5 Benny Goodman Tribute

The modern musical landscape of Ravinia owes much to a controversial artist debut 75 years ago—Benny Goodman. He put a spotlight on young, up-and-coming artists; he opened Ravinia’s doors to non-classical artists; and in a daring move for those days he brought the first black musicians to play at Ravinia in his integrated band. We celebrated each branch of that legacy with an all-day tribute to the “King of Swing,” kicked off by Ravinia’s Steans Music Institute Jazz Grandstand. After the Women’s Board dance contest on the lawn, dancers from Big City Swing (lindy) hopped onto the special Pavilion dance floor while the Chicago Jazz Orchestra headlined the evening with singers Cyrille Aimée and Sylvia McNair.

6 Clarinetists Eric Schneider, Anat Cohen and Larry Combs Tito Muñoz 8 Daniel Hope The Four Seasons Recomposed

Even the most beloved standards of the classical repertoire can take on an exciting new life. That much was proven when The Four Seasons Recomposed, already an exciting hit album, received its Midwest premiere at the hands of violinist Daniel Hope and the with conductor Tito Muñoz.

Before the concert Ravinia held a live video Q&A with Hope about the work, his career and his thoughts on music. See what he had to say!

9 Matchbox Twenty & Goo Goo Dolls

The result of a decade-long effort to elevate Ravinia’s non-classical concerts to the same quality as its peerless classical offerings, Matchbox Twenty and Goo Goo Dolls made their Ravinia debuts co-headling three concerts, the longest stop on their summer tour.

10 11 Matchbox Twenty Grant Gershon leads the massive forces behind The Gospel According to the Other Mary, including the Chicago Philharmonic Orchestra, the Los Angeles Master Chorale and soloists Russell Thomas, Tamara Mumford, Kelley O’Connor, Daniel Bubeck, Brian Cummings and Nathan Medley. The Gospel According to the Other Mary

Ravinia’s season of “Passions and Masterpieces” was capped with the Midwest premiere of The Gospel According to the Other Mary by John Adams, performed by its original cast and choir as it was in Paris, London, New York and Los Angeles. Chicago Tribune said “what a gripping, wrenching, ultimately moving achievement ‘The Other Mary’ is.”

13 Chicago Symphony Orchestra & Aida

Latonia Moore, Roberto Alagna and Michelle DeYoung (an alumna of Ravinia’s Steans Music Institute) headlined Ravinia’s concert presentation of Verdi’s Aida in honor of the composer’s bicentennial.

14 Michelle DeYoung, Latonia Moore, James Conlon, Roberto Alagna 16 Josh Groban JOSH GROBAN

17 Josh Groban $10 BGH CLASSICS SERIES

The $ BGH Classics series featured the Ravinia debut of pianist Benjamin Grosvenor and the return of audience favorites violinist and pianist Gabriela Montero during the summer. But the instantly acclaimed series has extended year-round and will feature concerts by Roomful of Teeth with the Pulitzer Prize-winning Partita for Eight Voices by Caroline Shaw; trumpeter Marquis Hill, an alumnus of both Ravinia’s Steans Music Institute and REACH*TEACH*PLAY jazz progams; and holiday performances by Boston Brass and Chicago Children’s Choir. The series takes advantage of the proximity of the Freehling Room to Bennett Gordon Hall by offering value-priced dinner packages catered by City Park Grill, a Highland Park favorite.

18 19 Rachel Barton Pine 20 The Lord of the Rings—The Two Towers CSO & The Two Towers

The Lord of the Rings saga continued with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra playing the score to The Two Towers while the film was shown on Pavilion and lawn screens.

25 CHICAGO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA SEASON WITH JAMES CONLON

James Conlon, music director of the CSO’s summer residency at Ravinia, led a season honoring the major anniversaries of Verdi, Wagner and Britten, as well as two all-Mozart evenings, Rossini overtures and other popular favorites, with guest soloists including Highland Park’s own Jorge Federico Osorio, James Ehnes, Gil Shaham and more.

