He put a spotlight on young, up-and-coming artists; he opened Ravinia’s doors to non-classical artists; and in a daring move for those days he brought the first black musicians to play at Ravinia in his integrated band. We celebrated each branch of that legacy with an all-day tribute to the “King of Swing,” kicked off by Ravinia’s Steans Music Institute Jazz Grandstand.
