Feet Up Friday – There aren’t enough bobbleheads in the world Christine: We’ve just had two back-to-back races and now we’ve got back-to-back Feet up Friday’s, this almost never happens anymore. Mr C: It feels like we are underway, the season is go and it’s been non-stop from the first green flag of the year. This is the first break we’ve had, a little bit of downtime for Sidepodcast, but still we are recording a new show for you, that’s how hard we are working this year. Christine: But after two races in a row we’ve got three weeks off now and then there’s another two races and then there’s another three weeks off, it’s just weird scheduling this calendar. Mr C: It’s a crazy calendar, but it makes sense for the people who have to endure it. If you are a Formula 1 team who has to pay personnel to go off overseas, back-to-back races makes a lot of sense. You can cram in a lot of action, you can cram in a lot of racing in a fortnight, and then you can get back to base and save yourself a lot of money and in these troubled economic times, that is essential, so you can’t hold in against… you cannot hold the calendar against the people who have to go out there and live it. Christine: No. And having three weeks off gives us plenty of time to ponder everything that happened in Malaysia because my goodness that was a controversial race. -

F1 Advent Calendar 2012 (Day 15) – Ten for twelve Hello and welcome to the F1 Advent Calendar 2012. This is our mini series taking a look at the highs and lows of the season Just gone, the key moments that made it a pretty incredible year. Today we are moving towards the rear of the grid where an intense battle was playing out. This is Day Fifteen - Ten for twelve. The talk from Caterham ahead of the 2012 season was all about moving forward and away from the other new teams they started their time in Formula One with. Two tenth place season finishes in a row had seen them with a cash inJection, and the hope was for them to take a leap forward and start scoring points. The double retirement in Australia wasn’t exactly the start they were looking for, but a 13th place in Mon- aco for Kovalainen and a similar result in Valencia for Petrov meant the team were keeping a comfortable hold on their tenth place. Then came the Singapore Grand Prix. Lewis Hamilton put in a pretty fabulous lap to secure pole position on the Saturday, whilst all eyes were on the Williams pair. Pastor Maldonado was proving his pace in the car by hauling the Williams up to second place on the grid, whilst Bruno Senna crashed out in second qualify- ing, finding his way towards one of those pesky walls. The Ferrari drivers were split, with Fernando Alonso up in fifth, and Felipe Massa in thirteenth. Lining up on the front row of the grid, after a minute of silence paying tribute to Sid Watkins, Hamilton pre- pared for the lights to go out and the race to begin. -

F1 Debrief – You must drink Christine: This is F1 Debrief, You Must Drink. On this show we discuss ditching the water supply, the merits of being short and what could force the FIA’s hand. The subject we have to talk about today is, well it’s a bit of a weighty issue. Mr C: A huge issue, we’re talking driver weight, or lack thereof. Christine: It’s been going on for a while but it seems to have really, really hit the consciousness of the paddock and fans this particular week, this back-to-back races. Mr C: News came out during the Malaysian Grand Prix, I think Martin Brundle mentioned that. Christine: It really wasn’t news, it was Martin Brundle stirring is what it was. Mr C: He mentioned it in passing. Christine: A driver who will remain nameless… Mr C: Yes, passed out at a PR event in Malaysia. Possibly due to the humidity experienced in that climate. That was followed swiftly by Adrian Sutil mentioning this week that he is intending to race without a drinks bottle in Bahrain. I think he did use it in Malaysia which is an exceptionally hot race but during the upcoming Grand Prix he is deciding to save as much weight as he can and thereby potentially putting his own health at risk. Christine: Yeah, well the Sauber is a heavy car and Sutil isn’t one of the lightest drivers. Mr C: He’s a tall guy. Christine: He’s a tall guy, he’s one of the heaviest drivers on the grid and this year weight is everything. -

1990 JAGUAR TWR XJR-11 D E T A I L S Year: 1990 Conguration: RHD Engine: 3500 cc Price: SOLD D E S C R I P T I O N 1990 Jaguar XJR-11 Chassis 490 This important Jaguar is one of just three XJR-11 World Sportscar Prototype Championship cars and the most successful example. Despite dominating the 1988 World Championship and winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans, it was becoming clear that the normally aspirated V12-engined TWR Jaguars were gradually losing competitiveness, especially in view of the shorter sprint events that FISA were introducing. Cars powered by the latest turbocharged engines, which were lighter and more compact, were gaining the upper hand and in response TWR JaguarSport (a collaboration of Walkinshaw's TWR and Jaguar) started the development of a purpose-built V6 engine for the 1989 season. The design allowed for two variants; a 3-litre engine for the American IMSA series and a 3.5 litre Group C specication for the World Championship. To accommodate the more compact dimensions of the new V6, JaguarSport's Tony Southgate also designed an all- new chassis, which would be known as the XJR-10 for the IMSA series and the XJR11 for the Group C entries. The new engine was a thoroughly modern V6 with twin overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder. Of all-aluminium construction it weighed just 143 kg and was tted with two Garrett turbochargers, which boosted the power to around 750 bhp in the 3.5 Litre Group C specication engines. -

The GTE category already boasts Ferrari, Porsche, Aston Martin, Corvette and Chrysler’s Viper. F1 Advent Calendar 2012 (Day 2) – Melbourne masterclass Hello, thank you for Joining me for the second episode of the F1 Advent Calendar 2012. We’ve already be- gun our Journey through the key moments of the season Just gone, with a review of the early testing. Now it’s time for the racing to get going, so let’s get to it with Day Two - Melbourne masterclass. We know by now that Australia tends to deliver a chaotic and unpredictable race - one that doesn’t neces- sarily foreshadow how the season will play out, but kicks things off in style. The 2012 race did not let us down, starting with an intriguing qualifying session. The McLaren team were on form, with Lewis Hamilton pipping teammate Jenson Button to pole position. Behind them, a surprising Romain GrosJean showed yet more pace from Lotus. The Red Bull pair were fifth and sixth with Mark Webber ahead, whilst the Ferrari duo struggled considerably - both unable to get into the top ten. Sergio Pérez fell foul to an early gearbox penalty, dropping five places, whilst both HRT drivers failed to complete laps within the 107% time required. We’ve seen the FIA be lenient with the slower teams before, but as HRT hadn’t managed much running in the practice sessions, and were clearly not on the pace, they deemed them not ready to participate in the Grand Prix. It was a sunny evening in Melbourne when the drivers lined up on the grid for this first race. Jenson Button managed to scamper past Hamilton off the line, taking a very early lead and never looking back.
