This study evaluated if the culture of complementary ecological- function species can recover nutrients dispersed into the water and transform them into high-valued biomass. A completely randomized experiment was designed with three treatments and four replications of each production system: monoculture of lambari (Astyanax lacustris); integrated aquaculture of lambari and Amazon river prawn (Macrobrachium amazonicum); and integrated aquaculture of lambari, Amazon river prawn, and curimbatá (Prochilodus lineatus). Fingerlings of lambari (0.8 ± 0.8 g) were stocked in twelve earthen- ponds (0.015 ha) at the density of 50 fish m-2. Eight ponds, were stocked with juveniles of Amazon river prawn (1.1 ± 0.2 g) at the density of 25 prawn m−2. Four of these eight ponds were stocked with curimbatá fingerlings (0.2 ± 0.1 g) at a density of 13 fish m-². Only lambari was fed twice a day with an extruded commercial diet.

    Fishery Basics – Seafood Markets Types of Fishery Products Fish products are highly traded and valuable commodities around the world. Seafood products are high in unsaturated fats and contain many proteins and other compounds that enhance good health. Fisheries products can be sold as live, fresh, frozen, preserved, or processed. There are a variety of methods to preserve fishery products, such as fermenting (e.g., fish pastes), drying, smoking (e.g., smoked Salmon), salting, or pickling (e.g., pickled Herring) to name a few. Fish for human consumption can be sold in its entirety or in parts, like filets found in grocery stores. The vast majority of fishery products produced in the world are intended for human consumption. During 2008, 115 million t (253 billion lbs) of the world fish production was marketed and sold for human consumption. The remaining 27 million t (59 billion lbs) of fishery production from 2008 was utilized for non-food purposes. For example, 20.8 million t (45 billion lbs) was used for reduction purposes, creating fishmeal and fish oil to feed livestock or to be used as feed in aquaculture operations. The remainder was used for ornamental and cultural purposes as well as live bait and pharmaceutical uses. Similar to the advancement of fishing gear and navigation technology (See Fishing Gear), there have been many advances in the seafood-processing sector over the years. Prior to these developments, most seafood was only available in areas close to coastal towns. The modern canning process originated in France in the early 1800s. Cold storage and freezing plants, to store excess harvests of seafood, were created as early as 1892.

    Shrimp Five species of pandalid shrimp of various commercial and subsistence values are found in the cool waters off the coast of Alaska. Pink shrimp (Pandalus borealis) are the foundation of the commercial trawl shrimp fishery in Alaska. Pinks are circumpolar in distribution, though greatest concentrations occur in the Gulf of Alaska. Ranging from Puget Sound to the Arctic coast of Alaska, the humpy shrimp (P. goniurus) is usually harvested incidentally to pink shrimp. In some cases, however, the humpy constitutes the primary species caught. Both pink and humpy shrimp are usually marketed as cocktail or salad shrimp. Known for its sweet flavor, the sidestripe shrimp (Pandalopsis dispar) is also caught incidentally to pinks; however, there are small trawl fisheries in Prince William Sound and Southeast Alaska which target on this deeper water species. The coonstripe shrimp (Pandalus hypsinotis) is the prized target of various pot shrimp fisheries around the state. Coonstripe shrimp can be found from the Bering Sea to the Strait of Juan de Fuca while sidestripes range from the Bering Sea to Oregon. Spot shrimp (P. platyceros) is the largest shrimp in the North Pacific. Ranging from Unalaska Island to San Diego, this species is highly valued by commercial pot fishers and subsistence users alike. Most of the catch from the sidestripe, coonstripe, and spot fisheries is sold fresh in both local and foreign markets. General description: Pandalid shrimp can be characterized by a long, well-developed spiny rostrum and are medium to large in size. The body is generally slender and there are five pairs of "swimmerets" located on the underside of the abdomen.

Environmental conflicts and a limited freshwater supply constrain further developments in agriculture; global fisheries have levelled off, and aquaculture may have to play a more prominent role in supplying human food. Freshwater is important, but it is also a major challenge to cultivate the oceans in an environmentally, economically and energy- friendly way. To support this, a long-term vision must be to derive new sources of feed, primarily taken from outside the human food chain, and to move carnivore production to a lower trophic level. The main aim of this paper is to speculate on how feed supplies can be produced for an expanding aquaculture industry by and beyond 2050 and to establish a roadmap of the actions needed to achieve this. Resources from agriculture, fish meal and fish oil are the major components of pellet fish feeds. All cultured animals take advantage of a certain fraction of fish meal in the feed, and marine carnivores depend on a supply of marine lipids containing highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA, with ≥3 double bonds and ≥20 carbon chain length) in the feed. The availability of HUFA is likely the main constraint for developing carnivore aquaculture in the next decades.

    Spiny Lobster and Prawn (Shrimp) Regulations, 1973 Article 1. - These regulations may be cited as the Spiny Lobster and Prawn (Shrimp) Regulations, 1973. Article 2. - No person shall fish for, take, or land from any vessel any spiny lobster the carapace length of which is less than eight centimetres (3.15 inches) or the tail length of which is less than eleven and one half centimetres (4.50 inches). Article 3. - No person shall purchase or have in his possession any spiny lobster the carapace length of which is less than eight centimetres (3.15 inches) or the tail length of which is less than eleven and one half centimetres (4...50 inches). Article 4. - (1) No person shall fish for, or take any spiny lobster that is in the soft-shell stage. (2) No person shall sell, purchase or have in his possession any spiny lobster which is in the soft-shell stage. Article 5. - No person shall land from any vessel or sell or have in his possession any spiny lobster tail which: (a) is in such a condition that it cannot be measured; or (b) has the calcified bar of the tergum of the first abdominal segment fractured. Article 6. - (1) Every person who takes any spiny lobster that is carrying external eggs shall immediately return it alive with as little injury as possi~le into the water from which it was taken (2) No person shall remove the external eggs from any female lobster or from any spiny lobster tail. (3) No person shall buy, sell or expose for sale, or have in his possession any female spiny lobster or any spiny lobster tail from which any of the erteYnal eggs have been removed.