26 The Chicago Symphony Orchestra, which has held its summer residency at Ravinia since 1936, takes its bows. 28 Yo-Yo Ma / Goat Rodeo Sessions The Goat Rodeo Sessions

30 31 Sting 32 Lang Lang GALA BENEFIT—CSO/LANG LANG/CONLON

Lang Lang took sole possession of the Gala stage that launched him to superstardom ‚ years ago. Following his performance of concertos by Beethoven and Prokofiev, he found another piano piece to enjoy—a specially designed piano dessert. Hosted by the Ravinia Women’s Board, the annual gala is the only performance fundraiser supporting Ravinia and its REACH*TEACH*PLAY education programs.

33 RACHMANINOFF’S “VESPERS”

Rachmaninoff’s choral masterpiece, the “Vespers,” was performed at Highland Park’s Trinity Episcopal Church and in the Martin Theatre by The Singers, led by Matthew Culloton.

34 35 The Singers 36 Bernstein’s Songfest Bernstein’s Songfest

With support by the Poetry Foundation, Ravinia presented a new chamber version of Bernstein’s American-centennial Songfest in its world premiere on the Fourth of July. The work was arranged by Alexander Platt and performed by Chicago’s Ensemble Dal Niente with singers from the Lyric’s Ryan Center. The poems on which each song was based were read by actors from Writers’ Theatre, one of Ravinia’s partners in the cultural consortium Do North.

37 The Little Match Girl Passion

One of 13 major premieres of the season, David Lang’s Pulitzer Prize- winning The Little Match Girl Passion was performed by the voices and hands of musical mavericks Grant Gershon, Elissa Johnston, Adriana Manfredi and Cedric Berry.

50 RAVINIA AND cSO RENEw cONTRAcT THROuGH 2018 Ravinia and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra have signed a five-year contract extending the orchestra’s six-week summer residency through 2018. “This latest agreement demonstrates a continuing commitment to build upon the success and strength of our historic relationship,” said Jay Henderson, chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association. “About 60 percent of Ravinia’s events are classical, and at the heart of those offerings is the residency of the world’s finest ensemble, the CSO,” added Robert D. Krebs, chairman of the Ravinia Festival Association. “The relationship between Ravinia and the CSO—maybe the longest musical marriage in classical music history—is an enviable one for arts organizations.” The CSO has long been associated with Ravinia, having first performed at the park in 1905 and serving as the orchestra for Ravinia Opera through 1931. The orchestra helped to inaugurate the first season under the Ravinia Festival banner in 1936 and has been in residence at the festival every summer since. 53 SCULPTING MEMORIES Sculpture has long been a part of Ravinia’s ethos, as has been sharing the memories of and honoring those that ensure the park remains an artistic gem, and this year two additions have been made to that tradition. The large bronze work Two Seated Figures I by internationally recognized artist Lynn Chadwick was added to the Bernbaum Sculpture Walk as a gift from the Avrum Gray family in memory of Joyce Gray. Near the refurbished south entrance to the park, two bronze sculptural benches designed by architect Charlie Kaplan were installed in memory of his father and grandfather, longtime Ravinia Trustees Burton and Morris Kaplan. These sculptures follow in the footsteps of last year’s installations created by Richard Hunt, who was commissioned for another work in commemoration of the ‡th anniversary of Ravinia’s Steans Music Institute, Piano Passion, which hangs in the newly refurbished lobby of the institute’s home, the John D. Harza Building. 54 Ravinia’s Director of Facilities Jim Schmitz leads the installation of the new Chadwick on the Bernbaum Sculpture Walk. 67 CSO SCHEDULE MAKES IT BIG Over the past several years, Ravinia has built up an in-park signage program to alert patrons to upcoming events, particularly classical music concerts. The latest addition to this signage became a “tourist attraction” of sorts this summer as guests posed for pictures in front of the ‡ƒ-by-ˆƒ-foot banner that promoted the season’s Chicago Symphony Orchestra programs. It was strategically hung on the back of the Martin Theatre above the original Ravinia Gifts shop. The banner touting the ‡ ‚ CSO “Summer of Love/Season of Stars” is already in place to call attention to such programs as the gala featuring violinist Joshua Bell, Patricia Racette’s fi rst Salome, and movie nights with West Side Story and the fi nal installment of The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Return of the King. 68 “TAKE FIVE” TAKES TO THE ROAD This fall, Welz Kauff man worked with a group of alumni and current Jazz Scholars on an arrangement of “Take Five,” made famous by the late, great Dave Brubeck. Originally intended for a surprise performance at the Kohl Children’s Museum Gala, the performance was so popular that the group performed several times for various events at Ravinia, a master class with Willie Pickens at UIC and televised on WCIU’s You and Me This Morning. The collaboration proved so eff ective that another selection has been commissioned for Welz and the Scholars to play in the spring, highlighting music of the upcoming Ravinia season. 75 IN MEMORIAM: JANE WEEDEN

