLFF: Again, like Christian said, it’s good to get started again. We’ve had a pretty good test, much better than last year. But you’re never very sure where that will end up in the first race and the first session was OK, as expected. We didn’t see the Ferraris on the tyres that we have been running, and we need a little bit more time to understand, but I would say it’s a decent start. -

Soon to return to independent, private ownership, the ultra-exclusive luxury supercar brand is ramping up production of its new C8 Aileron with customer deliveries beginning in April. And its Spyker Squadron race division will return to competitive endurance racing in 2012 season with an all-new GT car. Private, independent ownership On 24 February 2011, CPP Global Holdings Ltd – a British coachbuilding specialist - signed a Memorandum of Understanding to acquire the assets of the Spyker sportscar business from Spyker Cars N.V., the EURONEXT-listed holding company which currently operates the Spyker and Saab premium automotive brands. Press Release OCTOBER 06, 2013 Podium lock out for Renault power in Korean Grand Prix Sebastian Vettel wins Korean Grand Prix for Infiniti Red Bull RacingRenault, four seconds ahead of Kimi Raikkonen. Lotus F1 Team’s Kimi Raikkonen and Romain Grosjean finish second and third to make podium 100% Renault powered. Third allRenault powered podium this season. Vettel has led 209 of the past 213 racing laps. Vettel’s win gives him a mathematical chance to seal championship in Japan. Renaultpowered drivers locked out the podium in today’s Korean Grand Prix, with Sebastian Vettel (Infiniti Red Bull Racing) winning the chaotic race from Lotus F1 Team’s Kimi Raikkonen and Romain Grosjean. The perfect podium result is the third time this season that the podium has been 100% Renaultpowered.* Vettel – whose pole position yesterday took Renault’s total of F1 poles to 208, equal with Ferrari’s record – opened up a comfortable lead at the start ahead of Grosjean, who had jumped ahead of Hamilton on the first corner. The pair built up a cushion of several seconds over the battles behind and were able to pit and rejoin in formation. Vettel remained in front despite two different safety cars but Raikkonen got the jump on Grosjean before the second safety car period. The Finn had a standout race from P9 on the grid, overtaking Rosberg, Hamilton, Alonso, Hulkenberg and finally his teammate to score his second consecutive podium. Mark Webber started from P13 as a result of a grid penalty but quickly found himself into the top ten racing with Alonso and Raikkonen. -

Bernie Ecclestone
F1 People – Bernie Ecclestone Welcome to F1 People, a Sidepodcast series giving you an insight into the names that have shaped Formula 1. This is by no means a definitive list. In this first series, we’ll feature seven significant figures, starting with Bernard Charles Ecclestone. Bernie Ecclestone was born on October 28th 1930, in a small village in Suffolk, and brought up in Bexleyheath, Kent. He left school at 16 to work in the local gasworks as an assistant, so he could pursue his passion of motorcycles. After the end of World War II, Ecclestone began to trade motorcycle parts, and formed a dealership with Fred Compton. He had a go at racing, taking part in the Formula 3 500cc series, but a couple of accidents made him rethink his plans, and he returned to the business world. He bought out Compton, and turned the motorcycle business into a growing emporium, including auctions, loans and property deals. In 1957, Ecclestone became the manager of Stuart Lewis‐Evans, a racing driver from Wales. Ecclestone bought the F1 team Connaught to give Lewis‐Evans a drive, along with a couple of other promising drivers. He even had a go himself at the 1958 Monaco Grand Prix but did not get past qualifying. Bernie left the sport again, but returned in 1968 and 69 to manage Jochen Rindt in the Lotus. In 1972, he bought the Brabham team and put all his efforts into making it a winning constructor. The team cost him £100,000. He gradually made Brabham more and more competitive through the 1970s and well into the 1980s, but by then, other concerns were taking up his attention.
