We’re here for the entire community and we strive to make a positive difference every day. WXXI continues to be the lead station in the Innovation Trail project, a collaborative effort among six public media stations to report on the challenges and opportunities facing Upstate New York. Recently, we produced and presented a television documentary, A Walk Through History in Mt. Hope Cemetery, telling the story of this famous Rochester landmark (which also happens to be the final resting place of both Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass). Right now, we’re covering the remarkable story of artist Albert Paley’s latest project, the creation and installation of 13 significant metal sculptures on Park Avenue in New York City. And the list goes on and on. We recently launched the Little Theatre “Screen Saver Campaign,” to raise the funds necessary to bring The Little into the digital world. Work starts in June, and I hope you’ll support our effort to restore this Rochester gem for generations to come. June also brings us the Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival. I hope to see you at The Little catching a show in Theatre 1 as a Club Pass Venue, or at The Freed Maxick Jazz Tent in The Little parking lot where you can enjoy a quick bite to eat and free live music every night. We’ll also be producing five hours of programming from this year’s Jazz Festival for PBS stations throughout the country, letting people everywhere know that Rochester is a place for the best in arts, culture and music. Many thanks to the Wolk Foundation for their long time support of our Jazz Festival productions. I hope you share our pride in the good work done by the talented staff of WXXI and the Little Theatre. • EDUCATION GUIDE History and Improvisation: Making American Music “We Play the Same Songs but the Solos Are Different Every Night
EDUCATION GUIDE History and Improvisation: Making American Music “We play the same songs but the solos are different every night. The form is the same, but the improvisations are what is really what makes that music what it is…Jazz is about being creative, all the time.” – Scotty Barnhart LESSON OVERVIEW In this lesson, students will view the MUSIC episode from the PBS series Craft in America. The episode features the skilled craftwork required to make ukuleles, trumpets, banjos, guitars, and timpani mallets. Students will hear musicians playing each of the instruments. Students will also hear the musicians talk about their personal connection to their instruments. Additionally, the program illustrates how a study of American music is a study of American history. After viewing the episode, students will investigate connections between musicians and their instruments and between American music and American history. The studio portion of the lesson is designed around the idea of creating a maker space in which students experiment with and invent prototype instruments. Instructions are also included for a basic banjo made from a sturdy cardboard box. Note: While this lesson can take place completely within the art department, it is an ideal opportunity to work with music teachers, history teachers, technical education teachers, and physics teachers (for a related study of acoustics.) Grade Level: 9-12 Estimated Time: Six to eight 45-minute class periods of discussion, research, design Craft In America Theme/Episode: MUSIC Background Information MUSIC focuses on finely crafted handmade instruments and the world-renowned artists who play them, demonstrating the perfect blend of form and function.

HISTORY & GEOGRAPHY > Hawaii, Japan ARTS > Music, musical instruments EXPANDING THE CONCEPT OF LITERACY What is a “text”? We invite you to consider the performances on McCallum’s Field Trip Series as non-print texts available for study and investigation by your students. Anyone who has shown a filmed version of a play in their classroom, used a website as companion to a textbook, or asked students to do online research already knows that “texts” don’t begin and end with textbooks, novels, and reading packets. They extend to videos, websites, games, plays, concerts, dances, radio programs, and a number of other non-print texts that students and teachers engage with on a regular basis. We know that when we expand our definition of texts to the variety of media that we use in our everyday lives, we broaden the materials and concepts we have at our disposal in the classroom, increase student engagement, and enrich learning experiences. Please consider how utilizing your McCallum performance as a text might align to standards established for reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language. How do we help students to use these texts as a way of shaping ideas and understanding the world? Please use this material to help you on this journey.

  • Monstrous Aunties: the Rabelaisian Older Asian Woman in British Cinema and Television Comedy
Monstrous Aunties: The Rabelaisian older Asian woman in British cinema and television comedy Estella Tincknell, University of the West of England Introduction Representations of older women of South Asian heritage in British cinema and television are limited in number and frequently confined to non-prestigious genres such as soap opera. Too often, such depictions do little more than reiterate familiar stereotypes of the subordinate ‘Asian wife’ or stage the discursive tensions around female submission and male tyranny supposedly characteristic of subcontinent identities. Such marginalisation is compounded in the relative neglect of screen representations of Asian identities generally, and of female and older Asian experiences specifically, within the fields of Film and Media analysis. These representations have only recently begun to be explored in more nuanced ways that acknowledge the complexity of colonial and post-colonial discoursesi. The decoupling of the relationship between Asian and Indian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi heritage, together with the foregrounding of religious rather than national-colonial identities, has further rendered the topic more complex. Yet there is an exception to this tendency. In the 1990s, British comedy films and TV shows began to carve out a space in which transgressive representations of aging Asian women appeared. From the subversively mischievous Pushpa (Zohra Segal) in Gurinder Chadha’s debut feature, Bhaji on the Beach (1993), to the bickering ‘competitive mothers’ of the ground-breaking sketch show, Goodness, Gracious Me (BBC 1998 – 2001, 2015), together 1 with the sexually-fixated grandmother, Ummi (Meera Syal), in The Kumars at Number 42 (BBC, 2001-6; Sky, 2014), a range of comic older female figures have overturned conventional discourses.

  • Roger Hodgson Supertramp “Breakfast In...Milano!!!”
Comunicato stampa ROGER HODGSON SUPERTRAMP “BREAKFAST IN...MILANO!!!”
