Once restored the canvases have been placed in the Opera del Duomo Museum, as part of the “Galleria dei Modelli”, that houses the proposals for the realization of Duomo’s façade, sketches in wood realized by various artists from the late sixteenth century. his year we celebrate the 70th anniversary of the birth of the Italian Republic but not only. On June 2nd, 1946, the referendum called Italians in to choose between a monarchy and a republic and to elect the Constituent Assembly. Yet 1946 marked another historic event to democracy: women’s right to vote and Ttherefore universal suffrage. After the fall of fascism and the end of World War II, Italy finally turned the page. The first election date was for local elections; two thousand candidates were elected to the municipal councils, the majority from the left parties. The percentage of women participating in the vote was very high, 89%, thus disproving the negative predictions, dictated by the lack of confidence of some exponent politicians, on the interest Italian women would take on institutional issues. With the June referendum, the Italian Republic was born and twenty-one deputies were elected for the first time, out of five hundred and six members of the Constituent Assembly. Although women were present and very active in the struggle of resistance against Nazi-Fascism, (something like 35,000 partisans according to the PNA data and at least two million women involved in the partisan struggle), too little is spoken of them, leaving them absent from history even if they have accomplished extraordinary actions. Women from different social classes, different political views, and cultural backgrounds but with a shared civic passion and the belief that it was worth fighting for democracy and freedom. It is, therefore, important to emphasize, today, their strong contribution. The Italian Republic, born after the war, is the result of the courage and commitment of admirable men and of, not mentioning the times, the many women who were engaged in the first person and to which we owe our freedom. Courageous, intelligent and fearless women that not only actively participated in the resistance but have made their contribution in the drafting of the Constitution, in fact, five of them were elected to the Commissione dei Settantacinque (Commission of the Seventy-five) in charge of writing the new Constitution which entered into force on the 1st of January 1948, working to make sure it included and sanc- tioned women’s rights.
