For those interested in culture, there is a wide range of new museum exhibits, in- May 2019 Volume 7 Issue 8 cluding one featuring the Japanese-Swiss artist Leiko Ikemura and an exhibit that examines design in comics and cartoons. Another exhibit TABLE OF CONTENTS called “Swim City,” which is sure to touch the heart of all Basel residents, explores the 21st-century Swiss invention of river swimming as a mass movement. Workshops, Tours, and Education 20–22 Sporty types can chose between a wide range of running events this month, including a run just for women (Frauenlauf), a run that covers Inside Basel: Basel’s Swans 23 ground in three countries (Dreiländerlauf), a team relay race for a total distance of 80 km (SOLA), a combined swimming/running race (Aquathlon), and even a running event that lasts an insane 12 or 24 hours! If running Entertainment: Night on the Town 24–34 is not your speed, there are also in-line skating events, biking tours, and outdoor exercise classes, or you can simply enjoy a lazy day at one of the region’s outdoor swimming pools that open this month. Mark Your Calendar: June 2019 34 As always, Basel offers a great lineup of entertainment events this month, including the fabulous concerts of the Jazzfestival Basel, Mumford Ticket Office: Get Your Tickets Now! back page & Sons, and Supertramp’s Roger Hodgson, as well as musicals, theater, opera, ballet, comedy, and a huge selection of dance parties. You can also discover new wines at a variety of wine tastings at local boutiques, at the Swiss Wine Days at the Markthalle, and at the Mondovino wine fair at Messeplatz. Or you can make a day trip out of it and help our neigh- bors celebrate the 2018 vintage at wine fairs in Freiburg (Germany) and Guebwiller (Alsace), as well as at the open days at wine cellars in the German-speaking region of Switzerland. Other special events this month include a unique Saturday-morning brunch in the quaint old-town area of the Spalenberg, where you can discover distinctive wares while enjoying some delicious bites; an English- language introduction to the diverse offers of Basel’s education system; and the Body World exhibit in Freiburg, Germany, that will give you a new perspective on the human body. And before you head out to the Rhein to enjoy the warmer weather, turn to the “Inside Basel” special to learn about our majestic mute swans. It is one of the most important circus festivals worldwide and the largest in Switzerland. YOUNG STAGE stands for a new, innovative, contemporary circus, which is becoming more and more popular in Switzerland. It is well known for its world-class perfor- mances, for a contemporary show that rocks, for its hospitality, and for the professional organization. For this 11th edition, more than 600 artists from 61 nations applied to participate, from which 14 acts with 25 artists from 10 countries (including 3 from Switzerland) were invited after a rigorous selection process. They will proudly present a variety of acts, including aerial hoop, aerial straps, ball juggling / object manipulation, club juggling, diabolo, duo trapeze, duo vertical rope, flying pole, German wheel trio, handstand / pole, hand-to-hand, magic / card manipulation, Russian cradle, and tricking. The young artists perform their acts in each of the six shows: the premiere on Friday night, a show on Saturday night, a matinée and a late-afternoon show on Sunday, a show on Monday evening, and the final show on Tuesday evening that ends with the presentation of the awards and prizes (mone- lifetime experience on the flying-trapeze, and several companies from tary prizes as well as engagements in well-known circuses and variety- Switzerland and abroad will show a variety of creative, new circus acts at and TV-shows).
