Getting Started with 100 Gardens An Overview of Our School Program

Who We Are Our Mission: Provide exciting and engaged learning opportunities by implementing aquaponics programs in schools, institutions and in communities of need.

What is Aquaponics? And Why? Today’s youth will be leading a world that by 2050 will have less freshwater, face the total depletion of major species, and have 10 billion people to feed. They need to have the awareness and the skills to succeed in that world.

Aquaponics is a method of farming that raises edible and vegetables together in a symbiotic environment. Fish create nutrients in the water through their waste, and vegetables use the nutrients to grow, returning clean water back to the fish. This allows the recycling and conserving of water, takes pressure off the oceans by farming fish, and grows fresh vegetables for an increasing human population.

The Ultimate Link Between Hands-On Learning and Environmental Stewardship Our Aquaponics Learning Labs bring unforgettable learning experiences to students and teachers. Our K-5 and high school curriculums intersect the operation of the aquaponics system with North Carolina Education Standards for science, math, and several Career and Technical Education (CTE) classes.

Unforgettable Experiences in the Aquaponics Learning Lab - A Quick Glance ● Water quality management and data analyzation ● Daily feeding of the fish and observing fish behavior ● Weighing fish and tracking fish growth ● Humane harvesting of fish, fish processing, and culinary preparation ● Weekly starting of seeds for plant production ● Weekly harvesting and selling of leafy green vegetables ● End of school year events where students share their experiences with community members

Our Services and How We Partner with Schools We are an educational 501c3 non-profit organization. For us to fulfill our mission, we seek long-term partnerships with our school partners. A partnership requires that both the school and 100 Gardens bring passion, commitment, and resources to the program.

Services Provided by 100 Gardens 1. Development of physical facilities for aquaponics learning: 100 Gardens facilitates the construction of aquaponics greenhouses and indoor growing labs. Working directly with the school, an aquaponics learning lab designed and built. The construction of a greenhouse is contracted to a local greenhouse builder and 100 Gardens installs the aquaponics system within the new facility using our staff, volunteers, and student interns. 2. Professional Development for Teachers: 100 Gardens trains teachers to implement aligned lesson plans (aligned with NC Education Standards) to allow for teachers to engage students in learning that inspires a new way of thinking about learning, food and the environment. 100 Gardens also supports teachers in the more hands-on lessons such as fish-handling by providing a staff member to lead the lesson as well as provide all the necessary supplies. 3. Pre and Post Surveys: In an effort to continuously improve our programming, we administer surveys to both teachers and students before and after the programming cycle for the school year. 4. Regular Harvesting and Distribution of Fresh Produce: Students regularly harvest fresh vegetables from the aquaponics system and engage in tastings, cooking demonstrations, donation of produce to shelters/food banks and sales to local restaurants. 5. End of Year Fish Fry: One of the goals of each school year is for every partner school to bring their fish to harvest size by the end of the school year. Once the fish are ready to harvest 100 Gardens will co-host a community fish fry with the school/institution to celebrate the achievement by students and to engage the community in conversations around education, food and the environment. Donations are solicited at the event to raise funds for the next school year’s programming. 6. Remote monitoring and service visits: 100 Gardens uses Google Forms for tracking aquaponics system performance. Each day students operating the system enter critical data into the Google Form that allows for 100 Gardens to monitor system performance remotely. Data is used by students to make decisions regarding system operation. Regular visits by 101 Gardens ensure that all mechanical parts are functioning properly and that there are no leaks. Schools choose a service plan based on their experience and needs.

Our Curriculum Our curriculum is a collaboration between experienced educators and the 100 Gardens team. We currently have (30) Lesson Plans for K-5 Science and (6) two-day lab activities for Earth and Environmental Science. All systems include our Standard Operating Procedures to guide successful operation.

K-5 Science Lesson Plans We have 5 lessons for each grade K-5. All five lessons are designed to be taught together as a one week module and each module is aligned with an Essential Standard for Science.

Earth and Environmental Science Lesson Plans We have (6) 2-day lab activities for Earth and Environmental Science, each lab aligns with an Essential Standard.

Day 1: Lesson focused on vocabulary and a Case Study to drive scientific comprehension. Day 2: Lab/ Experiment in the Greenhouse. This is a worksheet based lab report (Honors/ AP can differentiate by following up with a full lab report activity). Additional differentiation can be made for ELS, EC, and OCS students.
