Seafood Trade Relief Program Frequently Asked Questions Last Updated: September 18, 2020 Eligibility Q: Who is eligible to participate in the Seafood Trade Relief Program (STRP)? A: U.S. commercial fishermen who have a valid federal or state license or permit to catch seafood who bring their catch to shore and sell or transfer them to another party. That other party must be a legally permitted or licensed seafood dealer. Alternatively, the catch can be processed at sea and sold by the same legally permitted entity that harvested or processed the product. Q: I don’t participate in any USDA programs. Can I apply for STRP? A: Yes. Prior participation in USDA programs is not a prerequisite. Q: Is there an Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) limit to participate in STRP? A: Yes. To participate, a person or legal entity’s AGI cannot exceed $900,000 (using the average for the 2016, 2017, and 2018 tax years). However, the AGI limit does not apply if 75 percent or more of an eligible person’s or legal entity’s AGI comes from seafood production, farming, ranching, forestry, or related activities. Q: As a tribal fisherman, the treaty does not require me to submit annual income tax returns for fishing. Will this affect my ability to apply to STRP? A: No, that does not affect the application process. Tribal fishermen should submit their applications to FSA. Guidance on documentation by tribal members to certify compliance of meeting the adjusted gross income limit of $900K is forthcoming. Eligible Seafood Q: What seafood is eligible? A: Eligible seafood species must have been subject to retaliatory tariffs and suffered more than $5 million in retaliatory trade damages. -

The development of fish scraps shredding and mixing machine can be of great help to the production of fish emulsion fertilizer in both quality and quantity. The study specifically covered the design, development and performance evaluation of the fish scraps shredding and mixing machine that was employed for fish emulsion fertilizer production. Preliminary tests were performed to establish operating conditions of the machine such as working capacity, shredding speed, mixing speed, mixing time and mixing capacity. The working capacity was found to be 750g of fish scraps. The shredding speed established was based on the variable frequency drive (VFD) at 50Hz which corresponds to 1800rpm. The actual performance of the machine was evaluated by determining the shredding rate and efficiency. Based from the results gathered from the performance evaluation of the machine, the shredding efficiency rate and efficiency was 164.19 g/s and 91.64%, respectively. -

This study evaluated if the culture of complementary ecological- function species can recover nutrients dispersed into the water and transform them into high-valued biomass. A completely randomized experiment was designed with three treatments and four replications of each production system: monoculture of lambari (Astyanax lacustris); integrated aquaculture of lambari and Amazon river prawn (Macrobrachium amazonicum); and integrated aquaculture of lambari, Amazon river prawn, and curimbatá (Prochilodus lineatus). Fingerlings of lambari (0.8 ± 0.8 g) were stocked in twelve earthen- ponds (0.015 ha) at the density of 50 fish m-2. Eight ponds, were stocked with juveniles of Amazon river prawn (1.1 ± 0.2 g) at the density of 25 prawn m−2. Four of these eight ponds were stocked with curimbatá fingerlings (0.2 ± 0.1 g) at a density of 13 fish m-². Only lambari was fed twice a day with an extruded commercial diet. -

Bestor Department of Anthropology and East Asian Institute Columbia University Introduction As an anthropologist specializing in Japanese studies, I am often struck by the uncharacteristic willingness of economists to consider cultural and social factors in their analyses of Japan. Probably the economic system of no society is subject to as much scrutiny, analysis, and sheer speculation regarding its 'special character' as is Japan's. Put another way, emphasis on the special qualities of the Japanese economy suggests a recognition -- implicit or explicit -- that cultural values and social patterns condition economic systems. It remains an open question whether this recognition reflects empirical reality (e.g., perhaps the Japanese economic system is less autonomous than those in other societies) or is an artifact of interpretative conventions (e.g., perhaps both Western and Japanese observers are willing -- if at times antagonistic - partners in ascribing radical 'otherness' to the Japanese economy and therefore are more likely to accord explanatory power to factors that might otherwise be considered exogenous.) Recognition, however, that Japanese economic behavior and institutions are intertwined with and embedded within systems of cultural values and social structural relationships does not imply unanimity of opinion about the significance of this fact.
