:DOWHU%HUFKWROG&KLHI([HFXWLYH2IƟFHU3ULYDWH%DQNLQJ&UHGLW6XLVVH Foto: Credit Suisse Foto: Legendär. • 10 Years of BMW F1 Engines Abstract
    - 1 - Prof. Dr.-Ing. Mario Theissen, Dipl.-Ing. Markus Duesmann, Dipl.-Ing. Jan Hartmann, Dipl.-Ing. Matthias Klietz, Dipl.-Ing. Ulrich Schulz BMW Group, Munich 10 Years of BMW F1 Engines Abstract BMW engines gave the company a presence in Formula One from 2000 to 2009. The overall project can be broken down into a preparatory phase, its years as an engine supplier to the Williams team, and a period competing under the banner of its own BMW Sauber F1 Team. The conception, design and deployment of the engines were defined by the Formula One regulations, which were subject to change virtually every year. Reducing costs was the principal aim of these revisions. Development expenditure was scaled down gradually as a result of the technical restrictions imposed on the teams and finally through homologation and a freeze on development. Engine build costs were limited by the increased mileage required of each engine and the restrictions on testing. A lower number of engines were therefore required for each season. A second aim, reduced engine output, was achieved with the switch from 3.0-litre V10 engines to 2.4-litre V8s for the 2006 season. In the early years of its involvement in F1, BMW developed and built a new engine for each season amid a high-pressure competitive environment. This process saw rapid improvements made in engine output and weight, and the BMW powerplant soon attained benchmark status in F1. In recent years, development work focused on raising mileage capability and reliability without changing the engine concept itself. The P86/9 of the 2009 season achieved the same engine output, despite a 20% reduction in displacement, of the E41/4 introduced at the beginning of the 2000 season.

  • BMW Sauber F1 Team Claimed Its Eleventh Podium of the 2008 Season
BMW Sauber F1Team Japanese Grand Prix – Race, Sunday – 12.10.08 Weather: Dry but overcast, Air: 16-17°C, Track: 21-22°C Fuji (JP). In the Japanese Grand Prix the BMW Sauber F1 Team claimed its eleventh podium of the 2008 season. Robert Kubica finished second in Fuji, coming from sixth on the grid. It is the seventh podium for the Pole this year and his third second place. Nick Heidfeld, who started from 16th, improved to tenth in the dramatic race, which saw the championship contenders dropping back right after the start. In the Constructors’ Championship the BMW Sauber F1 Team is third, 13 points behind leader Ferrari. Robert Kubica: 2nd BMW Sauber F1.08-05 / BMW P86/8 Fastest Lap: 1:19.292 min on lap 16 (7th fastest overall) “My start was good but the clutch slipped a little, therefore Jarno Trulli was able to pass me on the straight. I then decided to take the inside line and braked very late, too late actually and I locked the front wheels. But then everybody went wide while I was more or less able to keep my line, and after the second corner I was in front. I then tried to pull away, but I couldn’t. My tyres were graining and I lost time, particularly in the last sector. I was pushing as hard as I could, but after the pit stop, Fernando Alonso was in front of me and I was not able to match his pace. At the beginning of the final stint the tyres were graining heavily and my lap times were slow, so I came under strong pressure from Kimi Räikkönen and we had a great fight.

  • European Grand Prix - Race Round-Up
29 May 2005 PANASONIC TOYOTA RACING: EUROPEAN GRAND PRIX - RACE ROUND-UP A difficult afternoon's work at the European Grand Prix saw Panasonic Toyota Racing's Jarno Trulli pick up a point for 8th place. Trulli made a strong start to be up to third early on but a drive through penalty earned for a starting grid infringement by the team dropped him down the order. A gritty drive from there ensured that the Italian secured another points finish. Ralf Schumacher had an even harder race after he became involved in a first corner clash and had to pit for a new nose. He was battling up through the field when he spun shortly after half distance. After a successful evening of haute cuisine by German chef Johann Lafer on Saturday this result was slightly harder to swallow but it keeps Toyota in 3rd place in the constructors' championship on 44 points. EURO FIGHTER Jarno Trulli battled all day to bring his car home in 8th place finish, enough to keep him in the top three of the drivers' championship on 27 points. It could have been more but for an early drive through penalty for an infringement on the grid that dropped him down the order. Jarno Trulli (Car 16, Chassis TF105/02) Race Classification: 8th Gap: +71.091s (from race winner) Qualifying Classification: 4th Time: 1m 30.700s (+0.617s) Grid: 4th "After an afternoon like that, a point is certainly better than nothing, but it could have been much more. Unfortunately we had a problem firing up the engine on the grid and because of those few seconds we earned a drive through penalty that completely spoiled my chances.

22 May 2005 PANASONIC TOYOTA RACING: MONACO GRAND PRIX - RACE ROUND-UP Panasonic Toyota Racing's Ralf Schumacher was delighted after he went from the back of the field to take 6th place at an incident-strewn Monaco Grand Prix. Ralf passed a number of cars before taking advantage of a hectic day to take three points. Team-mate Jarno Trulli had an even more eventful afternoon, running as high as 2nd for a long period before dropping back after an audacious passing manoeuvre at the Loews hairpin. He eventually finished 10th. Ralf's points keep Toyota in the top three of the constructors' championship on 43 points. PASS AT THE PORT Ralf Schumacher had the most difficult job of all today after starting from the back. But he made up four places in the early laps before moving further up during the safety car period. He ended up fending off the two Ferraris on his way to three points for 6th place. It was a great effort and the car went through the whole race so I'm really happy about that. It's a pity about what happened on Saturday because I could have ended up with even more points, but I had a very good day today. In the early laps I passed a few slower cars into Mirabeau, then I was held up in traffic.

Advanced Materials & Processes® Web Exclusive Copyright © 2008 ASM International® November 2008 All rights reserved. DOI: 10.1361/amp1108bmw www.asminternational.org This article was the basis for Materials in the BMW Sauber Formula 1 Race Car, which appeared in the November 2008 issue of Advanced Materials & Processes. This is the original manuscript submitted by the authors. It contains much more information than was possible to include in the magazine. Materials in the BMW Sauber Formula 1 Race Car BMW Team Zurich, Switzerland The F1 regulations inevitably play a central role in the construction of a new car. The two key changes to the rulebook for 2008 were the introduction of a standard electronics unit (SECU) and the new running time stipulation for the gearbox, which is now required to survive four consecutive grands prix. The development of the chassis was particularly hard hit by the incorporation of the SECU, with the traction control and engine braking control systems among the casualties of the new standard unit. This had the effect of making the car considerably more nervous under acceleration and braking. In order to counteract the loss of traction control as far as possible, the engineers focused particular attention on improving mechanical grip. The concept phase got underway in May. “The scheduling looked after itself really, as we wanted to evaluate the data from the first few races of the season before getting down to work on the design of the new car,” says Rampf. Among the areas of the car decided on at this point were the position of the engine, the length of the gearbox, the wheelbase, weight distribution, tank size and suspension concept.
