• to present performances of a full range of in its open-air Pavilion and enclosed recital halls by the world’s greatest composers and musicians, along with a variety of other kinds of RAVINIA light classical, and popular music; • to maintain a beautiful park that is welcoming to all and attractive MISSION to families in which the music experience is enhanced by a beautiful STATEMENT environment and excellent dining opportunities; • to enable gifted young performers to study under great teachers and perform in concert settings; and

• to develop broader and more diverse audiences for classical music through education and outreach programs and by maintaining affordable ticket prices.

2 A MESSAGE FROM CHAIRMAN JENNIFER W. STEANS AND PRESIDENT AND CEO WELZ KAUFFMAN

We don’t typically begin our annual message by quoting someone for performances throughout the summer. RSMI also celebrated with else, but who better to sum up Ravinia’s 2019 season than the man its first composition competition, Bridges, fusing jazz and chamber of the hour—or year—himself, Leonard Bernstein. “I can’t live one music. It was so successful that we’re now accepting entries for a day without hearing music, playing it, studying it, or thinking about second annual competition at Ravinia.org. it,” he said. This could almost be Ravinia’s vision statement as we stack up 100 days of summer with gratifying performances by the While programmers love an anniversary, Ravinia has its sights brightest lights across all musical genres for all walks of life before firmly on the future too. That future includes ever-broadening going back to school in the fall with our Reach Teach Play education diversity onstage and in the audience, as well as reflected in programs. Ravinia’s leadership. In addition to featuring divalicious debuts by Mary J. Blige and Jill Scott with The Roots, where else might Equally apt, Bernstein said, “To achieve great things, two things you find Sir James Galway, , and 50 Cent just days are needed: a plan and not quite enough time.” Much is made of apart on a stage that also saw both Roger Daltrey re-creating The the short rehearsal time accorded summer festivals, but that does Who’s seminal Tommy and the young Jacob Collier and Lindsey not inhibit our great guests, such as Marin Alsop, who curated Stirling demonstrating why they’re social media superstars? Alsop not only informed this season, but she infused it with her Ravinia’s expansive schedule of 140 different events in the course mentor’s spirit. Where else could this happen? Spurred by popular and Ravinia was financially strong, too, in 2018, exceeding goals for both critical acclaim and by notes of regret from music lovers who missed earned and contributed income. Of course, neither our artistic or it, we’ve already let Ravinia donors know that we will bring back fiscal strength would be possible without the 7,000 donors and three Mass under the masterful Marin Alsop next summer as we continue all-volunteer groups—the Ravinia Trustees, Women’s Board, and our exploration and celebration of Bernstein as artist, activist, and Associates Board—who keep the not-for-profit vibrant and exciting. advocate. 3 Ravinia was proud to work with the Bernstein Office to be major part of the official “Leonard Bernstein at 100,” a two-year celebration of America’s most influential music maker that featured more than 1,000 performances on six continents. The concerts at Ravinia—curated by Bernstein’s final protégé (and the only woman), Marin Alsop—honored the man and the legend as father, conductor, composer, activist, and teacher. In addition to Bernstein’s own music, such as the rarely performed music theater piece Mass, Ravinia featured several concerts of music from composers championed by Bernstein, especially Mahler, whom Bernstein firmly placed in the classical canon.

4 The celebration was also embraced by Ravinia’s Steans Music Institute (RSMI) and Reach Teach Play education programs, who performed Bernstein’s music. Bernstein was the summer’s major resident on all three Ravinia stages, the Pavilion, Martin Theatre, and Bennett Gordon Hall. Ravinia’s 2018 season included the 1954 five-movement concerto for solo violin, strings, and percussion Serenade (after Plato’s Symposium); his first symphony, 1942’s “Jeremiah”; and the CSO premiere of Slava! A Political Overture.

Alsop will return in 2019 as the celebration continues with a reprise of Mass, by popular demand, and the 1952 one-act chamber Trouble in Tahiti, for which Bernstein wrote the libretto about not-so-blissful life in suburbia (which mentions Ravinia’s hometown of Highland Park by name), among other major works.

