Svima velika hvala, a čitateljima želim radost čitanja! This article argues that ethnicity can- not be understood if it is abstracted from concrete social practices, and that analyses of this construct need to be based on ethnographic observation and on the study of actual talk in interaction. This interactionally oriented per- spective is taken to present an analysis of how Italian ethnicity is constructed as a central element in the collective identity of an all-male card playing club. Linguistic strategies, particularly code-switching, are central in this con- struction, but their role becomes apparent only when language use is ana- lyzed within significant practices in the life of the club.

  • TRESSETTE in RUSSIA Franco Pratesi – 17.10.1993 RIASSUNTO
MAIN CHARACTERISTICS OF TRESSETTE The Origin The origin of Tressette still represents an open question. In Italy, it seems to have a Southern origin: the first document known to me is a 1631 law from Naples; several technical terms are also from Naples and Southern Italy. It cannot be excluded that the game arrived there from Spain (as known, large parts of Italy, and particularly the Southern ones, have been for several centuries under Spanish government or influence). However, we have no direct information about it from Spain. The Pack The game is played with the 40-card pack, which has been the commonest one in Italy for a long time. This pack seems to be of Spanish origin, even if the more traditional Spanish pack is the 48- card one, only lacking 9s. A few games exist which are or have been common in Italy with the 40- card pack and elsewhere with the 52-card one. However, when we find a variant of Tressette quoted abroad, it is always played with the 40-card pack. In this case, it is easier for us to recognise the game, even if under an unknown name, among various local variants. Differently from other exotic packs, this can easily be obtained by any standard 52-card pack (needed in the past everywhere for playing Whist, as now for Bridge): one has only to set aside the 10s, 9s, 8s, and obviously any joker.

AD: My name is Albert DeFazio Sr. I was born on January 14, 1925. JZ: Tell me a little bit about your family background. Who were the first to immigrate, did your parents come over from Italy? AD: Yes. My dad came over; he was single at the time. And after that my mother came from the same town as they did and she was living with her brother down there in the lower part of the Hill District. And of course they knew each other from the town in Italy. JZ: What town was that? AD: That was a town that was on top of a mountain outside of Naples, it was called Altavilla Irpina. But anyhow, my dad emigrated, he went to New York first and then he spent a little bit of time in Boston, and then he came back here to Verona, what year I don’t know. Then he had a brother he called for. He came over and he stayed on East Railroad Avenue too, in a house that my dad owned and he died as a young man. Then he met my mother and they got married on East Railroad Avenue in Verona and raised five children, four boys and one girl. The four boys are still here and I have a sister that’s in California.

Play is a vital aspect of human culture, and games, hobbies, and toys make it happen. It is no wonder then that this area of human activity can reveal a great deal about the social and cultural context in which it occurs. It always involves rituals that can be read at a “deep” level to throw light on the values and myths prevalent in the society in which it unfolds. Games can be categorized in many different ways. French anthropologist Roger Caillois divided them into four main categories: competition, chance, simulation, and disorientation. Competitive games involve training, skill, and discipline; games of chance largely depend on probability; simulation games require that the players escape from reality and become fantasy characters; and, finally, games of disorientation are based on a physical feeling of dizziness. If there is money or material gain involved, we are talking about gambling, which can contain traces of all four of these categories. [1] Hobbies, like games, are voluntary, uncertain, isolated in space and time, and bound by rules. Unlike games, however, hobbies such as handicrafts and collecting can be—and usually are—materially productive.

The late Lady Charlotte Schreiber formed during her lifetime an extensive collection of the Playing-Cards of various countries, and, dying in 1895, bequeathed the collection to the Trustees of the British Museum. In accordance with the terms of the legacy, all those items were retained which were not strictly duplicates of others already in the Museum, the remainder being returned to the executors. The portion retained constitutes a very important addition to the collection which previously belonged to the department.* The present separate catalogue of the addition to the national collection thus made by Lady C. Schreiber's bequest, has been prepared by Mr. F. M. O'Donoghue, Assistant-Keeper of Prints and Drawings in the Museum, and is published by the Trustees in accordance with an undertaking made on their behalf to the executors of the testatrix when her bequest was accepted. Among the most important items in the collection are, in the Italian section, Mitelli's tarocchino and "II Passa Tempo" packs; Fresehot's cards of Venetian Heraldry, 1707 ; and two interesting Ombre packs, probably executed in Venice, one hand-painted on plates of silver and enclosed in a silver case, the other engraved on brass plates and contained in a case of the same material.
