The celebration of the America’s most important musician, which kicked off last summer with his centennial, earned Ravinia President and CEO Welz Kauffman “Chicagoan of the Year” recognition from the for his programming. The celebration continued in 2019, again curated by 101 conductor Marin Alsop, Bernstein’s final—and only female—protégé. Ravinia celebrated Bernstein the artist, activist, and advocate through his music and the composers he championed in all three of its concert venues, the Pavilion, Martin Theatre, and Bennett Gordon Hall, plus an exciting fourth venue, the newly constructed RaviniaMusicBox Experience Center. The Associates Board Gallery was the first part of the center, which is opening in phases, premiered this summer with the Grammy Museum’s traveling exhibit on the Leonard Bernstein Centennial. It featured such invaluable mementos as the composer’s childhood piano and the desk where he wrote West Side Story. At the start of the 2020 season, we will celebrate the grand opening of the entire RaviniaMusicBox with the premiere of an immersive exhibit in our small-space theater that will demonstrate the value and social power of music through the lens of Bernstein, capitalizing on his legacy as “America’s music teacher.” At the same time, the Associates Board Gallery will feature a new Bernstein exhibition from the National Museum of American Jewish History, featuring personal family objects and materials from his studio, including his own annotated copy of Romeo and Juliet, which he used to develop West Side Story. BERNSTEIN “We could think of no better way to open the RaviniaMusicBox Experience Center than through the eyes and art of a man whose own experience with music has been unmatched,” said Ravinia President and CEO Welz Kauffman. “Bernstein recognized the joy, intellectual spark, and spiritual awakening brought forth by music and wanted to make sure that generations to come experienced that, too.”

Central to the second year of our celebration was a command encore presentation of Bernstein’s rarely performed music theater work Mass, with Alsop leading the cast of 200 artists onstage, including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Children’s Choir, and Highland Park High School Marching Band; a chorus of “street” singers; and Paulo Szot reprising his rave-winning role as the Celebrant at the center of it all. The one-night-only performance was filmed for national broadcast on Great Performances this spring. Szot also returned to partner with Patricia Racette (star of Salome and Tosca at Ravinia) for another rarely performed Bernstein theater work, the 1951 one-act Trouble in Tahiti, a tragi-comic look at marriage in suburbia that calls out Ravinia’s hometown of Highland Park. Ravinia also presented its first full-length Candide, featuring its legendary overture and the beloved songs “Glitter and Be Gay” and “Make Our Garden Grow,” featuring The Knights, conducted by Eric Jacobsen.

Ravinia audiences cheered for what is perhaps Bernstein’s best- loved work, West Side Story, in all its Technicolor glory with the CSO performing that hit-filled score live to the fully restored Robert Wise film. The Bobby Sanabria Multiverse Big Band presented their Grammy-nominated West Side Story Reimagined as part of the annual Fiesta Ravinia celebration of Mexican culture. The CSO also performed Bernstein’s only dramatic film score, On the Waterfront, as the restored Elia Kazan classic was shown on giant screens in the Pavilion and on the Lawn.

Kauffman, Alsop, and her good friend Jamie Bernstein—Leonard’s oldest child, an artist in her own right and author of last year’s the runaway successful memoir Famous Father Girl—assembled an evening of symphony, songs, and stories that summoned the spirit and genius of Bernstein, in “Leonard Bernstein: Man for All Music.” Other Bernstein evenings included Copland’s El Salón México with Concert Dance Inc., Gershwin’s Concerto in F, Mahler’s “Symphony of a Thousand,” and his US Bicentennial Songfest, which set a dozen poems from such luminaries as Walt Whitman, Langston Hughes, Edgar Allan Poe, and Gertrude Stein to original music. The Poetry Foundation selected poets Kevin Coval, Jacob Saenz, and Patricia Frasier to read each poem before its song was performed by singers from Ravinia’s Steans Music Institute. Kauffman and RSMI alumna Michelle Areyzaga also visited many cultural institutions, such as Kohl Children’s Museum, to preview the artistry of Bernstein. Ravinia’s celebration aimed to showcase that artistry as expressed in Bernstein’s many guises—composer, father, teacher, activist, conductor, mentor, and advocate of other composers, such as Mahler. spacecraft to introduce us to us to introduce to spacecraft celebration—through his famous Fifth Symphony, Fifth Symphony, his famous celebration—through sent was that record golden the included on was which with Voyager 1977 the 1 Ravinia universe. in the each life provided intelligent famous the replicated that badge withstudent a brass golden record. entire The experienceits RaviniaMusicBox will have immersive- the unveil opening we in 2020, when grand experience 65-seat with a 4D presentation— theater designed geniuses BRC, behind by the creative the LibraryLincoln Museum, and Ryman the Experience, Kennedy Center— at Complex Space Visitors the and through the as told impact cultural music’s captures that story of Leonard Bernstein. * Executive Committee member The Ravinia Associates Board celebrated the 30th anniversary of its founding with this year’s Music Matters fundraising dinner, dance and auction on Saturday, May 11, at a new location, the Marriott Marquis, 2121 S. Prairie Ave., Chicago. Each year, the event celebrates a person or institution that has made a tremendous impact on music education, and this year that honor went to legendary flutist Sir James Galway.

The black-tie Music Matters event has been hailed as one of the most fun fundraisers on the social calendar, offering cocktails, dinner, dancing, raffle, live music and both a live and a silent auction. This year’s event grossed over $639,000 for Ravinia’s education programs, which serve 85,000 people in Cook and Lake Counties. 2019 MAGIC OF MUSIC GOLF BENEFIT golf and tennis. to lunch prior during Board Trustees of Ravinia the members of with performed Elementary Teach students Play from Acero Santiago golfersAmong and tennis players, the Reach each year.people educationPlay which programs, reach 85,000 forRaviniaReach andits the non-for-profit Teach over andwelcomed grossed $265,000 150guests The event golf benefit. addition to the longtime and featuredClub in tennis anew benefit wasMusic held on May Country 20at Exmoor of 2019 Magic BoardRavinia of Trustees’ The “I’ve always been conscious of what I put out into the universe. the out into I put of what conscious been always “I’ve and they children, have day I may one thought that always I’ve After kids proud. your to make want always this.