CINCO DE MAYO CONSIDERING MATTHEW SHEPARD TALKBACK

CONSIDERING MATTHEW SHEPARD 13 FAVORITES PHOTOGRAPHER

With the 2018 season mostly memories at this point, Ravinia’s photographers, who documented events all summer, have selected their favorite images of 2018 and explain why they picked their favorites, including performance shots, audiences enjoying themselves, and more than a few surprises. PATRICK GIPSON

The north lawn is packed with patrons enjoying the Chicago Symphony Orchestra

performing the score of E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial while also drinking in the movie in real time. In this photo, I fell in love with the contrast of the warm screen and the light it projected on patrons versus the cool colors of the summer evening sky.

Love was in the air—I met many new and familiar faces in the park this season, and honestly I had a hard time choosing who I wanted to feature. This couple had just posed for me in a classic smile-at-the-camera–type pose, and when they thought I was finished, the gentlemen let his guard down and embraced his girlfriend. That was the decisive moment I was looking to capture, and luckily this time I was able to immortalize the beautiful moment.

Leonard Bernstein’s Mass—this was one of those productions that we had been preparing forever, or at least it seemed so. To say the scale of this was intense is an understatement. Captured here is the meltdown of Paulo Szot’s character in Bernstein’s Mass. As a photographer, I often say it is not what I put in the frame that matters, but what I leave out that tells the story. In this case, what I left out was only because of the enormous stage setup and not because it changed the story. Not pictured is the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, maestro Marin Alsop, and all the creative staff that worked night and day to make this production astonishing. My sincere respect to all that were involved in the production of Mass, Leonard Bernstein, and everyone who attended.

14 KYLE DUNLEAVY

Ravinia Jazz Scholars at Jazz Showcase: Having never been to the Jazz Showcase, it was awesome to shoot with the Jazz Scholars. It provides the best backdrop for the kids. This shot was actually the last photo I took of the evening.

Gala Drone Shot: This is my favorite shot because this is the first year we were able to capture the full tent from this perspective. It was a last-minute idea to take the shot, and I think it turned out awesome.

1812 Cannons: Shooting the cannons is usually challenging, but shooting them at night was even more so, just to get the right exposure and to decide what the exposure of the explosion will be. The smoke disappeared pretty quick after this shot, but managing to catch the cannon right in the center was probably the best shot of the night.

15 JULIA REYES

I worked very closely with Ravinia’s Steans Music Institute this summer. I was able to capture many great moments between the fellows and their coaches. Miriam Fried performed a solo with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra on July 22 with all of her Piano & Strings Program fellows enjoying from the audience.

Enjoying a show in the Pavilion is such a unique experience that is hard to put into words. Capturing moments like this gives a better understanding of how special it is to attend a concert at Ravinia.

Matt Nathanson brought so much life and energy to the park on September 2. Nathanson connected with the audience the moment he stepped on stage, bringing everyone onto their feet. It was a pleasure capturing moments like this.

16 RUSSELL JENKINS

A playful story unfolds from this seemingly realistic pampering of E.T. the extra-terrestrial. It makes me smile every time—just thinking about a famous alien indulging in the “Ravinia Suite” at the Renaissance North Shore Chicago hotel. Room service? More Reese’s Pieces please.

Our new Lawn Bar, with indoor and outdoor seating, glows with colorful appeal. Postured at the helm with a smirk is a mixologist waiting to please. I parallel the variety of colors and textures with what interesting and delicious concoction might be mixed into a glass for me. Further, I like how it feels encouraging to belly-up to one of the bars. A “Russell,” please. (Vodka, ginger ale and a quarter lime.) I am sort of a mule.

Sugarland was electric, there is no question about it. From stage presence to sumptuous chords and voices, this duo was as bold as the reds they painted their performance with. No single photo could capture what I felt was one of the most moving performances in my 13 years at Ravinia—but this will have to do— because I’m already hearing them in my head. All I want to do ooo ooo ooo oooooo…

In addition to their 12 concerts and three master classes in Ravinia’s Bennett Gordon Hall, fellows also had the opportunity to participate in several community performances, including two Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concerts at the Chicago R S I R

ANNIVERSARY Cultural Center in downtown Chicago (broadcast live on WFMT), as well as dates at the Merit

t School of Music, North Shore Congregation Israel in Glencoe, Metropolis Performing Art Center in Arlington Heights, and Barrington’s White House. Composer Timo Andres joined RSMI’s distinguished faculty in mid-July to workshop and present the world premiere of his Piano Trio, commissioned in honor of RSMI’s 30th anniversary. All enjoyed a Women’s Board–hosted outing to downtown Chicago for an architectural boat tour on the Chicago River and a visit to the Art Institute, as well as a well-deserved afternoon of barbeque and poolside relaxation at the home of Lois and Harrison Steans.

