2 A MESSAGE FROM CHAIRMAN JENNIFER W. STEANS AND PRESIDENT AND CEO WELZ KAUFFMAN
We don’t typically begin our annual message by quoting someone for performances throughout the summer. RSMI also celebrated with else, but who better to sum up Ravinia’s 2019 season than the man its first composition competition, Bridges, fusing jazz and chamber of the hour—or year—himself, Leonard Bernstein. “I can’t live one music. 3 Ravinia was proud to work with the Bernstein Office to be major part of the official “Leonard Bernstein at 100,” a two-year celebration of America’s most influential music maker that featured more than 1,000 performances on six continents. The concerts at Ravinia—curated by Bernstein’s final protégé (and the only woman), Marin Alsop—honored the man and the legend as father, conductor, composer, activist, and teacher. In addition to Bernstein’s own music, such as the rarely performed music theater piece Mass, Ravinia featured several concerts of music from composers championed by Bernstein, especially Mahler, whom Bernstein firmly placed in the classical canon.
4 The celebration was also embraced by Ravinia’s Steans Music Institute (RSMI) and Reach Teach Play education programs, who performed Bernstein’s music. Bernstein was the summer’s major resident on all three Ravinia stages, the Pavilion, Martin Theatre, and Bennett Gordon Hall. Ravinia’s 2018 season included the 1954 five-movement concerto for solo violin, strings, and percussion Serenade (after Plato’s Symposium); his first symphony, 1942’s “Jeremiah”; and the CSO premiere of Slava! A Political Overture.
Alsop will return in 2019 as the celebration continues with a reprise of Mass, by popular demand, and the 1952 one-act chamber opera Trouble in Tahiti, for which Bernstein wrote the libretto about not-so-blissful life in suburbia (which mentions Ravinia’s hometown of Highland Park by name), among other major works.
