HElEN oF TRoY tuesday, June 11 • 8pm

Historian Bettany Hughes (THE SPARTANS) travels across the eastern Mediterranean on an epic journey to find out the truth about Helen of Troy, known as “the face that launched a thousand ships.” Helen has been blamed for causing the Trojan War, a conflict that resulted in countless deaths. During her voyage in Helen’s wake, Hughes sorts the reality from the myths told about Helen. She travels from the city where it is said Helen was born — Sparta in the mountains of greece — to the archaeological site in modern Turkey that will be forever linked with the war Bettany hughes fought in Helen’s name: Troy.

AMERICAN MASTERS “gARRISoN KEIlloR: THE MAN oN THE RADIo IN THE RED SHoES” Friday, June 14 • 9pm

lake Wobegon - where the women are strong, the men are good looking and all the children are above average - has become America’s collective hometown, visited weekly for the past 40 years on a fictional radio program that creates bona fide nostalgia. With his “Prairie Home Companion,” Keillor became our national philosopher, filling the empty shoes of Will Rogers and Mark Twain, through his running commentary about the human condition and the social politic. Garrison Keillor TV 15 Highlights JoHN D. RoCKEFEllER: AMERICAN ExPERIENCE tuesday, June 18 • 8pm

For decades, the Rockefeller name was despised in America — associated with John D. Rockefeller Sr.’s feared monopoly, Standard Oil. The world’s first billionaire, Rockefeller held 90 percent of the world’s oil refineries, 90 percent of the marketing of oil and a third of all the oil wells. Working methodically and secretly, he transformed an industry — and changed forever the way America did business. Though Rockefeller’s only son dedicated his life to redeeming the family reputation, and Rockefeller had given away half his fortune by the end of his life, his philanthropy couldn’t erase the memory of his predatory business practices. John d. rockefeller

HENRY FoRD: AMERICAN ExPERIENCE tuesday, June 25 • 8pm

HENRY FoRD paints a fascinating portrait of a farm boy who rose from obscurity to become the most influential American innovator of the 20th century. Ford’s Model T automobile and his five-dollar-a-day wage ushered in the modern world, earning Ford reverence from millions of Americans. Yet many of the changes he wrought deeply troubled the carmaker. In frustration, he lashed out at enemies, real and imagined, blamed Jews for the country’s problems, bullied those who worked for him and exhibited great cruelty to his only son, often, it seemed, wishing to retreat to an idyllic fantasy of the past. henry Ford

NoVA “EARTH FRoM SPACE” Wednesdayday, June 26 • 9pm

This groundbreaking special reveals a spectacular new space-based vision of Earth. Produced in consultation with NASA scientists, “Earth From Space” takes data from earth-observing satellites and transforms them into dazzling visual sequences, each one exposing the intricate web of forces that sustain life on earth. See the astonishing beauty and complexity of our dynamic planet: how dust blown from the Sahara fertilizes the Amazon; how a vast submarine “waterfall” off Antarctica helps drive ocean currents around the world; and how the sun’s heating of the southern Atlantic gives birth to a colossally powerful hurricane.

ANNIE: IT’S THE HARD KNoCK lIFE, FRoM SCRIPT To STAgE Friday, June 28 • 9pm

The show-stopping musical Annie, its characters and its songs are timeless and classic. It’s been 35 years since the little orphan Annie first stepped onto a Broadway stage. For Annie’s return to Broadway, this documentary offers a memorable behind-the-scenes look at every step of a single Annie production number, from the earliest phases of discussion among the creative team, rehearsals with actors, to opening night on Broadway. Through the staging of the song “It’s the Hard Knock life,” viewers are introduced to the work of the actors who play the orphans and the professionals who shape and contribute to the final production of the song. DIE MEISTERSINGER • JuNE 22 AT 1PM • WHRO 90.3 FM The Wagner bicentennial continues this month with a performance of Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Wagner’s only comic opera. And unlike his other music dramas, this one is based on an actual historical person, the 16th century singer, teacher, poet and playwright Hans Sachs of Nürnberg. There is conflict, but no dragons or death in Die Meistersinger, and there is a love story which actually has a happy ending; all this set to a warm and romantic score by Richard Wagner. Enjoy this production of Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg from the lyric opera of Chicago, conducted by Sir Andrew Davis and Nürnberg featuring James Morris as Hans Sachs. The broadcast will be heard at 1pm on Saturday, June 22 on WHRo-FM, WHRF and WHRJ.

SuMMER SOLSTICE IN JuNE • WHRO 90.3 FM Summer begins at 1:04am on the 21st of this month. Autumn begins three months later. So when is Midsummer? For hundreds of years, it’s been observed closer to the summer solstice, the beginning of the season, in countries around the world. given that the celebrations of summer and Midsummer have been going on for so long, one can expect a considerable body of music associated with them. There’s Mendelssohn’s score for the Shakespeare play, Alfven’s Rhapsody, even “Night on Bald Mountain” for Midsummer, as well as the usual suspects for summer itself, with Vivaldi and glazunov leading the way. Enjoy all these works and others later this month as we welcome the summer solstice on WHRo-FM, WHRJ and WHRF.