PROGRAM FOR SINGERS RSMI’s 14 Program for Singers fellows had a special addition to their ranks this summer: RSMI’s first apprentice singer, soprano Caroline Bourg. Only 19 years old, Caroline, an Aurora, IL, native, had the opportunity to observe her colleagues’ coaching sessions, work with the distinguished faculty, and even perform with RSMI’s first apprentice collaborative pianist, Yu-Jhen Liu. This summer’s Program for Singers offered three concerts curated by faculty: Javier Arrebola, the head of the collaborative pianists, brought an eager audience classic canciones of Spain and Latin America; dramaturg Cori Ellison devised a moving collection of works on the theme of World War I armistice; and in honor of Leonard Bernstein’s centennial, the season closed with a program of “Bernstein and Friends,” featuring selections of his concert and theatrical songs, from Candide to West Side Story. Baritone Thomas Hampson and maestro James Conlon each conducted public master classes, livestreamed on Ravinia’s YouTube channel and garnering thousands of views across the US and internationally. Between rehearsals and performances, the fellows and collaborative pianists were able to enjoy their own Women’s Board–hosted outing to downtown Chicago, as well as a beautiful garden party luncheon at the Lake Forest home of Susan Ipsen.

56 BRIDGES & PROGRAM FOR JAZZ The celebration of RSMI’s 30th anniversary kicked off on June 9, in the Martin Theatre with the Bridges concert. The result of an off-season composition competition, submissions sought to bridge the genres of jazz and classical music. Many RSMI alumni were invited back to perform on the concert, and two Program for Jazz alumni were among the three prizewinning composers. The concert was a true celebration of RSMI past and present. At the post-concert reception held at Ravinia’s Lawn Bar, David Baker was posthumously presented the Edward Gordon Award, celebrating his service to Ravinia, the Steans Music Institute, and the world of jazz. Accepting on David’s behalf was his wife, Lida Baker. Also in attendance was Linda Moody, wife of the late James Moody, who served on the Program for Jazz faculty, and Ursula and Pierre Davis, wife and son of the late Nathan Davis, who served on the Program for Jazz faculty and was a co-director of the program until his death in early April. Nathan was also honored during the concert with a performance of his cello sonata Matryoshka , played by his dear friend Misha Quint.

RSMI’s 15 Program for Jazz fellows attended the Bridges concert and reception before the departure of the winners and participating artists, including guest faculty member, saxophonist Jimmy Greene. Program Directors Billy Childs and Rufus Reid were joined by trumpeter Tim Hagans for the weeklong Program for Jazz, holding a joint master class with the fellows and coaching three jazz combos as they prepared their original compositions for the final Jazz Grandstand performance on June 15, played to a packed house in Bennett Gordon Hall.

The second annual Bridges composition competition has already begun accepting submissions and will again name up to three winners in March 2019.

For its 2018 season poster competition, the Ravinia Women’s Board requested submissions reflecting the theme “Bernstein at 100” in honor of the centenary celebration of composer, conductor, and educator Leonard Bernstein. The winning design came from Michael Braley of Braley Design in Lexington, KY, who received a $1,000 cash prize and had his design featured in the promotion of Ravinia’s 2018 season, distributed among hundreds of Chicagoland stores and public spaces, and sold exclusively at The Ravinia Festival Shop. Prior to moving to Lexington, Braley worked in San Francisco and New York, and he had visited Ravinia many years ago and knew it was a very special place. According to Braley, “the poster is a typographic tapestry reflecting the depth, complexity, and vibrance of Bernstein’s work as well as capturing the spirit and joy of Ravinia itself.” 61 EXPERIENCE SOMETHING NEW
