In 1636, he became the frst Laudian Professor of Arabic at Oxford. Before him, no regular teaching in Arabic was provided in England,1 and the Bodleian Library contained only a handful of Oriental manuscripts.2 Tere were no printed grammars or dictionaries worth the name, no native speakers to teach the lan- guage, and few printed books in Arabic.3 In this context, Pococke soon gained a considerable reputation in England and across Europe for raising the standards of orientalist scholarship and turning Oxford and its library into frst-rate institu- tions of orientalist learning. -

Seleznyov Institute for Oriental and Classical Studies Russian State University for the Humanities [email protected] THE LAMENTS OF THE PHILOSOPHERS OVER ALEXANDER THE GREAT ACCORDING TO THE BLESSED COMPENDIUM OF AL‐MAKĪN IBN AL‐ʿAMĪD The thirteenth‐century Christian Arabic historian Ğirğis al‐Makīn ibn al‐ʿAmīd — the author of the two‐volume universal history entitled The Blessed Compendium (al‐Mağmūʿ al‐mubārak) — was a rather para‐ doxical figure. Frequently defined as “a Coptic historian,”1 he was not a Copt, and even though his Blessed Compendium is well known not only in Eastern Christian and Muslim historiography, but also in Western scholarship since its inception, the first part of this historical work still remains unpublished. This first part, however, contains vast material that would undoubtedly interest scholars studying the intellectual heritage of the medieval Middle East. The following arti‐ cle deals with one section of al‐Makīn’s famous work. BALSAMON AND THE BASILICA I In the history of Byzantine law the Nomocanon of the Fourteen Titles occupies a prominent place. It belongs to a genre of legal literature that is typical of Byzantium. In that society where Church and State were inextricably bound up with one an other, there could be no question of a total separation of the legislative competences of the ecclesiastical and the secular arms, if such a division existed at all. Indeed, there was never any doubt that the Emperor had a say in the affairs of the Church. Small wonder, then, that the body of rules applicable to churches, monasteries, ec clesiastical organization, marriage, and so on, always consisted of both imperial laws, nomoi, and ecclesiastical canons, kanones. Hence the name to indicate a collection of such rules, nomokanon. Of this genre the Nomocanon of the Fourteen Titles is the most successful representative. It was first compiled in the early seventh century and was revised in the time of Photios, Patriarch of Constantinople at the end of the ninth century; in other words, about the time of the compilation of the Basilica. Our manuscripts usually contain this second recension, never the first; it is the text that was edited by Rhalles and Potles in 1852 and by Pitra in 1868.1 The term nomocanon can be used in two senses: in a wider sense it is applied to a collection of canons of Church Councils in chronological order, followed by a number of pronouncements by certain Fathers to which the Church had attributed the status of canons; but it is only the repertory preceding this kind of collection which can be called a nomocanon in the strict sense, as it alone contains, in addition to a conspectus of the canonical material under systematic headings, a citation of the nomoi relevant in each case. -

His anti-Latin stance has been associated with the fact that Balsamon was not allowed to take over his appointed see. The Syrian city was under Crusader rule and thus its patriarch was of Roman rite. Nevertheless, two references analysed in this paper demonstrate that his resentment towards the Latins was not only the result of his personal circumstances. The study of a brief treatise and a commen- tary shows that Balsamon witnessed the impact that the interaction between Byzantines and Latins had on the society of his period. As a consequence, Balsamon became an advocate of the Byzantine church and its traditions. UNDERSTANDING THE EASTERN CHRISTIAN CHURCHES John M. Samaha SM Introducing the Question When you think of the Church, what image comes to mind? What image do you think the average Catholic forms when the Church is mentioned? Usually the image is that of a highly centralized, worldwide institution with headquarters in Rome. Or, of one's neighbourhood parish church. All in the West who share the heritage of European civilization tend to identify the Catholic Church with the Latin Rite (Roman Rite). Similarly, Eastern Orthodox and other Eastern Christians may think of the church of their own country of origin with its chief bishop and centre in the ancient capital city. Seldom do we think of the church as the Mystical Body of Christ, the Head united with his many, diverse groups of members comprising the People of God. Attitudes among Eastern Catholic and Orthodox peoples not only stem from their strong national feelings, but are also deeply rooted in their ecclesiastical history and religious thought. For while the one, holy, catholic, arid apostolic Church founded by Jesus Christ is unified, the Church certainly is not uniform in all aspects. Basic Understandings To understand clearly the situation it is important to establish basic understanding of some fundamental points. In the context of studying the Church, a rite refers to a local Church or specific tradition, not to ceremony or ritual. A particular Church means a style or way of living Christianity, a cultural mentality toward practicing the Gospel, a community of faith with a distinct, ancient tradition. 18 John M. -