Born on August ‡ , ¿, in Newton, KS, Jane Baird Weeden died August ‡¿, ‡ ˆ, at the age of ƒ. The daughter of William Walter and Ruth (Gilmore) Baird, she graduated from Washburn University with honors with a bachelor of music and obtained a master’s degree in piano performance and applied music from the Conservatory of Music in Kansas City, MO, where she trained under concert artist and conservatory director Dr. Wictor Labunski. She earned a second master’s in music education from Washburn. During and after WWII, she worked for the American Red Cross and was put in charge of recreational and music therapy for injured soldiers and prisoners of war at McClosky General Hospital in Temple, TX. While living in Kansas following her marriage, she became involved in local arts organizations, including the Kansas City Philharmonic, Lyric Opera of Kansas City, the Chamber Music Society and Kansas City Art Institute. After relocating to Topeka, she served on the boards of the Community Concert Association and Topeka Symphony League, and for over years was a member of the national and local music teachers associations. Upon completion of her graduate studies, she began a long career as a well-respected teacher of piano and theory to students at all levels and ages, and after her retirement in ‹‡ she taught piano full-time for more than ‡ consecutive years. She joined the Ravinia Women’s Board in ‡ and worked tirelessly to assist with pricing and inventory in the Ravinia Gifts warehouse, where her wit and humor greatly endeared her to her fellow “basement buddies.”

76 FLIPPING FOR cLASSIcAL The brochure each spring that heralds Ravinia’s upcoming season has long been one of the festival’s most important marketing and reference tools. A redesign in 2013 created great buzz about our classical off erings. One side of the brochure laid out the entire season in calendar format as it has in the past, but the second side boasted only classical events. Readers of the full schedule were urged to “fl ip” to fi nd greater details about Ravinia’s classical concerts, including complete programs and even quotes from reviews. The concept proved especially helpful in detailing the $10 BGH Classics series. The redesign, which more than doubled the profi le of classical music in the brochure, will be repeated in 2014 in the March brochure that will be mailed to 450,000 homes. IN MEMORIAM: JUNE PINSOF

June B. Pinsof (née Bild), a cherished member of the Ravinia family, passed away on February ‡‚ of this year. Born on July ‡ƒ, ‹, she was an Annual Fund supporter since ƒˆ. It was at the urging of her daughter, Madeleine P. Plonsker (an Annual Fund Committee member), that she became a concert sponsor in in recognition of their joint appreciation of Ravinia’s gift of music and dance. She ultimately sponsored eight Martin Theatre concerts, in addition to generously underwriting A Good Man, the critically acclaimed film documentary about the creation of Bill T. Jones’s Ravinia-commissioned dance-theater work, Fondly Do We Hope . . . Fervently Do We Pray. An aficionado of dance as well as chamber music, she was also a major supporter of Chicago’s , underwriting the first joint commission between Ravinia and the now-shuttered troupe. The work was reprised in her honor at the Ravinia’s Steans Music Institute (RSMI) ‡th anniversary celebration concert. She and her daughter both also contributed to the “Everything for the Artist” endowment campaign for RSMI, for which they are both recognized on the plaque displayed at the South Gate near the John D. Harza Building. June Pinsof is survived by two of her three children, six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
